I adore the name [name_u]Basil[/name_u], but only pronounced the British way (baz-uhl). Sadly, living in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], I know it would mean a lifetime of mispronunciation (bay-sihl - ugh), so unless my circumstances change, I’ll have to let the name go.
With [name_u]Basil[/name_u] as inspiration, what other boy names come to mind?
If it helps, my top girl names are [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], and [name_u]Waverly[/name_u]
I live in the U.S and pronounce it Bah-zil like you! Then again I’m not from it so it can differ with a American born one! I love you’re botanical theme
A couple of names similar are:
Sage
Clove
Cedar
Rowen
Bay
Linden
Forest
River
Thyme
Valerian
Fennel
Herb
Russet
All herb related or nature related unisex boy names
I have nothing to add except commiserations about the [name_u]Basil[/name_u] pronunciation! Growing up in the UK, I had no idea of the American pronunciation until I heard it on the TV and it definitely threw me
Hope you find the name! I would second [name_u]Sorrel[/name_u], [name_m]Cecil[/name_m] and [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] from above for non-botanical options or [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]Russet[/name_u] for nature-themed.
Such a shame about [name_u]Basil[/name_u]! I don’t have much to add but I really like the suggestions of [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_u]Sorrel[/name_u], [name_u]Russet[/name_u], [name_u]Linden[/name_u] and [name_m]Barley[/name_m]. I hope you find something you like!
I’m pretty sure there’s a saint [name_u]Basil[/name_u] pronounced the way you want. I’m in the US but I pronounce it that way when it is a name. I think it’d be an easy correction.
I’m from the US, but have always heard the name pronounced as [name_m]Baz[/name_m]-uhl, not [name_u]Bay[/name_u]-zil, which is how I would normally pronounce the herb. Interesting!
What about [name_m]Felix[/name_m] - for some reason those always go together well in my mind. Or maybe [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]/Toby, [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], [name_m]Pascal[/name_m], or [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]?
