Basil?

Okay I’m a sucker for plant names and recently [name_u]Basil[/name_u] has caught my eye. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you berries think it’s too weird or something that could be really cute? Also what middles would you pair it with? Thanks!

Hi there.

I just love it. I’m American, but I still feel like the name should be pronounced Ba-zuhl w/a short ‘a’. And that’s likely how people would say it in the U.K. But if you’re in the U.S, most people will probably say it as [name_u]Bay[/name_u]-zuhl. Oh, & with Ba-zuhl you get the nn Bash, which is super fun.

A few mn ideas:

Basil [name_m]Adrian[/name_m]

Basil [name_m]Cillian[/name_m]

Basil [name_m]Frederic[/name_m]

Basil [name_m]Henry[/name_m]

Basil [name_m]Ivan[/name_m]

Basil [name_u]Julian[/name_u]

Basil [name_u]Oliver[/name_u]

Hope this helps.

I also adore it. Currently living in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] so probably won’t use it if we stay here, for fear of it being pronounced [name_u]Bay[/name_u]-zuhl, but if we were to move to the UK it’s my top boy choice!

Skip middles starting with J.

Love it!

Basil is one of the names I love hearing and seeing but not one I could use.

My hesitation is the pronunciation. I grew up with several ways to pronounce my name and i felt like I was always correcting people.

It’s a perfectly good name but the debate on bay-sil versus baz- ul would ultimately rule it out for me

I don’t think it’s too weird. I would use [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] as a middle name for [name_u]Basil[/name_u].

I really want to love [name_u]Basil[/name_u], but I do think it’s odd unfortunately. I’m American and to me the [name_m]Baz[/name_m]-ul pronunciation is just too Fawlty [name_m]Towers[/name_m], and the [name_u]Bay[/name_u]-sil pronunciation is so herby. I like it as a middle name!

I don’t know why, but I always have thought of it as a male dogs name or cats name

I’m really loving it at the moment! I’d expect it to have more love with Berries but it still seems to be quite an untouched name! I say ba-zuhl (ba as in bat). I’m preferring it a little more as a middle at the moment ([name_m]William[/name_m] [name_u]Basil[/name_u] is one of my faves) but I quite like…

Basil [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]George[/name_u]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Marcus[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]

NMs.

I knew a lovely orange tabby named [name_u]Basil[/name_u] growing up. I think it made me love the name more. He lived next door to my grandparents. I can still picture my Grandpa chatting to him when he would wander over for a visit.

Where I’m from the herb is [name_u]Bay[/name_u]-zul, when used as a name its Bah-zil.
Neither pronunciation is appealing to me though.
