When posting about possible sisters for my daughter, [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], I’ve included [name_u]Billie[/name_u] in my list and generally found little love for it in comparison to other names I’ve proposed (like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f] etc.).
So I thought I’d do a post specifically on [name_u]Billie[/name_u] to get a sense of how people perceive it. For me it’s a vintage pick in the vein of other unisex nickname names like [name_u]Frankie[/name_u], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_f]Edie[/name_f] etc. I think of [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Holiday[/name_f] and of the first half of the 20th century - of wars and jazz and a world prior to modern technology.
In saying that, [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Eilish[/name_f] has imbued it with a modern edge that in a way detracts from its vintage charm (and she’s made it much more popular - it’s in the top 100 here) but either way, I think it’s a really cool, wearable name.
What does everyone think? Yay or nay? Does it work with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] or is it too different? It’s not one of my absolute top choices but I do think it’s a great name and it’s one I’d consider.
I love [name_u]Billie[/name_u] so much! It feels very much both ways you described it to me. It is pretty different stylistically from [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], but no reason you couldn’t still use it
Hmm to me [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is fine in theory. I don’t feel it’s stylistically a great fit with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] though. [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is soo whimsical and feminine and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] just feels a little rough and ready in comparison.
Then there’s the shared sounds with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]… They both end in ie so they kind of have this continuity, but then said next to each other they suddenly clash. Whereas the rest of the names you mentioned seem to complement [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] so well, in style and sound.
As a nickname [name_u]Billie[/name_u] could be great on the right kid (a [name_f]Willa[/name_f] or a [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] perhaps?) And would be fine with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. I can picture sisters with really different personalities “[name_u]Billie[/name_u] and [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]”, but then I only like the cadence when [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is said first. When saying “[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u]”, [name_u]Billie[/name_u] seems to get swallowed up in the sentence.
Those are my thoughts anyway! Nothing wrong with the name, and definitely useable. Perhaps better as a nickname?
I do really like [name_u]Billie[/name_u] on a girl!! I think for me personally it isn’t as much my style compared to your other names but it’s still lovely and vintage. I’ve heard it as a nn for [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] but I don’t really like that, in my accent they don’t really share many sounds. [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] are adorable together!
One right after the other those two names look strange because they both end in ie but have different pronunciations. I don’t think that’s a deal breaker, [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is still a sweet name, that spelling/pronunciation oddity was just the first thing I thought of
I don’t dislike [name_u]Billie[/name_u], but it just feels very masculine to me and it doesn’t have any nicknames to balance that out. It feels off next to the sweet and dainty [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and I feel like people might assume you had a daughter and a son instead of two daughters.
What about a longer name with the nickname [name_u]Billie[/name_u]? Something like [name_f]Briallen[/name_f] or [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] (since [name_u]Billy[/name_u] comes from [name_m]William[/name_m]). Or maybe something like [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] ‘[name_u]Billie[/name_u]’.
I do love [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. It’s sparky and sweet. I wouldn’t expect it as a sister to [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] but that’s not to say you shouldn’t use it if you love it
I do find it a bit too different to the rest of your style for my taste. Everyone else is very frilly, very obviously feminine. I would assume a girl if I saw the -ie spelling of [name_u]Billy[/name_u] but otherwise hearing it I would assume male.
I also find it a little informal next to the chic, buttoned up [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. I think I would suggest [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] nn [name_u]Billie[/name_u] to balance your style a little better.
I’m not sure if you’re in the UK (I’m in the US), but maybe the sibset would make more sense there-I know nickname names are more commonplace on the other side of the ocean
I have mixed emotions here. I like it when I think of [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Holiday[/name_f], but [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Eilish[/name_f] is Maybe I’m just not young & hip enough. Either way, I think it’s better as a nn. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] or [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] nn [name_u]Billie[/name_u]? Or [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]? Maybe even [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]?
I like [name_u]Billie[/name_u]! I think it’s sweet and spunky. I’m young enough that [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Eilish[/name_f] would definitely be my first association. Because of that, it seems less vintage chic and more cool and modern.
I think it works with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. They seem very different style-wise but the shared sounds make them match well, in my opinion. I also like the idea of using it as a nickname, but I don’t think there’s any reason not to use it as the full name if that’s what you prefer.
I love [name_u]Billie[/name_u], it’s very lively and fresh and I think it goes fine with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f].
In real life people won’t care/give a second thought to them being “stylistically different”, all that matters is that you like it.
I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is super sweet I quite like it with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] as well, they share some elements - like the -lie ending and they both have that vintage sort of nickname vibe for me! Both names fall under that sweet sounding category that seems to be trending upwards all over (a la [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_u]Paisley[/name_u], etc.) as well.
Also it’s a bit of a neat connection that both raised in popularity thanks to pop culture references - [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] thanks to the film from 2001 and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] thanks to [name_f]Eilish[/name_f].
LOVE [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. If you feel like she’s the one, then I say go for it! [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] are perfectly fine together
Also, since Billy is a nn for William for boys…maybe it could be a nn for Willow? Just a idea if you wanted a longer name
The only real negative I see is that one sister might be “jealous” of the other’s name. [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] isn’t unisex and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is. I think the pair would be much better if [name_u]Billie[/name_u] was the nn for a girls only name. They are totally cute together though!
I love [name_u]Billie[/name_u]! It’s quaint and cute with a long history of use that makes it feel classic. I think it fits in with a lot of other vintage nns that are popular nowadays, and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Eilish[/name_f] has definitely made it feel fresh and cool.
I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] and [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] together have a sort of eclectic vintage feel, it could definitely work.
