Belle or River?

We are about to welcome our third baby (a girl) and we’ve been calling her [name_f]Belle[/name_f] for a good chunk of the pregnancy. Now that I’m about to deliver I’m getting cold feet. I’ve always loved the name [name_m]River[/name_m] and am wondering if we should rethink? Middle name is going to be [name_f]Marie[/name_f].

Siblings are [name_m]James[/name_m] [name_f]Day[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_m]Wilde[/name_m].

I think [name_f]Belle[/name_f] fits a little better with [name_m]James[/name_m] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (what a timeless and beautiful sibset you have!). [name_m]River[/name_m] would work; I just like [name_f]Belle[/name_f] a little better here. But could you maybe use [name_m]River[/name_m] as a middle name? [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_m]River[/name_m] or [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_m]River[/name_m] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]? [name_m]Or[/name_m] you could wait until she arrives and decide then which seems to suit her best?

Good luck!

I honestly second everything the previous poster said! [name_f]Belle[/name_f] feels like more of a natural match with [name_m]James[/name_m] & [name_f]Rose[/name_f] - more classic & familiar - but [name_m]River[/name_m] can definitely still work. I do know it’s fairly common for people to get nervous about their baby’s chosen name in the late stages of pregnancy, so I think it’s up to you to figure out if it’s just a case of last-moment nerves, or if [name_f]Belle[/name_f] really isn’t the one for you anymore.

If you’re just not sure, I like the the idea of [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_m]River[/name_m] or [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_m]River[/name_m] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]! That way you can have [name_m]River[/name_m] in there and you could always call her by her middle name if your hesitations about [name_f]Belle[/name_f] remain.

Hmmm that’s a tricky one!

I have a niece called Belle and it’s a charming and also (perhaps surprisingly given princess association) easy-breezy name in real life. But it’s normal to fall out of love with a name! The hard part is in figuring out if it’s late stage preggo nerves/hormones or a genuine realisation .

Meanwhile I have a friend with a daughter called River, which is Cali/beachy cool and an immediately likeable name.

River doesn’t work quite as well with James and Rose though. I’m someone who says always choose name for its own sake first (as child mostly their own person) and for coherence of sibset second, but I also think it’s good for sibling relations and kids’ identity (re who was favoured etc) if the names are broadly equitable - eg and I’m saying this off cuff so maybe not the best eg, James and Rose could feel like River got the the cool, “special” name, or River could wonder why she got the more unisex, slightly more “out there” name and not a classic. James and Rose are a little more versatile - for all ages & contexts.

I also think I’d try for a non R name, unless River or another R name really is your all-time love!

I wonder if there’s a Third Way, something peppy but still fairly classic and/or vintage, eg James, Rose &

Thea
Eve (one of the loveliest)
Piper
Daphne
Zoe
Laurel
Sienna
Ingrid “Indie”
Willa
Ivy
Cora
Oona
Phoebe
Meadow (like River but more Fem and tailored) Avalon (as above)
Winter (as above)
Olive (as above)

I know it’s the middle, but I’m genuinely vibing with Marie/Mary/Mara/Maria as firsts these days. Something so “clean”, spunky. and essentially pretty about them. James, Rose & Marie or one of the others on the list would be fab! Marie River or Mary River nn Mimi/Miri? Also means following the more classic first + more fun/creative second. Or as other have said, maybe mixing it in: Belle River / Belle River Marie/ Belle Mary River?

Marie River or Mary River would be my pick!

Hope this helps?

I definitely think [name_f]Belle[/name_f] matches better with [name_m]James[/name_m] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f]!

I completely agree with the previous posts - [name_f]Belle[/name_f] fits better with her siblings’ names :white_heart:

[name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is gorgeous, classy and very timeless however [name_m]River[/name_m] could easily be sneaked into the middle spot and just as previous Berries mentioned, you can always call her by her middle name in case it fits her better as she grows up. With that being said, [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_m]River[/name_m] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] gets my final vote :revolving_hearts:

I vote [name_m]River[/name_m]!

I love [name_m]River[/name_m] for a boy, but I’m not crazy about it for a girl. It’s a great name, however, in this case, [name_f]Belle[/name_f] gets my vote. [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is lovely, international and sweet. I also think J@mes, Ros€ and [name_f]Belle[/name_f] sound amazing together!

Absolutely love [name_f]Belle[/name_f] :snowflake: :ballet_shoes:

Honestly I adore [name_f]Belle[/name_f] she’s elegant, feels refreshing despite having a sound that is popular within a lot of popular names (ultimately it’s rare to meet someone named just Belle), evokes gorgeous wintry imagery and has a melodic sound. I think [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is beautiful! She’s one of my absolute favourite names. I also think [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is stylistically the best bet with Jam3s and R0se. Honestly your sibling set is so classic! I think [name_m]River[/name_m] is a great nature choice but I prefer especially with your sibling set [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. I like the idea of [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_m]River[/name_m] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] which @ashthedreamer suggested.

[name_f]Belle[/name_f] just goes so well with [name_m]James[/name_m] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is beautiful

I’m in love with [name_m]James[/name_m], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Belle[/name_f] together! Absolutely divine

[name_f]Belle[/name_f] feels more cohesive with siblings [name_m]James[/name_m] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] to me! as others suggested, [name_m]River[/name_m] could work as a second middle if that’s something you’re a fan of. [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_m]River[/name_m] would be my order of preference in that case, just based on flow.

and of course, congratulations!

I prefer [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. It is so underrated and full of charm.

Hmm, if James is a girl then I think River would be a nice tie between the more masculine James and feminine Rose to tie 3 sisters together. Pulling together the unisex feel of James and the nature vibe of Rose.

But if James is a boy, with the 2 traditional names James and Rose I do think stylistically Belle would be a better match (but I like thebsuggestion of adding River as a middle or 2nd middle to give her the same spunky/unexpected middle as true 1st 2)

But in the end I think choosing a name you love the most is the much more important than matching a sibset.

[name_f]Belle[/name_f] feels more cohesive, but I love [name_m]River[/name_m] a little more

[name_f]Belle[/name_f] is so elegant, and she sounds amazing with [name_m]James[/name_m] & [name_f]Rose[/name_f]! You can’t go wrong with either though – pick what you love!

I agree that [name_f]Belle[/name_f] feels more cohesive with [name_m]James[/name_m] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f].

Maybe consider [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_m]River[/name_m], or even [name_f]Marie[/name_f] as a first name.

Definitely [name_f]Belle[/name_f]! I do like [name_m]River[/name_m], but I would worry she’d feel like the odd one out compared to her siblings. [name_f]Belle[/name_f] just goes so well with [name_m]James[/name_m] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Belle[/name_f] so much and it’s a name I have on my own name list with the added bonus of being a family name for me

With your kids’ names I still prefer [name_f]Belle[/name_f] with them

Part of the reason I also lean more towards [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is because I have seen [name_m]River[/name_m] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] paired multiple times both as a full name for someone’s kid and as siblings named [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_m]River[/name_m]

They’re both loved names which is why they’re paired together so often but I always prefer the less heard of and more uncommon names for the most part so [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is my pick hands down!!

Also [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is just so so so pretty!!

Both are great, but I would go with [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
