My son’s favorites at age one were:
Squeak Rumble Whomp Whomp Whomp by Wyton Marsalis
Anything by [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Wise [name_m]Brown[/name_m] (Goodnight [name_f]Moon[/name_f], The Big [name_u]Red[/name_u] [name_m]Barn[/name_m]…)
Jamberry
Mr [name_m]Brown[/name_m] Can Moo, Can You?
His clear favorites were books that required the reader to make funny noises. Kids at that age love animal noises and silly sounds and rhymes. Most one year olds are not so much interested in the storyline just yet. I just read a very clever article all about how books like Jamberry increase something called phonological awareness, which help children develop their speech.
I do a baby storytime at my library. I can tell you that anything with a tactile component is a big hit at that age. The Noodle books are awesome. This is a good one.
Also, [name_f]Sandra[/name_f] [name_m]Boynton[/name_m] is great for toddlers. I really likethis one.
I like to get board books for little ones, because they can handle them without worrying about ripping pages. But if you want to get a bigger kid book, I love, love, love everything [name_u]Mo[/name_u] Willems does. The Pigeon books and Elephant and Piggie are more for Pre-school aged kids, but he’ll grow into them.
Our favorite baby book is “Time for Bed” by Mem [name_m]Fox[/name_m].
Also love “Can you see a [name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_m]Bear[/name_m]” by [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Mayhew[/name_m].
Those ones are both rhyming and repetitive and have gorgeous illustrations so they are almost hypnotic for our little one at bed time.
[name_m]Kevin[/name_m] Henkes was my favorite author pretty much through toddlerhood. He does these adorable, and also pretty hilarious, books about mice that are too awesome. [name_m]Julius[/name_m], [name_u]Baby[/name_u] of the World and [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] are my favorites.
Thank you all for the suggestions! I went a little crazy and spent like fifty bucks on books for him :D. ksilvia, [name_u]Keven[/name_u] Henkes’ books were some of my childhood favorites too! I wonder if my mother still has them anywhere to pass on to him… I also added a [name_f]Sandra[/name_f] [name_m]Boynton[/name_m] to my purchases, one of the hippo books. I’m saddened to find one of my other childhood faves, [name_m]Tomi[/name_m] Ungerer, isn’t widely available anymore.
[name_f]My[/name_f] daughter really likes books with photographs rather than drawings. She also likes dr. Seuss and other rhymey, sing song type books
Some my boys loved:
Lots of dots ([name_m]Craig[/name_m] [name_m]Frazier[/name_m]) (not a board book, but very popular with my little guys under supervision)
Peek a Who ([name_f]Nina[/name_f] Laden)
Deer Zoo ([name_m]Rod[/name_m] [name_u]Campbell[/name_u])
Hug ([name_f]Jez[/name_f] Alborough)
Hop on Pop (Dr. Seuss)
Fuzzy Fuzzy Fuzzy ([name_f]Sandra[/name_f] [name_m]Boynton[/name_m])
Me [name_u]Love[/name_u] Cookies ([name_f]Sesame[/name_f] [name_m]Street[/name_m] book)
Good [name_m]Night[/name_m] Good [name_m]Night[/name_m] Construction Site (maybe for a tad bit older, but I think my boys got it around 18 months and have loved it ever since)
[name_m]Just[/name_m] a few that come to mind. Good luck!
I was actually looking at Good [name_m]Night[/name_m] Good [name_m]Night[/name_m] Construction Site! Didn’t get it this time but I’ll have plenty more opportunities to spoil him in the near future :D.
[name_f]My[/name_f] boys both loved all the [name_m]Eric[/name_m] [name_f]Carle[/name_f] books.
