Our 7yr old daughter has decided she wants to call our baby boy “[name_m]Joseph[/name_m]”. Husband kinda likes [name_m]Joe[/name_m]… I feel its just ‘ok’…but would like to see him first. My daughter [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is adamant his name is [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and gets quite angry about exploring other names. I said he may not look like a [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]…she said 'dont worry Mum, I’ll make him look like one"!
Worried about taking away her feeling of control & imput to the new addition by not going with [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]. I really dont have any better ideas at the moment. Cant think straight & 9 wks to go. I like [name_u]James[/name_u] but that would revert to [name_m]Jim[/name_m]. I like strong traditional names that if at all possible cannot be shortened. Middle names [name_m]Steven[/name_m] or [name_m]William[/name_m]… last name Lanning. Has to go well with [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Has cousins [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Reuben[/name_m], [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] & [name_u]Colby[/name_u]. Any ideas, folks ? 
I have a hard time comprehending a post stating that big sister “chose” the name. She’s 7. If it’s not the name you and hubby agree on, it’s not the name.

I would try to allow her to have control in other ways like deciding what sort of decorations to put in his nursery, helping pick out books she wants to read to him or asking her how to show you how she’s going to care for her baby brother using a doll. It’s a healthy boundary to explain maturely that you’re going to name the baby something else mommy and daddy love, but you really appreciate her suggestion. Once you have a firm list of 2-3 names you both love equally you could ask for her input on a final name, but even that’s not necessary; she’s 7 and you are her mother. I guarantee she’ll love whatever you chose once she associates it with her little brother. It might seem harsh, but you can give her more appropriate control for her age that will assist her in coping with the transition of adding a new baby. You should not feel controlled by your 7 year old; if you do something is off!

My brother is [name_u]James[/name_u] and no one has ever called him [name_m]Jim[/name_m] or [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] or [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] or anything. I know multiple other little Jameses who only go by [name_u]James[/name_u]. People don’t automatically call people named [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Jim[/name_m], like they would [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_u]Alex[/name_u]. I prefer [name_u]James[/name_u] to [name_m]Joseph[/name_m].
I love [name_u]James[/name_u]! It’s classic and strong and handsome, and I don’t think [name_m]Jim[/name_m] will come up as a nickname anymore, [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] or JJ or [name_u]Jay[/name_u], is much more likely now. And wow what a sweet little spitfire you’ve got haha! It’s great that she’s so determined, and like katiem333 mentioned above, telling her that picking a name that all of you agree on is much more fair, so once you get a list of two or three you can all decide!
