Hello everyone. So it has been a long while since I’ve visited the forums here. When deciding on the name for our second son, due February 28, we went into it fully aware that [name_m]Jack[/name_m] (and more-so [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]), is very popular right now. My husband and I couldn’t agree on a name, he liked [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] and at first I did too, but I don’t feel it works with our last name. He then suggested [name_m]Jack[/name_m], and I started to fall in love with it, despite the popularity factor. We decided that was THE name, and have told pretty much everyone. My grandmother even embroidered his name on the baby quilt she made him. Now I come back and read this blog post about names you hear WAAAAAAAAYYYYYY too often, and [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is pretty much top of the list from everyone in the comments. It makes me feel kind of sad that people will think “Oh great, another [name_m]Jack[/name_m]” the way I used to think “Oh great, another [name_u]Aiden[/name_u].”
I’m probably just being hormonal, sorry for the vent but thank you for listening!
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] is a name I do hear a lot, but one I never tire of. [name_m]Jack[/name_m] will never stop being a great name (which is why it’s so popular!).
If a friend of mine announced they were naming their baby [name_m]Jack[/name_m] I’d be more likely to think “great I love that name!” than “oh no, not another one”.
I wouldn’t use the name myself, not because of the popularity but because I favour longer names personally, but I have no problem with others using it. If you love [name_m]Jack[/name_m], go for it! You already have support from others by the sounds of things (your grandmother using the name on his quilt).
Thank you - I guess I’m just kind of having a pity party because I will not change his name (I love it, too - He’s already my little [name_u]Jackie[/name_u]) but I don’t want people eye-rolling at the sound of it. I appreciate your kind response.
Unlike [name_u]Aiden[/name_u], which is really just a trend [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]/[name_m]Jack[/name_m] has always been a popular name, and it’s wonderful! There’s lots of nickname possibilities and He can be little [name_m]Jax[/name_m] and a kid, [name_m]Jack[/name_m] as a teen, and [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] as an adult. [name_m]Jack[/name_m] never goes out of style! [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is a wonderful name and you shouldn’t doubt yourself! If you are worried about the popularity, pair it with an unusual middle name so if he decides he doesn’t want to be another [name_m]Jack[/name_m], he has something to fall back on.
I think you need to go with the name you love and don’t worry about outside factors, there are good points and bad points about every name and people can pick a name they think is unusual and it suddenly becomes popular anyway!
We live in the uk and loved [name_m]Jack[/name_m] but it has always been so popular here we intentionally picked [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] for our now 5 year old not realising how popular it is in the us! But it suits him perfectly. I feel if you don’t go wih the name you love you will always regret it. And popular names are popular for a reason, [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is a sweet strong name that suits all ages so don’t change your mind because of a blog post
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] has had steady popularity since records have been kept, never under #175.
However, going by pure numbers, I’d say it’s less popular now than it’s been in a long while.
I have heard of a few, and I can’t say I’d be over the moon excited to meet a [name_m]Jack[/name_m], but it sounds like it’s the perfect name for you!
It’s a lovely wonderful name!
Stick with your gut!
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] always has been and always will be a good solid name! It is a name that fits in all ages and occupations. it is the name used for movie and book characters. But most importantly, you have really connected to that name. I have actually only met a few [name_m]Jack[/name_m]'s.
I only know one little guy named [name_m]Jack[/name_m]. He is the sweetest kid, and that is how I picture little boys named [name_m]Jack[/name_m] – sweethearts. It ages beautifully, too.
It’s a great, classic name.
The difference between a name like [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and a name like [name_u]Jayden[/name_u]/[name_u]Aiden[/name_u] is that it is not trendy; it is a classic. I don’t think I will ever tire of [name_m]Jack[/name_m]. Great choice!
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m] is absolutely beautiful. Yes, I hear it pretty often, but that’s because I live in an area where people seem to have good naming taste.
To cheer you up, I have made this list of positive attributes about [name_m]Jack[/name_m]:
It’s classic, and therefore classy.
It ages well.
It’s easy to say.
It goes great with lots of last names.
Nobody will ever spell it wrong. (Except maybe at Starbucks. They manage to spell everything wrong.)
He could be an artist, or a soccer player, or a teacher… or all three!
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] just sounds like somebody you’d want to be friends with.
He already has a quilt with his name on it.
More importantly, his loving parents, who have put so much thought into his name, adore the name. I’m sure once you see him it will be perfectly him!
(I’m pregnant, too, so I get the hormone challenges!)
I know a few Jacks, but they are all my age (in there teens). I do know quite a few young Jacksons. If you said you were thinking of [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], I would tell you I hear it all the time, because I do. But I don’t know many young Jacks. And [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is one of those names that you never get tired of, unlike [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] or [name_u]Aiden[/name_u]. It is classic, sweet, and verisitile. I have it on my GP list, I can’t use it for family reasons, and get really excited when I see on the forum people naming their kid [name_m]Jack[/name_m], because I think it is so adorable.
There are some names that I’m really tired of, but [name_m]Jack[/name_m] isn’t one of them.
Again, thank you all so much! You have really cheered me up and helped me come to terms with our name choice!!
@nameweary - Thanks for the list, LOL, you’re awesome!
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband just last night was talking about all the “cool” people named [name_m]Jack[/name_m]… [name_m]Jack[/name_m] White, [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Kerouac[/name_m], [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f], [name_m]Jack[/name_m] Skellington (lol, yes he put [name_m]Jack[/name_m] Skellington on the list.)
Have you considered putting [name_m]John[/name_m] on the birth certificate? [name_m]Even[/name_m] if he goes by [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m] is positively unusual and fresh on a little boys nowadays, and that gives him alternatives if he wants to go by a more uncommon name (most historical Jacks were Johns, too).
And unlike [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m] won’t become dated.
