Bo, Mabel, Barnaby and...?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Nameberry!

[name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t been active on the site for about 17 months but have been browsing broodily for about the past 5. I’m not yet TTC, but the waiting game in more financial than emotional. Me and DH are both keen for a (final) child, but we’re waiting until I can afford to take a long maternity leave. I’m the top earner so its proving a frustrating wait.

In the meantime, It’s nice to indulge in a bit of brainstorming (namestorming?)
We have boys names we both love, but so far only one girls name we both agree on, which is [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]/[name_f]Liv[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] but DH isn’t keen; we aren’t really religious and he feels it gives off the opposite impression.
My other loves of the moment are [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] and [name_f]Alberta[/name_f]/[name_f]Alba[/name_f].
I’m looking for something eye-catching, something with a story or meaning behind it, or something with a little weight. I also love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], but- like a lot of people- feel the HP associations are just too strong.
DH’s favourite is [name_f]Clara[/name_f], which I like, but it just doesn’t have enough spunk/ doesn’t feel striking enough.

I’d love to hear suggestions- preferably not beginning with M. My sons are [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] and a [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] who is predominantly called [name_m]Bo[/name_m], so B&B and M&M would be a little matchy for me.
Also am not a fan of [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] or [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] (too similar in style to [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and too too linked to Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u]). Otherwise any suggestions are a-go!

Looking forward to hearing from any of you

[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Drusilla[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Dru[/name_u])
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucretia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_f]Portia[/name_f]

I do actually like [name_f]Drusilla[/name_f]! [name_f]Dulcie[/name_f] is a name we sporadically toy with, and they have something of the same feel. I seem to have a quite antipathy to D names, but these two intrigue me.
I’ve also never considered [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]- I love ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ though! Am going to look into the history of the name a bit (hitting up the name blogs) but this got me excited.

Not a fan of [name_f]Flora[/name_f] or [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] or [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]…I knew a nasty [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] and the former two are a little frilly for me I think. I like clunky-frilly but not pretty-frilly. Haha
Thanks for the list, stephanie

The first thing that popped in my mind with your children’s names was [name_f]Freya[/name_f].

If you like [name_f]Drusilla[/name_f] & toy with the idea of [name_f]Dulcie[/name_f], what do you think of [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f]?

From your list, I like [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Liv[/name_f]. I also like your husband’s choice of [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. Maybe if you found something striking for one of the middle names it would add a little spunk to it.

Haha that’s hilarious. [name_f]Freya[/name_f] is actually one of my favourite names! But- and it’s a big but- it’s a top twenty name in the UK and I just don’t want a daughter who is one of five Freyas in a class.
I’d put it as a high contender for a middle name though- but only if I find a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] name that I love profoundly more. Otherwise I would feel strange preferring the middle moniker to the first!

[name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f] I haven’t heard before. I like its origin: ‘[name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f] was the name created by Cervantes’s [name_m]Don[/name_m] [name_m]Quixote[/name_m] for his idealized lady.’
Is it Dul-sin-ee-ah? or Dul-chin-ee-ah?

[name_f]Love[/name_f] your children’s names! My brother is a [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] too
If he loves [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], WDYT of [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] or [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]?
Other names I think would go well:
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Gretel[/name_f]
Best of luck!

I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Dulcie[/name_f]!
My first thoughts were
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
Also love [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] (liv)…Or perhaps
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] ([name_f]Gin[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginger[/name_f]…love [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] & [name_f]Ginger[/name_f]!)
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] ([name_f]Zuzu[/name_f])
[name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] ([name_u]Rue[/name_u]/[name_u]True[/name_u]/[name_f]Trudy[/name_f])
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] ([name_u]Rue[/name_u]/Roo)
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] ([name_f]Winnie[/name_f])
[name_f]Lettice[/name_f] ([name_f]Lettie[/name_f])
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]/[name_f]Ottoline[/name_f] ([name_f]Tilly[/name_f]/[name_f]Lottie[/name_f])
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] ([name_f]Gin[/name_f]/[name_f]Winnie[/name_f])
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] ([name_f]Gwen[/name_f]/[name_f]Winnie[/name_f])
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (posey)

Thanks for the responses.
I like [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f] but can’t picture saying it on a daily basis 1000X- [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] kind of smooches into three syllables, whilst [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f] remains a resolute four. Plus it has…just too many vowels in the mix?! trying to place what doesn’t quite feel perfect!

[name_u]Jem[/name_u]- [name_m]How[/name_m] interesting. What are you/your other siblings called, out of interest? Of your names I like [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and [name_f]Helena[/name_f] for middle names, but both are a little common for me to use as a first (although I have been tempted to use [name_f]Helena[/name_f] regardless).
I love [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] but it just isn’t for me. My sister is a [name_f]Philippa[/name_f], so that’s only on our honour list I’m afraid.

fluzie- Oh I love many of these. My partner hates [name_f]Olive[/name_f] (boo) but we both have long time love for [name_f]Ruth[/name_f].
[name_f]Dulcie[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] gives me (the good kind of) shivers.
I wish I could get behind [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]…[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] I can get behind on someone else’s child.
I like [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] but it sounds slightly mad with my surname!

I think [name_f]Dulcie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] remain the frontrunners.
We (or I) still have a huge list of honour names: [name_f]Joan[/name_f], [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] (or a variation) and [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] (or a variation), [name_f]Cara[/name_f] (or a variation).

Still would love suggestions- maybe a few really offbeat ones.
To give an idea: I love [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] for a middle name.
I’d like to toy with some fresh/unexpected choices. Any ideas happily received!

I love your suggestion of [name_f]Alberta[/name_f]. I think it really suits the sibset and is strong and spunky. [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] as a girls nn is very sweet.
I like [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] but prefer [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] or [name_f]Lilac[/name_f].
If you like [name_f]Freya[/name_f] maybe [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] or [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]? Too usual? Fearn?
Also coming to mind;
[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]
[name_f]Magdelene[/name_f]
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Hester[/name_f]
[name_f]Bathsheba[/name_f]
[name_m]Regen[/name_m]
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f]

Since we have totally opposite taste…this is hard, but you might like [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Sophronia[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], Zilzanetta (yes, it’s real…I’ve got an ancestor…), Eudokia, Ermengarde, [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f] or [name_f]Maude[/name_f].

[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Alba[/name_f]/[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]

Also: [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f]

I really love [name_f]Willa[/name_f].
Have been concerned when coasting this site that it has become very trendy- thoughts?
Is it just a Nameberry popularity spike, or one which is reflected in actual births?

[name_f]Alice[/name_f]/[name_f]Alys[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f]
[name_f]Althea[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
[name_f]Johanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Philomena[/name_f]
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sidony[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Willa[/name_f]! It has risen a bit lately:

willa – Nancy's Baby Names (number born in the U.S.)

Baby Names in England & Wales (number born in the U.K.)

It’s ranked #719 in the U.S. and isn’t even in the top 1000 in the U.K, so it isn’t too trendy. Though it’s risen, I think it’s more Nameberry-trendy than actually trendy.

Other suggestions:

[name_f]Julitta[/name_f]
[name_f]Alba[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Persis[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
[name_f]Delphi[/name_f]
[name_f]Iolia[/name_f]
[name_f]Zipporah[/name_f]
[name_f]Nella[/name_f]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Romilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Oriel[/name_f]

I’m also really loving [name_f]Dulcia[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f].
