I love the name [name_m]Bode[/name_m] ([name_m]Bow[/name_m]-dee) but worry that people will mispronounce it. I am not a fan of alternative spellings. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering what berries think of this one. [name_f]TIA[/name_f]
I love the sound but it probably would get mispronounced. I think that could be corrected, it might just be a little annoying
I really like it. I have heard it pronounced like code, so people would likely ask, which I don’t think should be a big deal. They want to say it as intended so once they know I don’t think there would be an issue but it depends if you are okay with that.
I would have mispronounced it if you didn’t give the pronunciation in the description.
But I think in cases like this it comes down to if you care about having to correct people frequently or not. With this name you will have to pronounce and/or spell it out for new people all the time. But would that bother you enough to not use it?
[name_m]Even[/name_m] the “simplest” of names can be pronounced differently. For example both [name_f]Lara[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] can be pronounced the way [name_f]Lara[/name_f] Croft does. On the flip side, they can both also be pronounced the way [name_f]Laura[/name_f] Ingels has hers pronounced. It doesn’t stop people from naming their daughters [name_f]Lara[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f]. You just let people know how it is meant to be pronounced. I’d say 99% of the time people won’t need to be reminded more than once or twice.
Anglophones are highly likely to mispronounce it. While I knew when I saw the title of this post that this must be an alternative spelling of [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], my brain still initially read it like bode like the forecasting verb as in, “this does not bode well.”
I would caution against it because while every name has the risk of people mispronouncing it sometimes, this one will undoubtedly be mispronounced a lot, possible more often than it’s pronounced right. There are similar names out there that skirt that issue though, like [name_m]Boden[/name_m] and you could totally still call him [name_m]Bode[/name_m].
I agree it will probably be mispronounced.
What about spelling it [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]?
If you don’t mind correcting people each time, I think it works. Personally, that would get too annoying for me, but that’s for you to decide. It has a lovely sound!
I like this spelling of “[name_u]BO[/name_u]-dee” best too and it’s already familiar to many with this pronunciation because of skier [name_m]Bode[/name_m] [name_m]Miller[/name_m], so I don’t think it’s totally unusable. However, I do think you’d get people rhyming it with “ode” 99% of the time on first reading. That would drive me mad and would probably be a dealbreaker for me, but you may have more patience. Unfortunately, there’s no way of telling how he’d feel about it!
I feel like [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] is actually the original, possibly more “correct” spelling and that [name_m]Bode[/name_m] is the alternative spelling. Maybe I’m giving people too much credit, but I think most people would figure out the correct pronunciation, just because it is hard to imagine someone being named “bode.”
I would pronounce it [name_m]Bode[/name_m] with silent “e” rhyming with code It is the way we are taught in Australia. I have seen [name_m]Bodie[/name_m] which is easy to spell and pronounce.
My 3yr old is [name_m]Bode[/name_m] and we [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] his name!!! We constantly get positive comments about it and it fits him. He’s a cool kid with confidence and a lot of personality. People rarely pronounce it wrong. We also call him [name_u]Bo[/name_u] for short.
I don’t like the comments about his name on this site because it’s a great name and growing in popularity.
His full name is [name_m]Bode[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m].
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the name but would mispronunce it unfortunately. Coming from someone who has there name said incorrectly a lot I’d rather use the spelling [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] to avoid it and I think it looks nicer.
I think it sounds nice but I definitely thought “bode rhyming with code” at first. As others of said the likelihood of frequent mispronunciations would be a dealbreaker for me, but really only you and your partner can decide if that matters as much to you. I also personally prefer the spelling [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] because I think it’s kinda cute and spunky looking and more easy to pronounce, but I think [name_m]Bodie[/name_m] could be an alternative closer to [name_m]Bode[/name_m] if you decide the pronunciation issues are a problem for you. Either way, cute name and [name_u]Bo[/name_u] is an adorable nickname!
Cute name, but keep in mind that many of todays elementary kids are either, Bhodi, [name_m]Brody[/name_m], [name_u]Brady[/name_u], [name_m]Bowie[/name_m], [name_m]Boden[/name_m], [name_u]Brayden[/name_u] etc…my theory is though if you adore it use it. Maybe have a unique middle: [name_m]Wilder[/name_m], Hawke, [name_m]Jareth[/name_m] etc…
My husband’s family calls him Bodey as a nickname, and I briefly thought about using it for our baby, but I would 100% have to spell it someway that people would for sure pronounce the ee sound at the end, I would go crazy correcting away from ‘bode’ all the time.
