Bellatrix?

What do you think of the name [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]?

It’s in the recent article on heavenly/night names…

why would the authors of nameberry put that it’s “not one you’d want to use for your child”???

Is [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] seriously as bad a villain name as “Scrooge”?

Has it been pigeonholed that much?

I read all of the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] series, and watched all of the movies, and I don’t even remember who [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is and I certainly would not remember the name as being from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].

Unless you’re a big fan of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], would anyone know???

And… in 10 years, would anyone remember???

I’m not a huge fan of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] but I definitely know who she is. As it happens I never liked the name before but if I did, it would be something to consider. I don’t think there is a huge association, especially in people who aren’t familiar with the series. As with any name, if you love it enough, it won’t matter what Nameberry/your friends/randomers on the street think.

Well, I took ages to catch up with the whole [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] bandwagon, and I didn’t have a clue who [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] was. In fact I first heard it here, on Nameberry, and I think because I started to like the name before I read the book, despite disliking the character, I’m okay with the name (although I haven’t watched all the films yet). Plus she went by [name_f]Bella[/name_f] quite a lot, so I just started to dislike [name_f]Bella[/name_f] even more, rather than [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]. I have a feeling in say 10 years, [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] may still scream [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], being the name of one of the main characters featured in every book, whereas the association may fade somewhat with [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], personally. I haven’t read the HP books (and have no intentions to), but I’ve heard people say that she’s a really evil lady in the books, and I think she was played by [name_f]Helena[/name_f] Bonham [name_u]Carter[/name_u]? I think it’s a nice name, and I have really no associations with it, but it’s hard to tell how far HP’s reaches will go by the time the children born in the 2010s are starting to read.

It almost seems too extravagant next to your other kiddos, though–I think [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] would fit in much better with [name_f]Elena[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], and [name_m]Archer[/name_m], as opposed to [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], but both are nice…

[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is a very strong, loyal and evil character, totally crazy. [name_f]IMO[/name_f], she is one of the most memorable character in HP (hello, she caused [name_m]Sirius[/name_m]'s death!) and as such, none that you want to associate your child with. However, her name is totally kick-ass and I love it!

With your other kids’ names I prefer [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] or maybe Viatrix, though.

Considering [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] LeStrange was responsible for most of the havoc caused in the final books, I find it shocking you [name_m]DON[/name_m]'T remember her. Due to the character, yes, I really, honestly and truly think it’s a bad choice for a child - in the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] world, [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is right on up with Voldemort (and surely you remember him?!). I find it really surprising that you don’t remember the name or character, if you’ve read all the books and movies, she’s really not a forgettable one?

It’s hard to say if anyone would know, but, any fan of [name_f]Helena[/name_f] Bonham [name_u]Carter[/name_u] would, considering she played [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]. In 10 years, some might not remember, no, but I know that everyone who grew up loving [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] like I did will.

I don’t know the HP character, but I think this name is terrible. It sounds like a joke, or maybe the name of a pet.

[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is definitely something that will be associated with [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and villains for the next 10+ years. You’d best to take that into consideration.

Unfortunately, the name Bellatrix will be forever associated with the character from Harry Potter for me. While I don’t mind the name itself, it always reminds me of absolute craziness and completely evil. She was super powerful and formidable and everything, but there is no way anyone who has read the books or seen the later movies will NOT remember her.

And I think the influence of the Harry Potter books (at least, if not the movies) is far reaching. It’s already a multi generational story. Almost everyone in my family has read it - from my mum to my older brother (5 years older then me) right down to our youngest siblings (8 years younger). My teachers when I was at school read it, my friends read it and their parents have read it. Harry Potter is going to be sticking around a while. If you really love the name, then there’s nothing stopping you, but I would take the fact that it’s so known into consideration.

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was that [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] was an evil witch’s name, just because it sounds like an evil witch’s name. Later on I realized it was the evil woman in HP. I don’t even like the real meaning: female warrior (war names are a turn off for me). I would say go with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. It’s so similar but it’s got a better meaning and sounds sweeter as well.

I quite like the name [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], but absolutely wouldn’t underestimate the nearly-universally known phenomenon that is [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. And yes, I think most everyone who’s read the books is going to remember the character and associate her name with insanity/evil. Which is kind of a shame, because it’s a pretty name.

Bit also like pps, I think [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] fits better with your kids’ [fantastic] names.

I have a [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], and even I get people asking me if I named her after the character [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]. And it’s not even from people you would expect. [name_f]My[/name_f] 50-something childless coworker asked me that. I agree with the others that you shouldn’t underestimate the reach of the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] books.
