Billie 🌸 Retro power girl, boy name on a girl, or both?

I’ve been crushing on the name Billie lately but I’m not sure how it “reads” to the masses.

I like how she can fit with some of my spunky, retro favorites like Mavis, Dorothy, Nell, and Irene. I also totally understand how Billie could be more in line with the boys-names-on-girls group like Scottie, Hollis, Collins, and Lincoln. I have nothing against those names and they’re pretty popular where I’m originally from - they just have a very different vibe to me.

How do you view Billie? General thoughts? Do you just prefer Billy for a boy? Is it better as a nickname for Wilhelmina (which is a family name for me) or as a standalone?

Thank you in advance!! :woman_cartwheeling:t2:

I love the name Billie and, to me, it fits into both of those categories. It’s got a retro, Billie Holiday vibe and also falls into the currently popular boy-name-on-a-girl category. The latter isn’t usually something I adore either but because Billie has that vintage feel to it it feels different to, say, Collins, Scottie etc. It feels similar to Frankie to me, which is also simultaneously old-fashioned and in alignment with the current unisex trend. I generally like Billie on its own although I can also appreciate it as a nickname for Wilhelmina, which I really like.

Thank you!

This is kind of what I was hoping someone would say haha

Completely for me has the feel of vintage spunky retro jazz club, not modern unisex/boy name for girl.

I love [name_u]Billie[/name_u]! I get the retro and unisex vibes too, a mix of spunkiness, bounciness and a slight tomboyish touch that (as mentioned by PPs) has something more special than [name_u]James[/name_u] on a girl or similar. To me it’s a really versatile name, fitting in with modern unisex choices like [name_u]Frankie[/name_u], [name_u]Stevie[/name_u], [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] etc. and vintage/retro ones like you mentioned. [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] nn [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is adorable, but I love just [name_u]Billie[/name_u] on its own!

[name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Eilish[/name_f] 100%. Teasing potential.

WDYT of [name_u]Abilene[/name_u] “Billie”? I personally love this & think it goes great with your other names!

Do you think people would tease about Billie Eilish? I could see it but I guess I didn’t think of it.

I actually do really like Abilene! It has a bit more of a prim and proper feel than “just” Billie but I do really like it!

I fit [name_u]Billie[/name_u] in with other boy-ish nicknames on girls like [name_u]Frankie[/name_u], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_u]Romy[/name_u]. I definitely don’t think of it as a vintage name, although it definitely is and could fit in that category. I also don’t put it in the preppy category like [name_u]Hollis[/name_u] & [name_u]Lincoln[/name_u] either. It’s more modern/trendy feeling to me (weirdly, I know). I doubt there would be much teasing around the [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Eilish[/name_f] association, there’s so many female Billie’s, but I guess there could be.

Loove [name_u]Billie[/name_u] btw!

[name_u]Billie[/name_u] strikes me as a retro nickname! I can see it along side [name_f]Nell[/name_f] and [name_f]Mavis[/name_f]!

To me, [name_u]Billie[/name_u] seems to fit more in the second category: the boys-names-on-girls group. [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is nice as a nickname for [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] but also nice as a standalone.

I really like [name_u]Billie[/name_u] my brother is [name_u]Billy[/name_u] and I have the combination [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] [name_u]Billie[/name_u] on my list with [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] & [name_u]Billie[/name_u] honouring loved ones. Stylistically I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] fits into that jazzy vintage retro naming style [name_u]Billie[/name_u] feels similar to names like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] especially with the [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Holiday[/name_f] association. I also think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] fits into the category off boy for girls name so to me the name feels very universal so essentially I’m in agreement @TDFM. I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] can definitely be used and I wouldn’t see any teasing potential which I see as been mentioned. I would like [name_u]Billie[/name_u] teamed with a girly maybe boho middle name like [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] or [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Imogene[/name_f].

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] feels very different to [name_u]Billie[/name_u] she feels clunky vintage has a lot of grandeur and doesn’t feel fun like [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. I think even though [name_u]Billy[/name_u] is strongly connected to [name_m]William[/name_m] and is a natural nickname for [name_m]William[/name_m] I personally don’t automatically make the connection. I would nickname [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] [name_f]Mina[/name_f] or [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. It’s lovely that she’s a family name but I think you may loose [name_u]Billie[/name_u] if you use [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] so it depends stylistically what you would like.

I went to school with several [name_u]Billie[/name_u] girls. One was [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_u]Jo[/name_u], one was [name_f]Billi[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], and one was just [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. There was also a [name_f]Bobbi[/name_f] [name_u]Jo[/name_u]. To me, they are names straight out of the 80s and 90s, but that doesn’t make them bad. I prefer them as a nickname for a longer name, but they can work on their own too.

Definitely a retro power girl’s name for me! I love it! It makes me think of the iconic [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_m]King[/name_m] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Holliday[/name_f]! :two_hearts:

I really like [name_u]Billie[/name_u]! I think it is both retro and modern boyish! I went to school with a [name_u]Billie[/name_u] whose given name was actually [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I think it certainly works for [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] though, but also as a stand-alone.

My brother is also [name_u]Billy[/name_u], so the -ie ending reads as totally feminine to me, rather than unisex. It has a similar retro vibe to a name like [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] for me. I think it’s a fine nickname for [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], though it probably wouldn’t feel instintive to me.

I would not want to be named [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. I would love to be named [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] because it is lovely and I could then choose to be called [name_u]Billie[/name_u] or [name_f]Helma[/name_f] or [name_u]Min[/name_u] or [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] or [name_f]Mina[/name_f] or [name_f]Wilma[/name_f], etc. [name_u]Or[/name_u] just [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f].

[name_u]Billie[/name_u] is a female name and [name_u]Billy[/name_u] male and there’s nothing wrong with it. I would just want to give my daughter the choice. Some girls are Billies and some aren’t.

A fan of [name_u]Billie[/name_u] I think it reads more as a spunky retro style nickname for a girl and I would expect it to have a full name. I’ve never been a super fan of [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], I feel like any “Will” type name can give you [name_u]Billie[/name_u] so I’d probably opt more for [name_u]Willow[/name_u] or [name_f]Willa[/name_f] with nn [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. It’s the same way I feel about [name_u]Bobbie[/name_u] for a girl you could go with [name_u]Robin[/name_u] instead of [name_f]Roberta[/name_f] and I still think it makes sense.

I think [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u] would make a beautiful and unique girl’s name. You could use [name_u]Billie[/name_u] as her nickname.
