Bendigo?

I just found this as the title of a [name]Louis[/name] L’Amour novel, “Bendigo [name]Shafter[/name].” I haven’t read it yet, I just picked it up long enough to see that Bendigo [name]Shafter[/name] helped build a Western settlement and that he and his brothers were named by their father, a Bible-reading man. Bendigo has to be a corruption of Abed-nego (from the story of Shadrach, [name]Meshach[/name] and Abed-nego in the fiery furnace.) What do you think? I was really taken with it, but I don’t know as I like the name’s origin. I love the story, but it always annoys me when a preacher or teacher says “Abendego” instead of “Abed-nego.” It happens often! Abed-nego is hard to say. But Bendigo is pretty cool. [name]Do[/name] you think it could work in the “real world”? Only if you were a [name]Louis[/name] L’Amour fan?
I’ll also post this in the Boys’ Names forum.

When I hear Bendigo I can only think of the town in Australia. I wouldn’t personally use it as a person’s name, but if you don’t live in Australia then it could work.

I didn’t know it was the name of an Australian town! I had a similar comment in the Boys’ Names forum. Since I’m in the U.S. it probably wouldn’t come up very often, though.

I love it. I has strong historical footing and sounds rustic and cool. I also love Shadrach and was happy to see it make the mainstream in the show The Finder.

It’s kinda interesting.

My first thought was that it was an alteration of Abednego from the Bible, didn’t know it was an Australian town.

It’s definitely different but I sorta like it. You can use [name]Ben[/name] and it’s a way to get to [name]Indy[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name] without using just [name]Indigo[/name].

In Australia it is the name of a town AND a bank!
[name]Just[/name] a bit of trivia for you there

Sorry to say but Bendigo sounds like a mobility disease to me. It makes me think of vertigo (dizziness) and vitilago (skin disease) too.

Thanks for the new comments, lolly1019, kala_way, liana and mischa! I posted this way back in [name]March[/name], so I was pleasantly surprised to see it come up again. Yes, since then I’ve put Shadrach on my dream list–love it! I still think Bendigo is cool and am glad some people like it. I don’t know if I’d be brave enough to really use it, though.
