Baudelaire

Not planning on using it myself, just curious what others think about this as a first name for a boy. I rather like it. It’s going on my GP list, or my character list. [name_m]Both[/name_m], I guess. I’d never considered it as a first name until I was thinking of [name_m]Beau[/name_m] names. I don’t feel strongly about [name_m]Charles[/name_m] Baudelaire in any way, but for someone who does, it might be a great first or middle name option. Anyone ever meet a Baudelaire? Is it on any of your lists?

I think anyone who would use Baudelaire would have strong feelings about the poet, since that’s the screamingly obvious association. His poetry was a bit macabre and lugubrious (which is why Lemony Snicket borrowed the name) so I would expect any boy burdened with the name to need a really ironclad backstory as to why his mom picked it.

[name_m]Even[/name_m] judging just on sounds alone, I don’t think it makes the world’s prettiest name. I think something like Beaumont would be a lot better.

I immediately thought of A Series of Unfortunate Events. The books are pretty popular, so I wouldn’t recommend the name.

I think it has a pretty sound. I am not so much familiar with the poet, so I have no strong opinions there, but it does seem extremely [name_m]French[/name_m] surnamey, and the -laire ending seems very reminiscent of [name_f]Claire[/name_f], and it almost feels light and airy and girly to me. As girly as a [name_m]French[/name_m] surname can be, but the [name_m]French[/name_m] language is considered pretty, for the most part, so I think it’d take a really great [name_m]French[/name_m] surname to work really well on a guy. I do love [name_m]Beau[/name_m], though, and it’d be interesting to come across in a story.

As soon as I saw the title to the thread I thought of the books.

I kind of adore Baudelaire, and think the nickname [name_u]Bo[/name_u] makes it more usable. I thought of the poet first, and then Lemony Snicket.

Honestly I think it’s an awesome name for a pet.
If I met someone with a dog named Baudelaire I’d salute them.
It feels like way too much for a person as a first name.
Maybe as a middle…maybe.

Oh interesting, I didn’t know it had been used in the Lemony Snicket books. I saw the movie but don’t remember much about it, and haven’t ever read the books. [name_m]Just[/name_m] did some google-fu and found there was also a nice little write up about Baudelaire on Bewitching Baby Names.

It does feel light and airy, but I tend to like that sort of name for men. Like I said, this isn’t for my future kidlets, just a name I was fantasizing about. I wish I was a huge fan of [name_m]Charles[/name_m] Baudelaire because I’d probably be horrible and name my son after him. I really do love the sound of Baudelaire.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the idea of a dog named Baudelaire!

closing old threads I forgot about
