Blog articles you would like to see...

I’d love to see:
Name trends of Nameberry babies - what do berries call their babies?
[name_u]Brit[/name_u] berries vs USA berries- are our styles different?
Boys names to come back from the girls. Names that used to to male but aren’t popular/used female names in this generation- e.g. [name_f]Shirley[/name_f]

What would you like to hear about?

These may have been done already but:

  • word names
  • names from classic literature
  • Popular names on nameberry vs. Popular names in ‘real life’

I would love to read something thoughtful, informative, and new. Blog posts over the past year or so (probably longer) have been of an embarrassingly poor quality. The same topics are rehashed again and again (and not very well), no new conclusions are ever reached, and I’ve even noticed name lists copied and pasted from old posts being presented as new information in recent posts. We only ever hear about names in the US and the UK on this site. There are 194 other countries in this world. I want to hear about their naming customs and trends. Sadly, no one seems willing to put in the time to research this information or contact someone who could provide it. Then again, I do get the impression that Nameberry’s blog posts are meant to be clickbait rather than points of intellectual discussion, which is unfortunate. There are so many clever, educated people on this site who love names, and the blog could be so much more than it is. But oh well, I suppose.

I’d enjoy some more articles on naming traditions in different cultures, not necessarily directly about names but about the act of naming.

Great topic. I would love to see one about the names of Latino-Americans vs. Latinos in Central [name_u]America[/name_u]. I say this b/c I teach many Latino students and have noticed huge changes in the kinds of names used in the last 27 years (how long I’ve taught).

I love name blogs with a literary or artistic angle and those related to trees, plants, etc. Particularly when a photo of the plant or tree accompanies the text. I actually think nameberry should do this for every tree, gem, plant, place, etc. People who love names but aren’t into plants or gardening might enjoy seeing what edelweiss or tansy or begonias or freesias or dianthas look like.

Agree with this. TBH I’m tired of reading about “12 Vintage Girls Names You Should Consider (stay tuned for boys in a couple days)”. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the idea of names and naming traditions from other countries!

You’ve summed up my thoughts exactly. I have also noticed the copy-and-pasting of old lists into new posts, and seen so many of the same names pop up in almost every article. I agree that it would be nice to see naming customs from a wider range of countries, instead of the UK and US over and over again.

•names from other countries/Cultures- I would love to see more names from like [name_f]Asia[/name_f]/Latin [name_u]America[/name_u]/ Arabic/Polynesian
•more themed lists (gems/nature/flowers/futuristic/romantic)
•popular names from each decade
•more names outside the top 1000
•less celebrity baby names

Bumping this up out of interest…

Is there anything else you’d particularly like to see on the blog?

Anything you think is especially overdone?

The flower name posts are overdone. The same handful rehashed over and over again with maybe one or two new ones thrown in. I’d like to see more positive posts regarding traditionally masculine name such as [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Shirley[/name_f], [name_u]Madison[/name_u] etc. And more discussion-based posts concerning foreign naming practices and popular choices from other countries - respectful in nature, mind you. There was an old post: “The Irish Names of [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u]”, and the poster pretty much stated that the traditionally masculine Enda and Iarla weren’t suitable options for boys. As an Irish individual, I found that incredibly offensive.

Completely agree with @southern.maple.

Also would love to see more guest bloggers (maybe even NB users?). Less focus on celebrity baby names. There’s quite a few Canadian berries, maybe more about naming trends in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and not just the US and UK?

I agree with everyone else about wanting to read accurate and well-researched blog posts about names from other cultures. Everything seems so focused on the USA and [name_m]Britain[/name_m]. I’d love to find out about name trends in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] or what’s popular in Japan, for example.

I’d also like to see more blog posts about how to choose middle names, with discussion on flow, sounds, syllable numbers, etc.

I’d love to see an article (or series of articles) on African American inspired names, the tradition of choosing Hebrew names for a baby, and different culture’s naming traditions (i.e., Judaism using only a letter, Italians naming after grandmothers, etc.)

And the story behind the name. I think those are so fascinating!

I second everything that’s been said, especially @southern.maple’s post. I’d really love to read about the middles and how to best pick them, and themed names.
