Beatrix or Eve?

We are trying to name our first daughter, and have almost narrowed it down to [name]Beatrix[/name] (nn [name]Bea[/name]) and [name]Eve[/name] (nn [name]Evie[/name]). We would also consider [name]Evelyn[/name] (nn [name]Evie[/name]). We will most likely use one of these names for first and the other for middle. Other names we like are [name]Milly[/name], [name]Zooey[/name], [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Willa[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Isla[/name], [name]Lily[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name]. Any thoughts?

i absolutely adore the name [name]Beatrix[/name] its so playful and elegant at the same time
i do like [name]Eve[/name] but i feel like it stops so abruptly, i like the nn [name]Evie[/name] much better…[name]Evelyn[/name] is pretty also
[name]Milly[/name]- its a sweet name i think of a little british girl but i also think of milli vanilli sorry
[name]Zooey[/name]- i prefer [name]Zoe[/name]
[name]Pearl[/name] - i adore adore adore this name! so sparkly and sweet with a little vintage charm
[name]Willa[/name]- i dont really like this name sorry i do like [name]Willow[/name] though
[name]Lucy[/name] - i love this name. simple and sweet
[name]Isla[/name] - pretty
[name]Lily[/name] - too common but if u luv it use it
[name]Eleanor[/name] - this name is very lovely

my favs are:
[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]

[name]Hi[/name]! I absolutely love [name]Beatrix[/name] (it’s one of my all-time favorites), and think that [name]Eve[/name] is wonderful, too. You said you’ll be using one for the first name and one for the middle, and I personally like [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Eve[/name] better than [name]Eve[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name], because with [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Eve[/name], the “trix” syllable breaks up the long E sounds in [name]Bea[/name] and [name]Eve[/name], while [name]Eve[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] has back-to-back long E sounds ([name]Eve[/name]/[name]Bea[/name]).

You may also like [name]Genevieve[/name], nn [name]Evie[/name].

[name]Milly[/name]: I think it’s adorable, but I guess I think of it as a nickname for [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Camille[/name], [name]Camilla[/name], or [name]Millicent[/name].

[name]Zooey[/name]: With [name]Zoe[/name] and [name]Zoey[/name] out there, [name]Zooey[/name] feels a lot trendier to me than your other names. (I have to admit that I can’t help but see the word “zoo” in the name, which isn’t necessarily a good thing to me. At the same time, I appreciate the literary connection.)

[name]Pearl[/name]: I love it! From your list of first names, I love [name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Pearl[/name], and [name]Willa[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]. (Then again, [name]Willa[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] sounds like “[name]Will[/name] a pearl” to me, as though someone is leaving someone a pearl in a will.) [name]Even[/name] though [name]Beatrix[/name] with a P middle reminds me of [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name] (not a bad association), I do love [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Pearl[/name], too.

[name]Willa[/name]: I totally love [name]Willa[/name]!

[name]Lucy[/name]: I think it’s wonderful! I love [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name].

[name]Isla[/name]: I love [name]Isla[/name], too…

[name]Lily[/name]: I think it’s very pretty, but I love [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Eve[/name], [name]Willa[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], and [name]Pearl[/name] more.

[name]Eleanor[/name]: Oh, I love [name]Eleanor[/name]!

I really, really, love so many of the names on your list! My favorite is [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]!

I hope you choose the name you love the most!

Take care!

[name]Hi[/name]!

[name]Beatrix[/name] - I love [name]Beatrix[/name] and the nickname [name]Bea[/name]! To me, [name]Beatrix[/name] is so whimsical and fun, yet still elegant and vintage. It reminds me of [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name], who is amazing. I think [name]Beatrix[/name] has an edge over [name]Beatrice[/name] simply because of the added sense of playfulness the name has, yet the strong X sound gives the name substance and sophistication. My favorite!

[name]Eve[/name] - It seems odd to me that your two favorites are [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Eve[/name], as they seem very different in both style and image to me. While I know [name]Eve[/name] is a classic in the sense of the Biblical [name]Eve[/name], it feels like a much more modern name. This name has a distinctly feminine, elegant, sophisticated sound, yet, for me, it lacks much of the playful whimsy that [name]Beatrix[/name] has. I also feel that the nickname [name]Evie[/name] is slightly more [name]Beatrix[/name]-like than [name]Eve[/name]-like. I do like the name [name]Eve[/name], but not as much as its longer forms ([name]Eva[/name], [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Evangelia[/name]), and certainly not as much as [name]Beatrix[/name]!

[name]Evelyn[/name] - This was the name of my childhood doctor, who went by [name]Evie[/name], too. I always think of her when I see the name! [name]Evelyn[/name] sounds much more classic and elegant, adult and sophisticated to me, but not in the glamorous way that [name]Eve[/name] does. Whereas [name]Eve[/name] has her name in lights, shining before a crowd, [name]Evelyn[/name] seems more likely to have her name scribbled in the pages of a tired novel rescued from the depths of the library. It is a pretty name, but it doesn’t sparkle for me, personally.

[name]Milly[/name] - This feels entirely incomplete to me, more like a nickname (for [name]Millicent[/name] or [name]Matilda[/name], even [name]Amelia[/name]) than a full name.

[name]Zooey[/name] - I know [name]Zooey[/name] Deschanel spells her name like this, but it always looks like a jumbled mess of letters to me, personally. I think [name]Zoe[/name] is a fun name, much more modern in sound, like [name]Eve[/name] (or [name]Eva[/name], especially!), but still elegant and pretty.

[name]Pearl[/name] - [name]Pearl[/name] is cute, but it feels a bit too word-like for my taste. I love it as a middle name, and I like it as a nickname for [name]Margaret[/name]. It always reminds me of [name]Hester[/name] Prynne’s daughter, [name]Pearl[/name], in [name]Nathaniel[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name]'s “The [name]Scarlet[/name] Letter.”

[name]Willa[/name] - I love [name]Willa[/name]! It is fun and charming, simple and sweet, yet romantic and feminine. It is more along the lines of [name]Zoe[/name] to me, though, and it isn’t quite [name]Beatrix[/name].

[name]Lucy[/name] - [name]Lucy[/name] is a darling name! I think it is simply adorable!

[name]Isla[/name] - Very pretty, but I hear it a lot on NB. I do think it would pair very well with [name]Eve[/name], though! It is modern and playful, feminine and elegant!

[name]Lily[/name] - I prefer [name]Lucy[/name], or I prefer [name]Lilly[/name] as a nickname for [name]Lillian[/name]. I used to think [name]Lily[/name] was just the most perfect feminine, sweet, sugar-and-spice name for a little girl, but then I got to thinking it was a little too “…and everything nice” for my taste. I personally feel like it lacks a bit of substance, but that’s just my own opinion. Certainly pretty, but it isn’t doing much for me.

[name]Eleanor[/name] - I’ve not been much of an [name]Eleanor[/name] fan, but it is a beautiful classic name for a girl! I think that [name]Nell[/name] is a great, unexpected nickname for her, too, especially in a sea of [name]Ellie[/name]'s! [name]Eleanor[/name] is very much like [name]Evelyn[/name], though, in that she seems a bit reserved and shy, maybe a bit of a bookworm-type, and maybe not quite as fun and personable as, say, [name]Beatrix[/name]…

Okay, so I think [name]Beatrix[/name] takes the cake for me, here! Your style seems to be in two different places - the vintage classics and the more modern names. I think you just need to decide where your heart lies! Either way, you have a great list here to choose from!

By the way, I don’t love [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Eve[/name] or [name]Eve[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] (though [name]Eva[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] is nice!), but I don’t want you to give up on a name you truly love - if you decide to use both in one name, then so be it! However, depending on your last name, I think that [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] (Cunningham), [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] ([name]Porter[/name]), and [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name] ([name]Jones[/name]) are really stunning names!

Good luck!

[name]Lemon[/name]

[name]Hi[/name]!

I love [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Eve[/name] but maybe [name]Beatrix[/name] more because it has a longer, less abrupt flow and brings to mind [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name]. [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Eve[/name] is lovely!

[name]Evelyn[/name] is a pretty name as well but gaining popularity and there are many little girls being nicknamed [name]Evie[/name] at the moment, which is a pity because it is so cute. :frowning:

I prefer [name]Milly[/name] as a nickname for [name]Matilda[/name], which I adore!

I prefer [name]Zooey[/name] spelled [name]Zoe[/name] because whenever I see [name]Zooey[/name], I want to pronounce it like you would zoo with just an e sound tacked on at the end. I also prefer some of your other names.

I love [name]Pearl[/name] but more as a middle name. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Margaret[/name], as the meaning is ‘pearl’?

[name]Willa[/name] is not really my style, though I love [name]William[/name] for a boy.

I love [name]Lucy[/name]! It’s sweet and fun and simple. I like [name]Beatrix[/name] more though.

[name]Isla[/name] is darling but apparently it’s supposed to shoot up the popularity charts.

[name]Lily[/name] is one of my favorite names: unfortunately, it is the favorite name of a lot of other people, resulting in [name]Lily[/name]'s popularity at the moment. Due to this popularity, it isn’t my top choice from this list.

[name]Eleanor[/name] is beautiful! I love its easy elegance and lovely flow. From your list of alternatives to [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Eve[/name], it is my favorite.

Good luck!

I think they are both great choices…but I’ll vote for [name]Eve[/name]!

I think [name]Eve[/name] (or [name]Eva[/name]) is absolutely gorgeous and elegantly simple. I love it!

Also, [name]Eve[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] would work great in terms of flow, but [name]Eva[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] might be even better.

Thanks so much for all the replies! Hearing everyone’s reactions helps so much. My husband and I definitely have two distinct styles/tastes, so that explains the two styles of names that some of you noticed. Two names from our list that I accidentally left off are [name]Helena[/name] and [name]Juliette[/name]. One of our (my husband’s) concerns about [name]Beatrix[/name] is that our last name begins with B also. [name]Do[/name] you think that type of alliteration is unattractive with the b-sound?

[name]Hi[/name]! I personally love alliteration, so to me, the Beatrx B____ sound is attractive. (I do think it depends on the specific last name, though.)

Oh my gosh! I love [name]Helena[/name] and [name]Juliette[/name] so much, too! From your list of middles, I think that [name]Helena[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] and [name]Juliette[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] are gorgeous! I seriously love your list!

I honestly don’t think you can go wrong!

Take care!

love [name]Beatrix[/name]!

also from your list love: [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Willa[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Isla[/name].

I love both [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Eve[/name]. [name]Beatrix[/name] is my fave of the two names. Also love [name]Evelyn[/name] even more than [name]Beatrix[/name]. [name]Evelyn[/name] nn [name]Eve[/name] is a great choice.

I adore [name]Beatrix[/name], she is one of my favourties! [name]Eve[/name], not so much. A little bit ‘short and sweet’ for me. [name]Evie[/name] is cute, but I prefer [name]Edie[/name]… derived from [name]Edith[/name].

From your list I also like [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name], but [name]Beatrix[/name] stands out.

[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] is a gorgeous combination - suggested to me by [name]Lemon[/name], just last week!

I wonder why no one uses [name]Beatrice[/name] anymore. When I see [name]Beatrix[/name], I think “…trix are for kids!”

That being said, I like [name]Eve[/name].

I just love [name]Eve[/name]! I also sort of disagree with some of the previous characterizations of [name]Eve[/name] as modern or flashy. To me, [name]Eve[/name] is timeless. I also think of [name]Eve[/name] as more quiet than flashy (in fact I find the x ending of [name]Beatrix[/name] to be far flashier, with [name]Beatrice[/name] it’s much quieter sister). Now, by all means, [name]Eve[/name] is not shy, but I think of [name]Eve[/name] as studious and sophisticated, with a definite, but subtle, boldness; I just don’t think of [name]Eve[/name] as seeking the spotlight so much as accepting it gracefully when it comes her way.

I love them both. [name]Beatrix[/name] is my #1, so obviously that’s what I would pick, but [name]Eve[/name] is really beautiful. [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Eve[/name] has a better flow to my ears, but [name]Eve[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] is still nice. [name]Eva[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] is beautiful, too, but [name]Eva[/name] has quite a different feel than [name]Eve[/name], I think. I also love all your other names, but I would suggest using [name]Milly[/name] as a nickname, maybe for [name]Amelia[/name]? And I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Zoe[/name], but not spelled [name]Zooey[/name]. L

Have you considered [name]Beatriz[/name]??? I think it has a softer ending. Its even a little more elegant than [name]Beatrix[/name] (but perhaps not as cute). [name]Evelyn[/name] is on my short list, and its fading for me…I guess because its sounding more and more “mature” without enough spark. I think [name]Eve[/name] is sophisticated instead of mature, if that makes any sense.

[name]Eve[/name] might blend in with all the Evas, Eves, Evelyns, and Evas, but [name]Beatrix[/name] would stand out!
