Biblical Names

There are a ton of great ones, i’m just wondering what everyone’s favorites are. Mine are:

Boy: [name]Gabriel[/name], [name]Lucas[/name], [name]Noah[/name]
Girl: [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Elisha[/name], [name]Hannah[/name], or [name]Anna[/name]

Sorry if I’m wrong but isn’t [name]Elisha[/name] a boy???

Boys: [name]Samson[/name], [name]Nehemiah[/name]
Girls:[name]Esther[/name], [name]Miriam[/name]

[name]Elisha[/name]'s a boy, yes.

A few of my favourites:

Girls: [name]Keturah[/name], [name]Eva[/name], [name]Sarah[/name], [name]Rebecca[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Miriam[/name], [name]Bathsheba[/name], [name]Delilah[/name], [name]Jezebel[/name], [name]Esther[/name], [name]Judith[/name]

Boys: [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Judah[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Noah[/name], [name]Moses[/name], [name]Samson[/name], [name]Solomon[/name] ([name]Silas[/name], [name]Lazarus[/name], [name]Melchior[/name], [name]Caspar[/name], [name]Balthazar[/name])

in the Bible, [name]Elisha[/name] was a boy, yes, but i like the name for a girl and prounounced like [name]Alisha[/name] but with an E sound at the beginning instead of an A sound. I prefer [name]Elijah[/name] for a boy.

For Girls: [name]Noemi[/name], [name]Sarah[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Miriam[/name], [name]Rebekah[/name], [name]Esther[/name], [name]Ruth[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Hannah[/name], and [name]Mary[/name]

For Boys: [name]Lucas[/name], [name]Timothy[/name], [name]Moses[/name], [name]Emmanuel[/name], [name]Isaac[/name], [name]Isaiah[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Elias[/name], and [name]Elijah[/name]

For boys: [name]Luke[/name], [name]Andrew[/name], [name]Micah[/name], [name]David[/name], [name]Titus[/name], [name]Jude[/name], [name]Roman[/name], [name]Eli[/name], [name]Samuel[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Samson[/name], [name]Linus[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Nathanael[/name]… Etc etc etc

For girls: [name]Anna[/name], [name]Merry[/name], [name]Esther[/name], [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Leah[/name]… Generally not as many.

[name]Elisha[/name] is generally pronounced ee-LYE-shah, if I’m remembering correctly. People in my church tend to say Bible names differently from the rest of the world (EE-free-yum as opposed to EFF-rum, for example), so I could be wrong there, too. If you like [name]Alicia[/name], just use [name]Alicia[/name]. I just don’t understand the idea of taking a Biblical masculine name ([name]Micah[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Jonah[/name], [name]Judah[/name], etc!) and using them on girls. [name]Just[/name] because they end in an “A” doesn’t mean they’re feminine. :frowning:

I’m a HUGE fan of Biblical names for boys, some for girls, but not as much as boys.

[name]Caleb[/name]
[name]Asher[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name]
[name]Daniel[/name]
[name]Joshua[/name]
[name]Judah[/name]
[name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name]
[name]Elijah[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name]
[name]Samuel[/name]
[name]Boaz[/name] (LOVING this right now!)
[name]Benjamin[/name]
[name]Noah[/name]
[name]Micah[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]
[name]Silas[/name]
[name]Josiah[/name]
[name]Ezekiel[/name] (I mostly love this for [name]Zeke[/name], though…)
[name]Adam[/name]
[name]Aaron[/name]
etc.

[name]Rachel[/name]
[name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Eve[/name] (although I’m loving [name]Eva[/name] and [name]Genevieve[/name] more these days)
[name]Miriam[/name]/[name]Mary[/name] (I’m loving [name]Mary[/name]'s variants more, but I still do like the name)
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]

And I love the Hebrew [name]Shoshana[/name], but not the more traditional/Biblical [name]Susannah[/name] as much.

I’m partial to [name]Caleb[/name], [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Eli[/name], [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Asher[/name], [name]Gad[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Jared[/name], [name]Seth[/name], [name]Simon[/name], [name]Peter[/name], [name]Raphael[/name], [name]Thaddeus[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], and [name]Lazaro[/name] for boys

and [name]Dina[/name], [name]Leah[/name], and [name]Marta[/name] for girls

I agree that biblical are the best ones. Thanks for sharing here at http://www.nameberry.com

Mine are:

Boys:
[name]Daniel[/name]
[name]Timothy[/name]
[name]Samuel[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name]
[name]David[/name]
[name]Peter[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name].

Girls:
[name]Rebecca[/name] ("[name]Rebecca[/name]" is the spelling used in Romans 9:10 KJV, and “[name]Rebecca[/name]” also happens to be the earlier Biblical spelling. It the only spelling of the name in the Latin Vulgate Bible that was used since the 4th century A.D. before the Bible was translated into English.)
[name]Susanna[/name] (This is the spelling in [name]Luke[/name] 8:3 KJV.)
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Eve[/name]

you know i’ve noticed that people are kind of rude on here about the way that they think things should be pronounced or spelled. you can state your opinion without being rude to someone else. I like [name]Elisha[/name] for a girl because i had a good friend when i was younger with that name and that particular spelling. I would never use [name]Alicia[/name] or [name]Elisha[/name] for a daughter because i’m partial to family names, and there isn’t anyone in my family with either. I was simply stating my opinion and i did so without insulting anyone else or making them feel bad for their likes or dislikes. The more i post in this forum, the more i feel like deleting this account because, even though most of the people here are really nice, i just don’t feel like getting my likes/dislikes insulted on a regular basis by people i don’t know.
So what if i like [name]Elisha[/name] for a girl. I don’t like a lot of the names that most people find to be beautiful for girls… but you don’t see me telling someone “if you like [name]Alicia[/name], then just use [name]Alicia[/name]…”

You asked for favourite names from the bible, right? [name]Elisha[/name] is a male in the Bible, and therefore transferring on to a girl takes away the fact that you’re asking about biblical names when you mention [name]Elisha[/name] for a girl with a completely different pronunciation. It isn’t the same name from the Bible.

The thing is it’s the internet and you need to take what people say with a pinch of salt. You’re right that you don’t know these people so why take on board or feel insulted by their comments? You don’t have to take them on board and by the sound of it they won’t change your opinion so just read them and move on. A forum is all about opinions and that’s exactly what you are going to get.

I’m about 99% this comment is directed at me. If you love [name]Elisha[/name] for a girl, use [name]Elisha[/name] for a girl. I agree with @sheflieswithherownwings, I don’t know why my opinion should matter so much. As a [name]Christian[/name], though, I have to say that it bothers me that someone appropriates a name from my culture and twists it and uses it however they like. This isn’t just [name]Elisha[/name], this is using [name]Ezra[/name] on a girl, this is people naming their sons [name]Messiah[/name] and their daughters [name]Trinity[/name]. It’s offensive to me, much like [name]Cohen[/name] is offensive to Jews. That’s why I spoke up, not because I wanted to offend, but because using Biblical names like that bothers me. I had no idea [name]Elisha[/name] had so much significance to you. I’m not trying to start an argument, and I’m not trying to offend, and even if you’re not a [name]Christian[/name], you have every reason to use [name]Elisha[/name] if you want.

Girls:
[name]Abigail[/name], [name]Anna[/name], [name]Bethany[/name], [name]Dinah[/name], [name]Eve[/name], [name]Hannah[/name], [name]Jael[/name], [name]Jemima[/name], [name]Joanna[/name], [name]Kezia[/name], [name]Leah[/name], [name]Mary[/name], [name]Phebe[/name], [name]Rebekah[/name], [name]Sara[/name], [name]Susanna[/name], [name]Tabitha[/name], [name]Tamar[/name]

Boys:
[name]Abraham[/name], [name]Adam[/name], [name]Asher[/name], [name]Benjamin[/name], [name]Caleb[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], [name]James[/name], [name]Josiah[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Matthias[/name], [name]Moses[/name], [name]Nathanael[/name], [name]Reuben[/name], [name]Samuel[/name], [name]Simon[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], [name]Zebulun[/name]

Boy: [name]Samson[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Malachi[/name], [name]Zebulon[/name], [name]Jonathan[/name], Nechemya, [name]Judah[/name], [name]Saul[/name], [name]Josiah[/name], [name]Jethro[/name], [name]Isaac[/name], [name]Hezekiah[/name], [name]Eli[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], Cyrus.
Girl: [name]Jael[/name], [name]Tamar[/name], [name]Kezia[/name], [name]Esther[/name], [name]Mara[/name], [name]Naomi[/name], [name]Michal[/name].

I like [name]Jael[/name] best pronounced ya-el, which is how I grew up hearing it. I like [name]Kezia[/name] best pronounced ke-tzee-ah, or keh-zee-uh, but there’s a bunch of versions in rotation.

[name]IRL[/name] my husband would never agree to [name]Hezekiah[/name], [name]Levi[/name], or [name]Zebulon[/name] and in fact I’m not supposed to ever mention any of the three.
He also doesn’t like [name]Hannah[/name] or [name]Tamar[/name] and we can’t use [name]Naomi[/name], but I love all of them and this is my list.
