I have been crushing on the name/nickname [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for a bit now (again), and it’s just hit me that the reason I’ve never committed to [name_u]Rory[/name_u] before is that I can’t really picture me with a just [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. I don’t have a problem seeing someone actually named [name_u]Rory[/name_u], and I find it completely respectable, and I do love it, but I feel like maybe I need [name_u]Rory[/name_u] to be a nn to see me using it.
What names can you see with [name_u]Rory[/name_u] as the nickname? Especially that would fit in with the rest of my list? I feel like [name_m]Gregory[/name_m], [name_m]Riordan[/name_m], [name_m]Roderick[/name_m], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]/[name_m]Ronan[/name_m]/[name_m]Roman[/name_m], [name_m]Robert[/name_m], etc., are often bantered about as a full name for [name_u]Rory[/name_u], but none of those really appeal to me ([name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] appeal the most, but my boss’s name is [name_m]Gregory[/name_m], and that would just be weird, and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u] seems like a pretty huge stretch to me).
Well, other than [name_m]Ruari[/name_m] itself I can’t find any other names with the ‘ror’ sound and I don’t agree with the idea that merely having an ‘or’ sound in name meaning that [name_u]Rory[/name_u] can be a nickname for that name.
[name_u]Loren[/name_u], or [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] (Maybe even [name_m]Laurent[/name_m]?) could be [name_u]Rory[/name_u] (just like a female [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]). [name_m]Ruben[/name_m] or [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] seem like natural Rorys to me, too.
I don’t think [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] to [name_u]Rori[/name_u] is much of a stretch. A Celtic (Irish/Welsh) name would ber ideal, but perhaps [name_m]Rodrigo[/name_m] or Ariston.
[name_m]Rourke[/name_m]
Rorrik/Roric/Rorick
[name_u]Amory[/name_u]
Diggory
Ellory
Moriarty – I know you won’t like this one but I love it
[name_m]Roark[/name_m] (famous, champion)
Hm, good prompt! My first thoughts are [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m], and [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]. I’m especially fond of [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] as a long form for [name_u]Rory[/name_u] – I think this would be a great spin on a classic name.
haha, this is true! I love the tie to [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] [name_m]Holmes[/name_m] in general, but I’m not exactly a fan of the fact that he’s [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]'s nemesis, haha. Moriarty even sounds evil! If it wasn’t for him, though, I think I would like it. It has a certain appeal to it, actually. I still wouldn’t use it, but I appreciate the gesture.
The others don’t really appeal to me. I like Roric (sp?) the best, but it still seems off to me, more of an elaboration of [name_u]Rory[/name_u] than a full name for it (sort of like [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] as a fuller name for [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as opposed to [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]…). I want to like Digory, because I’m quite obsessed with [name_f]Narnia[/name_f], but I just never really loved the Professor. Too bad [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] don’t yield [name_u]Rory[/name_u].
@augusta_lee - I agree, [name_u]Rory[/name_u] really rejuvenates [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]! In fact, I wrote a story once about a Special Forces soldier whose name was [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u]–I was rereading it this week, which is what prompted my latest crush on [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. I just feel like now that it’s my boss’s name, it would be extraordinarily awkward to use [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]. Plus, I can’t unsee my boss’s face when I think of [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]. When I wrote the story, I had no ties to [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] really, so I really liked the idea of [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u] (although [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]'s never been a huge favorite of mine). [name_m]Alas[/name_m].
Does anyone have ideas for longer girls names to get nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u]? I love [name_u]Rory[/name_u] too, but prefer as a girls name. And I think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] can be used as a nickname even if the original name is slightly different (i.e. [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]).
Usually [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] is not a name I care for…but with the nn. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is seems fresher and much more appealing. I agree it is too bad [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] is not more usuable…lol.
I think [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] nickname [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is very reasonable. My daughter is an [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_u]Rory[/name_u] but I love it for boys too (more as a full name than nickname though).
Okay I can help [name_u]Ash[/name_u] as just this week I met a lady who is having a baby that she is going to name Alori. She said that her partner is Sudanese and the name means “on the right path”.
