One of my all time favourite films is [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] in [name_f]Pink[/name_f]. I’ve loved it since I was a little kid as it was one of my mum’s favourites when she was a teenager and she used to play it for me a lot when I was growing up so she’d have someone to watch it with (which is the smartest plan I’ve ever heard!).
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m] McCarthy’s character in [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] in [name_f]Pink[/name_f] is named [name_u]Blane[/name_u], which according to my mum, was super unique for someone supposed to be born in 1968, but also for someone watching a film in 1986. Because the name was unique at the time, there’s a line in the film about his name - “[name_u]Blane[/name_u]? His name is Blane?! That’s a major appliance! That’s not a name!”
However, the name has kind of grown on me and I’m loving that most of my list seems to have an 80s pop culture connection (Stephanie - Full House, [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] - Back to the [name_u]Future[/name_u], [name_u]Julie[/name_u] - [name_f]Valley[/name_f] [name_f]Girl[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] - [name_f]Ally[/name_f] Sheedy, [name_m]Kevin[/name_m] - St Elmo’s [name_u]Fire[/name_u], [name_u]Michael[/name_u] - [name_u]Michael[/name_u] J. [name_u]Fox[/name_u], [name_m]Mark[/name_m] - [name_m]Mark[/name_m] Harmon), and [name_u]Blane[/name_u] would be a really cool one to add to my list, especially since I can’t use [name_f]Molly[/name_f] Ringwald’s character’s name (I also can’t use [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] after the actor himself).
What are your thoughts on the name [name_u]Blane[/name_u]? Is it a usable choice, or is Duckie right?
It’s not known to me as an appliance name! I like it, it reminds me of [name_u]Blaise[/name_u] and [name_u]Blake[/name_u]. The meaning is lovely. (I’ve never seen [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] in Pink!)
i don’t think blane is unusable! my only association is blaine from glee which isn’t a bad association imo, and isn’t even the same spelling of the name
I really like [name_u]Blane[/name_u]! Knew a boy in elementary school (so, a long time ago) with it, and it suited him. Actually, I think it was spelled [name_u]Blaine[/name_u], though. I might slighter prefer that to [name_u]Blane[/name_u].
I’ve known a [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] in real life, plus I associate it a lot with Glee, and I’ve also seen [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] in [name_f]Pink[/name_f] enough times to picture this scene in my head. I think [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] is interesting because older people may remember the [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] in [name_f]Pink[/name_f] reference and younger people will have the Glee reference, so it won’t be an unheard of name for almost anyone. But it’s still unique and used too often.
I kind of like [name_u]Blane[/name_u] - there was a show I watched as a kid called MI High which was about spy kids and one of the main characters was called [name_u]Blane[/name_u], so I always associate it with that and it’s always been a name on my radar. It’s closeness to [name_u]Blake[/name_u] makes it feel familiar too so I think it’s usable!!
Blane is great! To me it’s associated with Glee exclusively, but it’s the name of one of the least problematic characters on that show! go for it if you love it!
[name_u]Blane[/name_u] is nice and I don’t think of an appliance. [name_f]My[/name_f] first association is a pretentious character so it feels a bit illogically preppy to me, but this spelling makes me think of the down to earth [name_u]Blake[/name_u].
(This is also rich coming from a character who goes by “Duckie.” )
