Belphoebe - what would you think?

My question is about Belphoebe. Due to recent posts, I’ve become a big fan! I usually like magical names that are obvious. Names that don’t really need an explanation, or names that prompt an explanation. Which is why literary names usually aren’t my style. Most of the time earthy/word/celestial nature names are my preference. My question is - if you didn’t know anything about Belphoebe, and you were meeting someone with the name, hearing it for the first time, what would you think? Without knowing anything about TFQ, would it strike you as a name that’s special? Magical? Beautiful? What would come to mind???

I would think her name was [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. I have no idea what the word belphoebe means and I would think it was a kind of unusual name. Maybe even a little odd. I definitely wouldn’t spell it right! [name_m]Just[/name_m] my first impression though.

I think the “bel” prefix is a little much. I like the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] though, and it’s a very spunky name. It’s often associated with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] Buffay from Friends, though, but personally I love that show and that character so it’d be an interesting namesake. Her friends would probably end up calling her Phoebes no matter what. I just feel like Belphoebe is a bit of a mouthful.

I would be confused and think I’d misheard. Then I’d think the person’s parents had tried to get a little too creative. Sorry. I do really like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] though.

I think it’s odd. I don’t know what a belphoebe is though.

I am in love with this name as of recently. I can’t get it out of my head. I keep juggling between loving it as a quirky first and thinking it would be better in the middle spot ([name_f]Alice[/name_f] Belphoebe is my current pick).

It evokes such a magical air in my mind. Pulling from my post on [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]'s thread: Dark starry nights, the clash of silvers swords, gardens of primrose and nightshade. When I say it, it just rolls off my tongue so effortlessly, which is a must when I consider names. Until I looked it up, I had no idea about TFQ so it already felt magical to me, but the connection is nice.

Belphoebe is secretive and strong, she smells like roses and has eyes the color of chocolate. You can tell I am a little bit crazy haha but this is just how I imagine names, and if I can’t get a strong “magical” feeling from a name, I’m not as drawn to it as I could be.

When I asked my dad about it, he said “if you were called Belphoebe you would hate your name” and my mom said “I’d just call her [name_f]Belle[/name_f]”, which aren’t exactly positives for me. I also wouldn’t want her to be bullied for having a “strange” or “quirky” name, which is something I worry about whenever I’m looking at names. It is also a bit of a mouthful, and I would hate for it to be shortened to Phee, [name_f]Belle[/name_f] or [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] since I am a strong believer in being addressed by your full name and having your friends call you by your full name, it would kind of annoy me to have it constantly shortened. Also, she would constantly have to correct spellings and pronunciations most likely.

I am in love with this name as of recently. Recent posts have sparked my love for this name as well and now I can’t get it out of my head. I keep juggling between loving it as a quirky first and thinking it would be better in the middle spot (Alice Belphoebe is my current pick).

I agree. Belphoebe is such magical, beautiful and feminine name.

I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] are so much prettier.

Something feels off about the name as a whole.

I would think, “Why did she smash those two names together? Did they also consider Leedaphne and Ellesophie and Lynophelia and Annechloe?”

Honestly, I’m vaguely aware of it being a name, but it seems rather silly for real life.

I’m the same way! Names that don’t feel magical to me, seem a little plain. Lol, you’re not crazy! I see imagery, colors, and feel emotions from names too (blame it on the synesthesia)! I love your imagery by the way, made me love the name even more! I felt a little “spark” from the name before I learned anything about it too. I think the name is definitely unusual, but in a very good way! I love it as a first name! I wouldn’t mind the occasional shortening to [name_f]Bel[/name_f]/[name_f]Belle[/name_f] or Fi, but I would want to use the full Belphoebe 95% of the time. Pronunciation and spelling would be an issue, but I think it would be totally worth it! Thanks for your reply!

I am familiar with TFQ, and while I love it, I just find Belphoebe impractical and “over the top” for a real girl. It’s one of those names where I like the reference more than I like the actual name; one of my favorites used to be [name_m]Benedick[/name_m], before I realized I was really just in love with Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] About Nothing.
If you break it up, and to most ignorant ears, Belphoebe is just an odd double-barrel of [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], two mega-popular names stuffed into a [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f]-esque morphing. [name_f]Belle[/name_f], while perhaps ethereal and exotic in the time of TFQ’s writing, is no longer so, and frankly, a little plain. [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is a hit or miss for most; I personally dislike it, as she will forever remind me of the ditz at the end of All About [name_f]Eve[/name_f], and every [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] I’ve met has been one of the duller knives in the drawer.

To be perfectly honest, it sounds like you couldn’t decide between [name_f]Belle[/name_f] or [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and decided to just mash the two together. I’ve never heard of this name before, and it sounds kind of made up. I love the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]…maybe Belphoebe would be more useable as a middle name.

It strikes me as a made up name, two great names ([name_f]Belle[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]) stuck together. That’s just my impression though!

I think it’s pretty, but I also recognize it as a legitimate name. Most people will think it’s [name_f]Belle[/name_f]-[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].

I would think pshooowpow mind-blown by awesomeness hahaha. I adore Belphoebe and I don’t know if I would be able to contain myself if I met a little Belphoebe! I think it’s so stunning. Much as I love [name_f]Belle[/name_f]/[name_f]Bella[/name_f] names, I don’t love [name_f]Belle[/name_f] on its own, and I find [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] rather whiney and annoying. But Belphoebe?! I adore it. I would think her parents were brilliant. I don’t have the guts to use it, but I would be so happy to see someone who did. I would think all of the above–special, magical, memorable, beautiful, charming.

What in the world is not to like?!

My thoughts exactly . Stunning name !!

I’ve loved this one for ages, so I can’t give an unbiased first impression, but here’s my two cents:

Sure, it’s a smoosh name. But I think that’s a point in its favor–while it’s a unique, out-there name, it’s made up of familiar sounds. Its literary history makes it much more appealing than any other smoosh name to me, and it really rolls off the tongue.

Gah. I just adore Belphoebe so much! I get images of hidden clearings, fairy circles, moss and beautiful, old trees…it’s so gorgeous. It’s on my list as a middle, but I think it’s actually a lot more wearable than some of my firsts.

I would think I heard [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. And once I realized they were both part the same name I would think the parents got creative by putting the two names together. I think it’s a pretty enough name, but I’m not sure it would be well received by most.

I’m familiar with the namesake, and yet I just can’t find any magic in this name. Belphoebe leaves me cold. It feels awkward and forced to me. I’m not a fan of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] or [name_f]Bel[/name_f] names, which is probably why. If I met a Belphoebe, I’d be charmed because of her namesake, but not the name so much. Sorry. [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is a much prettier name for a magical huntress imo.

I’m sorry to be mean, but honestly, it sounds like vomit. Letters too close to “Bleh / Belch”
