I like the thought of a gemstone or other precious material name for our daughter. Some names I love in this vein are:
[name_f]Amethyst[/name_f]
[name_f]Coral[/name_f]
[name_f]Emerald[/name_f]
[name_f]Amethyst[/name_f] is the birthstone for [name_f]February[/name_f] and [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] is the birthstone for [name_f]May[/name_f], neither of which our baby will be born in. The birthstone for her month is [name_f]Topaz[/name_f], which, while I like the word, I feel might be going a bit too far out of our comfort zone!
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s weird to name a child after a birthstone which doesn’t correspond to their birth month?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like the name [name_f]Coral[/name_f], which doesn’t come with this baggage? (Her middle name will begin with a C, which I thought could lead to cute nicknames of [name_f]CeCe[/name_f] or [name_f]CoCo[/name_f])
I think it’s fine to name a baby a gemstone name even if it isn’t the one from their birth month. (I have a cousin named [name_f]April[/name_f], her birthday in [name_u]January[/name_u].)
[name_f]Amethyst[/name_f] has always been a guilty pleasure of mine!
Nope, I don’t think its weird at all! I have a friend named [name_f]Amethyst[/name_f] (born in [name_u]December[/name_u]), and I know several other gemstone/precious material-named girls that weren’t born in the month of their gem-name.
As for [name_f]Coral[/name_f], I personally prefer [name_f]Cora[/name_f], but it’s still cute.
I don’t think it’s odd. [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is the birthstone of [name_u]July[/name_u], and I’m sure plenty of women and girls with that name weren’t born in [name_u]July[/name_u]. Ditto for [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], which is the birthstone for [name_u]June[/name_u].
I really like the sound and associations of [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and the beautiful stone itself; to me the fact that it’s a birthstone is entirely incidental.
I really like [name_f]Amethyst[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Coral[/name_f] but prefer the [name_m]French[/name_m] variant [name_f]Coralie[/name_f].
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Coral[/name_f] with nickname [name_f]CoCo[/name_f]. We were considering it for our baby girl, but it’s a bit of a mouthful with our last name unfortunately…
It’s totally not weird! I love [name_f]Coral[/name_f] and [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] ([name_f]CoCo[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] are such cute nicknames for little girls!).
[name_f]Amethyst[/name_f] isn’t as much my style, but I do like the thought of it, especially as a middle name.
I wouldn’t even think about it. I don’t really remember my own birthstone (it always seems to be different) let alone all the others. I don’t even think it’s that weird when people have month names aren’t born in that month or are for that matter. So I definitely don’t think birthstones are a problem.
Most people probably don’t even know what birthstone is for what month (other than their own). There are definitely babies named [name_f]April[/name_f] that are born in other months, and babies named [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] that aren’t born at Christmastime, so I don’t think this would be weird at all.
I think it’s honestly fine. One of the reasons I’ve been liking [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] and [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] (as a mn) right now are because it’s my brother’s birthstone. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have close loved ones born in [name_f]February[/name_f] or [name_f]May[/name_f]? I’m not a huge [name_f]Coral[/name_f] fan, honestly, although I do like [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]. I think something like [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] is really beautiful and wouldn’t necessarily carry the baggage of birthstones, either. Or even [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] [name_f]Topaz[/name_f], if you’re feeling brave. I actually love the idea of [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] [name_f]Topaz[/name_f]! If [name_u]Paz[/name_u] is used, and other birthstones, I think [name_f]Topaz[/name_f] could be a brave name, but still usable and very cool. Good luck!
I don’t think it matters. I honestly think it’s more creative to name your daughter after a gem that doesn’t correspond with the month they were born. I love gem names right now, so cute! Some of my favourite gem names you may not (or may) have thought of…
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] (Or [name_u]Garnett[/name_u]… My FAVOURITE!)
[name_f]Lapis[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
Citrine (an orange quarts…)
I don’t think it’s weird. Birthstones aren’t that well known and definitely aren’t obvious like the month name itself - and I’ll probably be using [name_u]June[/name_u] for a future daughter no matter when she’s born! I also have [name_f]Coral[/name_f] on my list, as well as [name_f]Jade[/name_f] & [name_f]Opal[/name_f]. [name_u]Love[/name_u] your choices!
I am one of those people that really like the name to have symbolism or significance - I would totally name a [name_u]July[/name_u] baby “[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]” or a [name_f]May[/name_f] baby “[name_f]Emerald[/name_f]” - but no, I don’t think it’s weird at all to deviate from that pattern. [name_f]Precious[/name_f] stones are associated with many more things than just being birthstones, and most people wouldn’t even think of it.
As for [name_f]Topaz[/name_f], I think it’s an awesome name! You should use it! Nicknamed [name_u]Toby[/name_u]? Or [name_u]Paz[/name_u]? [name_u]Paz[/name_u] means “peace” in a few different languages, which is sweet. If there are any less out-there names you prefer, I’d totally use [name_f]Topaz[/name_f] as a middle name.
[name_f]Coral[/name_f] is a great name. [name_f]Cece[/name_f] or [name_f]Coco[/name_f] would be cute nicknames. You really have a lot of good options here! Good taste!
I don’t think it matters at all. I know a [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] who was born in [name_u]December[/name_u] and a [name_f]Diamond[/name_f] who was born in [name_u]August[/name_u]. I also know an [name_f]April[/name_f] who was born in [name_f]February[/name_f] and a [name_f]Summer[/name_f] who was born in spring. No one cares or has ever even brought it up. I didn’t think about it myself until I saw this post. I think you should just use whatever you want regardless of when she’s born.
