Did [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] really just name her son [name_m]Bear[/name_m]? I’m not fond of word names so for me, this is a nickname/quirky middle not an actual first name.
However, I do think it is cool that we have one high profile example of a child taking on the mothers maiden name. Apparently, [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is one of 4 siblings, 3 girls and 1 boy. Her brother doesn’t have any plans to have children anytime soon, so she wanted to ensure that the family name was carried on, hence giving her son her last name. I think this is great, but his first name is a bit out there for me… Also all her children have different last names (as they have different fathers) so should she have another child, it would be no issue that child to carry the fathers last name.
I was shocked when I found out that she names her son Bear. Her other kids have cute names (Mia & Joe)so I was expected something like that (classic in the first, unexpected in the middle) . And apparently she confirmed that she names him Bear.
As for the last name, her husband last name is Rocknroll so I think she didnt want to name her son Bear Rocknroll (Which i’am sure he would havr gone change it when he was 18 lol)
I’m not fond of [name_m]Bear[/name_m], but it’s NOTHING compared to so many other messed up celebrity baby names. I’m more than relieved that [name_f]Kate[/name_f] gave her son her own surname (and what a great surname that is, I have always loved [name_f]Winslet[/name_f]). It would be bordering to child abuse to give your child the surname Rocknroll.
Oh [name_f]Kate[/name_f], dear [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. Why? Such a sexy slithery surname you have, so to squander it on [name_m]Bear[/name_m]… boo.
[name_m]Orson[/name_m]! [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]!
@bellerose@shvibziks Ahhh… that makes sense. I never thought about her husbands last name being Rocknroll as the article I read also included his birth name of [name_m]Ned[/name_m] [name_m]Abel[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]. I just thought it was a stage name and wasn’t aware that he legally changed his name (at the time of reading the news). So I just assumed that the other alternative was using the fathers birth last name of [name_m]Smith[/name_m]. [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] is much better than Rocknroll and I couldn’t imagine them using that last name or even thinking of naming the child [name_m]Bear[/name_m] Rocknroll (shivers).
I’ll admit though, I do like [name_m]Bear[/name_m] as a quirky nickname but I would never in a million years have expected her to use it as a given name. It just doesn’t fit her image for me.
I can only imagine that one day, little [name_m]Bear[/name_m] will grow up envying his siblings for having normal names such as [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and [name_m]Joe[/name_m] (top names in the UK when they were born), meanwhile, he has the potential to be mocked and ridiculed over his name. [name_m]Bear[/name_m]. Why on earth would you choose [name_m]Bear[/name_m]?! As a nickname, it’s fine, and completely understandable, but as a legally registered first name?!
I agree. Dad’s middle name is (according to a previous poster) [name_m]Abel[/name_m], and [name_m]Abel[/name_m] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] would have been a much better choice if she were going to copy another celebrity baby name.
The image I can’t erase from my mind that is associated with the name [name_m]Bear[/name_m] is [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] Silverstone pre-chewing her toddler’s food. Blechhh. Still, I’m predicting that [name_m]Bear[/name_m] will become more common.
[name_m]Abel[/name_m] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] would have been wonderful. Or [name_m]Abel[/name_m] [name_m]Bear[/name_m] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] if they had to.
Sometimes I wish there was a such profession as “personal name adviser to celebrities”.
Actually the father’s original surname is “[name_m]Abel[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]” (an old aristocratic family who is even related to the Royals by marriage). He probably had a strong reason to get rid of the name, so it makes sense he wouldn’t pass it on to his kid.
[name_m]Bear[/name_m] isn’t horrible. Sure, I’d rather see [name_m]Edward[/name_m] or [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] on the birth certificate, but I wouldn’t like to be called [name_m]Joe[/name_m] [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] or [name_f]Mia[/name_f] [name_f]Honey[/name_f], either. I doubt [name_f]Kate[/name_f] intends her kids to become judges or Prime Ministers.
I don’t really know what they were thinking with [name_m]Bear[/name_m], but kudos to [name_f]Kate[/name_f] for giving him her last name. That won my approval.
They’re rich enough not to need to care what other people think.
If you’re really rich or really poor you can name your kid [name_m]Bear[/name_m] or Sparkle and it will be fine. Well not fine but you can certainly get a career in journalism like [name_f]Peaches[/name_f] Geldof.
[name_m]Aren[/name_m]'t there professional naming consultants these days?? For some reason I am thinking this is already a thing. What a fun job that would be, too.
If I were a wealthy celeb, the first kind of help I would hire would be a professional chef ([name_f]Oprah[/name_f] has one, right?). After that, I’d look into hiring a name consultant for naming our next child—[name_f]Pam[/name_f] Satran and [name_f]Linda[/name_f] Rosenkrantz are at the top of my list (if either does consulting).
[name_m]Bear[/name_m]… oh my, I use that as a quirky nickname for my daughter! Along with Bug, [name_u]Boo[/name_u], and a number of others that I would never in a million years put on a birth certificate.
It makes absolutely no sense with the sibset. [name_m]Bear[/name_m] belongs with [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]'s kids (actually part of one of his kid’s names). [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_m]Joe[/name_m], and [name_m]BEAR[/name_m]? Huh?!?!
[name_m]Bear[/name_m] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] will never have to struggle to “make it” in the world. I’m sure he’ll live quite comfortably for the rest of his life, and will never have to worry about his name holding him back in life.
I really hope this doesn’t start a trend of little Bears running around. It’s a cute nickname for a [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], or [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], or really just any cute little kid. As a real name, heck no. It sounds like a generic nickname for a rambunctious toddler.
