Battle of the Vintage Vs: Vivian or Violet

[name]Vivian[/name] or [name]Violet[/name] and why?

I love both, but I have to go with [name]Vivian[/name]. [name]Violet[/name] is a bit overexposed right now–I know one [name]Vivian[/name] and four Violets under the age of 5. [name]Vivian[/name] is less expected and has more edge.

[name]Vivian[/name]! I hear [name]Violet[/name] so much more, and I honestly think [name]Vivian[/name] is prettier and a bit more lively.

[name]Vivian[/name] because its an adorable name for a child but also mature enough to be a good name for her when she’s an adult. It’s also more accomadating for nicknames.

They are both but I think violet is prettier and has nice associations. It is more popular so if that’s a factor than maybe [name]Vivian[/name] would be better. I just think violet has so much more character than [name]Vivian[/name] does and is a very pretty and delicate name. [name]Hope[/name] it doesn’t become top 10 anytime soon but it probably will. Lol

I love them both! [name]Violet[/name] is perhaps the more conventionally beautiful, which is why it is skyrocketing in part. [name]Vivian[/name] is lovely though and I really adore the nickname [name]Viv[/name] or [name]Vivi[/name], and the association with vivid. I don’t know any Violets of any age. I know two middle-aged / older Vivians, who are both just fantastic people, so I have positive associations with the name. I think it’s all in what you’re looking for more specifically.

I like [name]Vivian[/name] much more than [name]Violet[/name]. [name]Vivian[/name] has a softer, more feminine sound to me with the cute nickname [name]Vivi[/name] for a kid and [name]Vivian[/name] is mature for an adult.

This is hard! I love [name]Vivian[/name], but I slightly prefer the [name]Vivienne[/name] spelling. [name]Violet[/name] seems to be getting very popular though as well. I think at the end of the day I would choose [name]Vivian[/name]

To me, these names are so different. [name]Vivian[/name] is sophisticated and strong. [name]Violet[/name] is soft, feminine and delicate. [name]Both[/name] are very pretty names. I like [name]Vivian[/name] slightly more…but it’s a whole other vintage v name that I really, truly love- [name]Vera[/name].

[name]Vivian[/name], hands down. [name]Violet[/name] sounds like “violent” to me, and I just don’t find it pretty. It’s a name I just don’t understand- it sounds very ugly to my ears. I really just don’t see the appeal at all.

[name]Violet[/name]!

[name]Vivian[/name] just feels too harsh and, especially with this spelling, feels a bit old-fashioned still. [name]Violet[/name] is all sweetness and charm. I guess it helps that [name]Violet[/name] is one of my personal favorites and purple is my favorite color.

Good luck!

[name]Vivian[/name], but I prefer [name]Vivienne[/name]. I think it’s a beautiful name, and I love the nn “[name]Vivi[/name],” (thank you, [name]Divine[/name] Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood!)

[name]Violet[/name] is a very harsh combination of sounds for me, and the word is so incongruous with the flower it represents!

[name]Vivian[/name] for me (though I prefer [name]Vivienne[/name]). I love the nn “[name]Viva[/name]!”

On someone else’s daughter, I say [name]Vivian[/name] (though I prefer [name]Vivien[/name]). It’s got vintage charm, old Hollywood glamor (think [name]Vivien[/name] [name]Leigh[/name]), and it’s underused. There’s very little chance that [name]Vivian[/name] will ever have to go by her last initial.
On my future daughter, however, I say [name]Violet[/name]. [name]Even[/name] though it’s popular, it isn’t as overused as [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Olivia[/name] or [name]Isabella[/name] are. Plus, I tend to prefer [name]Vivian[/name] (or, rather, [name]Vivien[/name]) as a MN.

I like [name]Vivian[/name].
Have you considered [name]Vivienne[/name]?

[name]Vivian[/name] sometimes reminds me of a little snobby and sophisticated name. [name]Violet[/name] is spunky and artsy.

It’s hard for me to chose which one I like more because they are both so great but I think [name]Violet[/name] wins by just a hair.

[name]Vivian[/name] hands down, although I prefer it spelt [name]Vivienne[/name]. It’s classy and beautiful and wears better on child-adult.
While I am growing to dislike [name]Violet[/name] less, it is very overexposed right now and just nothing special imo.

[name]Vivian[/name] would be my choice for a first name.

This. Exactly. Except I also agree whith the poster who said that they prefer the [name]Vivienne[/name] spelling.

According to the Social Security baby name site, [name]Vivian[/name] and [name]Violet[/name] are pretty much the same in terms of popularity and both are on the rise.

I am partial to [name]Vivian[/name] because it’s my 6 year old daughter’s name! I prefer the [name]Vivian[/name] spelling. To me “[name]Vivienne[/name]” looks a little French dance hall. I think the simpler [name]Vivian[/name] is more sophisticated.

That said, I also [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Violet[/name]. I would love to name my second daughter [name]Violet[/name], but I don’t want two “V” names.
