[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I just found out we are expecting our first child together (and don’t know the gender yet) - he was born in [name_f]Russia[/name_f], I was born in Australia, and we live between the US and Australia.
We want a name that has ties to both heritages, and can be pronounced in both languages. Looking for any suggestions!!
Congratulations! I don’t really know any names with specifically Australian ties, but here are some Russian names that work well in [name_f]English[/name_f] or are international:
For a boy, maybe…
[name_m]Maxim[/name_m] (it’s been well-used in the UK for many years now, so it’s established in the anglosphere)
[name_f]Sasha[/name_f]
[name_m]Misha[/name_m]
[name_m]Anton[/name_m]
[name_m]Nikolay[/name_m] ‘Niko’
[name_f]Nikita[/name_f] ‘Niko’
[name_m]Nikodim[/name_m] ‘Niko’
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] / [name_m]Feliks[/name_m] (popular in Aus and while not commonly used in [name_f]Russia[/name_f], it is a legitimate name in Russian)
[name_m]Luca[/name_m] / [name_m]Luka[/name_m] (same as above)
[name_m]Alexei[/name_m] ‘Alex’ (or [name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] / Aleksey)
[name_m]Ilya[/name_m]
[name_m]Makar[/name_m] ‘Mak’
[name_m]Matvey[/name_m] ‘Matt’
And for a girl…
[name_f]Alisa[/name_f] (also familiar in English-speaking countries through Alyssa)
[name_f]Alina[/name_f]
[name_f]Galina[/name_f]
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] ‘Ana, Annie’
[name_f]Tatyana[/name_f] / [name_f]Tatiana[/name_f] ‘Tanya, Tati’
[name_f]Lidiya[/name_f] / [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] (whether you choose the Russian or [name_f]English[/name_f] spelling, it’s practically the same name in either language)
[name_f]Lida[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] ‘Anya’ (again, very international) or just [name_f]Anya[/name_f] on its own
[name_f]Nina[/name_f] (also quite international!)
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] ‘Katya’ or just [name_f]Katya[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoya[/name_f] ‘Zoe, Zo’
[name_f]Oksana[/name_f]
[name_f]Liliya[/name_f] / [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] ‘Lili, Lil’
You can’t go wrong with [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] which is perennially popular in Australia - nn [name_m]Sandy[/name_m], like the beaches. [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] for a girl. [name_m]Or[/name_m] Victor/Victoria, like the state. Perhaps you would consider [name_m]Cyril[/name_m] for a boy - sounds a bit like the Russian script but has an Australian feel.
