Basil

I love this name! And this is my topic pick for a boy. My husband and I are literary fans and we’re considering using the alternate spelling Bazil. This is for 2 reasons.

  1. We live in the states where most people would assume we are talking of the herb and not the bah-zul pronunciation.

  2. Our Italian last name is way to close to Ziti.

We LOVE the name Basil/Bazil and don’t want to pick another. Hopefully we can find a good last name to balance it out?

Nice! I do think that it will get pronounced “Baze-ul” but I’m sure people will pronounce it correctly after you explain it to them! I’m [name_f]English[/name_f] so I would automatically say Bah-zil!

Y’all are so nice on this site. I was getting absolutely ROASTED in other forums. [name_m]Even[/name_m] with the more traditional spelling of [name_u]Basil[/name_u]. I will show these middle name suggestions to my husband when he comes home.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] is so charming. I live in the states & do think that you’ll get a lot of Bay-zuhl. I’m a name nerd, so I immediately think (and prefer) Ba-zuhl. I suppose [name_m]Bazil[/name_m] may be more straight forward, but I kind of think having to explain the pronunciation sometimes may be worth it to have the more original spelling.

Sorry for any repeats, but here are a few middle name ideas:

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] Adrian*

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] Benjamin*

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m]

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Cillian[/name_m]

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Frederic[/name_m]

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Henry[/name_u]

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] Julian*

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Jerome[/name_m]

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Luca[/name_u]

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Odin[/name_m]

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Peter[/name_m]

I starred my favorites. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

All names are welcome. And I love how [name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] sounds

I’d stick with the [name_u]Basil[/name_u] spelling. If you’re in the US, people would possibly assume [name_m]Bazil[/name_m] was just an alternative sp and still use the bay-zil pn. That could be corrected though:)

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Finnian[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Ezra[/name_u]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Lucian[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Oliver[/name_u]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Leonard[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Rory[/name_u]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Cormac[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Julian[/name_u]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]

It doesn’t matter where you are or how you spell it, any name has the potential of being mispronounced — even the most traditional of names has this problem. If pronunciation is the only reason you’re considering Bazil over Basil, I’d stick with Basil. If you correct someone a time or two, they will get it. If they don’t even attempt to say it the way you would like them to after that, they probably aren’t worth your while anyway.

Thank you all for your input. I think we’re gonna lean towards the original spelling. We’re not to worried having people mispronounce the name since a quick correction can fix that for future interactions. We’re still deciding on the middle name but some of our favorites are:

[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Brandon[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Abel[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]

For [name_m]Silas[/name_m], we can’t decide if it would be to weird to have two sets of sil next to each other. Perhaps it would be better with:
[name_m]Bazil[/name_m] [name_m]Silas[/name_m] Zi** of our name?

What a sweet choice. I personally prefer the [name_u]Basil[/name_u] spelling to [name_m]Bazil[/name_m], and for some reason feel more inclined to pronounce the former as “BAH-zil” and the latter as “BAY-zil” !? Anywho, both are nice enough, but the traditional spelling feels a lot warmer and has more of a charm to me!

I also live in the states, and I think people will inevitably pronounce either spelling as “BAY-zil” at some point. [name_m]Easy[/name_m] correction, of course, but it happens and it’s all right!

I think [name_u]Basil[/name_u] and [name_m]Silas[/name_m] are totally fine beside one another. It’s super cool to have the “s” and “z” sounds throughout his name, including one “s” pronounced as “z” ! I think that’s just great.

Thank you for your input. I think we are gonna go with the original spelling even though I know my husband really wants to justify it with a z. He’s a bit chaotic like that XD.

We’re also really leaning toward [name_m]Silas[/name_m] as the middle name since some of or nephews (for which we have many) have some of the other favorite middle names as first names. This way if he wants to go by the middle name he’s not fighting with his older cousins.

So [name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m] Zi** is our biggest contender so far.
