Between two

We are torn between two boys’ names. One day I am sure about one, and the next day it’s the other. We aren’t going to find out the sex of the baby, and while we have our girls’ name ready to go, I am feeling a little stuck with our boys’ choice.

I am wondering if you lovely Berries could tell me your preference, and why you prefer it. We aren’t looking for new suggestions, but aren’t opposed to suggestions either.

The names are [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], and [name_m]Desmond[/name_m].

[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
Pros: I’ve loved this name for years, it has a nice meaning (wealthy friend), and the nn [name_u]Win[/name_u] is pretty cool.
Cons: We both dislike the nn [name_m]Ed[/name_m]. [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] isn’t much better.

[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
Pros: [name_u]Early[/name_u] on in my pregnancy, I had several dreams that we named the baby this. I’ve never met anyone with this name, and there aren’t really any nicknames, other than [name_m]Des[/name_m], which we are both fine with.
Cons: Meaning is fairly dull. We don’t like the nn [name_u]Desi[/name_u], and [name_u]Desi[/name_u] was also a character on I [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], a show which my [name_f]MIL[/name_f] is obsessed with. I’m sort of worried about annoying references to that.

Middle names are set in stone and will be [name_m]Keith[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] (or, potentially, [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m]). Last name is one syllable, starts with a P, and rhymes with mouse.

Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated in helping us make our decision. Thank you!

[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m]

[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m]

[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m] has better flow, but I like [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] more.

I prefer [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]. [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m] sounds better than [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m], and for some reason I’ve never been able to take [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] seriously as a name.

Wow, [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] is getting lots of love today! Usually it gets more mixed reviews.

Anyone else have any input?

I love [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]! It was shot down by my husband, though, who preferred [name_m]Edward[/name_m].

It is quite possible that little [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] will decide someday that he’d like to go by [name_m]Ed[/name_m]. Would that bother you?

I like both names too  Other nameberries have said it’s hard to avoid nicknames and I’m sure both of those will turn into [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] and [name_u]Desi[/name_u] at some point. I think I’d go for [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]

I appear to be in the minority but I really like [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]! Besides just having a preference for it we often don’t have that much control over the nickname and usually [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] “defaults” to [name_m]Ed[/name_m], or [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] when he is young. [name_f]IMO[/name_f], [name_m]Des[/name_m] is a more interesting name.

I happen to love [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]! I think [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m] P_______ flows nicely, and [name_u]Win[/name_u] is a great nickname! If you don’t like [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] and [name_m]Ed[/name_m], [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] could be another nickname for when he’s little.

[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]! Aside from the fact that I love [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], it also seems less likely to have nicknames you don’t like. You can only control what you call him, but it seems that [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] would be more likely to have [name_m]Ed[/name_m] or [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] come up at some point from someone. [name_u]Desi[/name_u] still might happen, but [name_m]Des[/name_m] is still the more obvious choice for an easy nickname.

I like both but I love [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]. [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] is a little stuffy to me. [name_m]Des[/name_m]/[name_m]Dez[/name_m] is such a cute nn!

I personally prefer [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], but there’s something to be said for having a dream that you named your baby [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]. I think it gives the name a deeper connection and makes it more special. Stories behind why people chose names has always been very interesting to me, and I think when your son grows up it would be nice to hear that his name came to you in a dream…
Both names are really good choices, so you can’t go wrong!

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]! I think it is more interesting than [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]. I really like the nn [name_m]Des[/name_m]. [name_u]Desi[/name_u] could be a fun connection for your [name_f]MIL[/name_f] but I dont think it’ll go any further than that. [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] isn’t exactly the best flow but I don’t think it matters.

I think [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] will inevitably turn into [name_m]Ed[/name_m] or [name_m]Eddie[/name_m], which you don’t love!

Thank you everyone your kind comments and opinions. I’m still feeling torn, but this has been incredibly helpful!

[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] is a great choice; classic but not common.

We have [name_m]Edison[/name_m] on our list and also aren’t keen on the [name_m]Ed[/name_m]- nicknames so we’d be using [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] if we went ahead with this choice

Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy and in selecting your perfect name.

I lovelovelove [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]! [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m] is super handsome, as well. I’m not hugely keen on [name_m]Des[/name_m] or [name_u]Desi[/name_u], either, and I’ve only heard of one [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] in real life (the stepson of a radio talk show host that I listen to). It sounds like, from the show, he only goes by [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], but it’s really hard to tell. [name_u]Desi[/name_u] is no more syllables than [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], so I don’t understand why he’d need a nn? I know a little [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] who is ALWAYS [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], so I wouldn’t use a nn, personally. [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] is fantastic; I’m on his side 100%.

[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] is alright, and I do like [name_u]Win[/name_u] as a nn, but I don’t like it as much as [name_m]Edward[/name_m] or [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], or [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], honestly.

Good luck!

I love the name [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], and I wouldn’t be too worried about the nn. If you correct people once, that usually takes care of that. Although I don’t like [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] as much, the pros/cons you listed for it seem more positive overall.

Thanks everyone! This has been super helpful so far!

[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] makes me think of the character from LOST, which is a very positive association for me. I’m not as fond of [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], although I much prefer it to [name_m]Edward[/name_m]. Seeing as how you like the nn [name_u]Win[/name_u], would you consider just [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] as a fn? The meaning is very nice…blessed, white, fair. Good luck!
