Bear for Robert?

What are your thoughts on using [name_m]Bear[/name_m] as a nn for [name_m]Robert[/name_m]? Both my fiancé’s and my (late) father are [name_m]Robert[/name_m] and they go by [name_m]Rob[/name_m]/Robert and [name_m]Bob[/name_m]. I suggested [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] because my dad hadn’t gone my that in decades and it’s different enough from [name_m]Rob[/name_m] that it wouldn’t be confused for his living grandfather, but DF doesn’t like it. Does [name_m]Bear[/name_m] work as a nickname? I was taking it from the french pronunciation but that feels like a bit of a stretch. Suggestions appreciated!

Bear absolutely works! Nicknames don’t always have to exactly match the name they come from. There’s also [name_u]Bert[/name_u]/Bertie, or you could just choose a nickname unrelated to the name.

[name_m]Bear[/name_m] could work theoretically.
Other suggestions
[name_u]Bertie[/name_u]
[name_f]Ro[/name_f]/Rowe
Ret/Rhett
[name_m]Obie[/name_m]
These are mostly stretches but if you introduce him as [name_m]Bear[/name_m] (or a different nickname) it should be fine.

I think it works. [name_m]Bear[/name_m] is very sweet.

Definitely works!

I wanted to add that when you say it in French, the last syllable sounds like Bear, so there’s that too

Yea, I think it totally works as long as you guys love and use it!

I also think [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] or [name_u]Bert[/name_u] deserve a come back as a nickname.

Bear is my favorite nickname for [name_m]Robert[/name_m]/Roberto!! I think it’s so sweet and handsome, and fits perfectly in with other currently popular names. It also freshens up [name_m]Robert[/name_m] a bit!

Yeah, that works! I know plenty of [name_m]Roberts[/name_m], and they go by assorted things and all sound good. The one thing with [name_m]Bear[/name_m] is that he would eventually outgrow it, so just make sure that you like some others enough.

It definitely works!

I think if you want to use it as a nickname then use it as a nickname. A nickname doesn’t HAVE to be related to the name.

Bear works really well!

I like it. It works well.

When we were younger, my brother often was called Ro-bꬴar at family gatherings based off the French pronunciation of Robꬴr† by my mom’s side, which fit in well with the French last name they held.

I think it works, in that many nicknames don’t really have anything to do with the real name.

It’s genius! I love [name_m]Bear[/name_m] as a nickname, and [name_m]Robert[/name_m] is a great not too common classic.

I think [name_m]Bear[/name_m] works, though it’s a stretch. What about [name_f]Ro[/name_f] or [name_u]Bo[/name_u]?

I think it works, often with name sake names there is a chosen [name_u]Nick[/name_u] name that’s just their name. Like a The Fourth could be called a name meaning 4th of a third could be called [name_m]Tripp[/name_m]. Something different but connected that does work well for some reason but that isn’t the name on their birth certificates and may require some explanation… Is totally ok. [name_m]Even[/name_m] Jrs often go by like AJ for [name_m]Adam[/name_m] Juniour or go by their middle name. If [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] is ok for [name_m]Robert[/name_m] because it’s been ‘accepted’ then [name_m]Bear[/name_m] which actually makes sense to me can be. [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] can also be a nice nn for [name_m]Robert[/name_m] but I don’t feel like you see boys with that nn much anymore, personally I would go with [name_m]Bear[/name_m].
