Beyond the top 1000 of yesteryear

So I have the current up to date SSA data on my computer and I thought it would be fun to pick out some interesting and fun names from below the top 1000 of every decade from the 1960’s to now. If you want earlier decades or a boys version let me know however there are much less babies and variety in those previous lists especially on the boys side.

1964 -

To make the list proper in 1964 you needed 115 babies. Yolanda capped off the top 1000.

1986 -

To make the list in 1986 you needed 155 babies. Shara rounded out the list after dropping 152 places. Also before anyone asks for this section yes these are all girls names - I actually had to limit it because there were more traditionally boys names for girls that I didn’t list.

Great lists! I’m surprised how close some of these came to the Top 1000 – although of course the relative popularity of Top 1000 names has changed a lot over the years.

I love…

Super interesting! It’s surprising to me that hundreds of little girls received names like [name_m]Richard[/name_m] and [name_m]Steven[/name_m], which I can’t picture on a girl at all.

Overall, [name_f]Concetta[/name_f], [name_f]Inez[/name_f], [name_u]Tatum[/name_u], [name_f]Rosalba[/name_f], [name_f]Daijah[/name_f], [name_f]Maricruz[/name_f], [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f], and [name_f]Flor[/name_f] are my favorites of the names.

This was probably just a placeholder name given when the parents didn’t fill out the birth certificate. Same thing with my late brother, his legal name was Boy.

It’s possible however I think the US data is based on who gets registered for a social security number (which all babies are required to have in the US) as well as birth certificates. I also couldn’t find it anywhere else in the data either in the years prior I checked nor in the years after. I could be wrong however.

I actually like…
