My husband and I are expecting our first child. It’s a boy! I have had a list of baby boy names going since I was 14 and two years ago my husband read it and loved the name “[name]Landon[/name].” We have been referring to our unborn child since than as [name]Landon[/name] and we are in love with the name. I can’t find another that I love as much.
The problem is our last name is Baum which is pronounced like “bomb.” We’re nervous that he’ll be teased because his name would sound like “land on bomb” or “landing bomb.”
Should I keep the name I love and risk it? Or is this just too cruel?
It seems like kind of a stretch to me. I think [name]Landon[/name] Baum sounds just fine!
It probably won’t be an issue as:
- [name]Landon[/name] is pronounced [name]Land[/name]-en
- Baum is pronounced B-ow-m not b-aw-m
I never would have thought of [name]Land[/name] on Bomb.
I think she knows how to pronounce her own last name O_o The OP said it was pronounced ‘bomb’.
Sorry OP. I totally hear ‘land on bomb’ when I say it
[name]Landon[/name] Baum doesn’t sound bad to me at all. I wouldn’t pronounce [name]Landon[/name] as [name]Land[/name] on, its more like [name]Land[/name]-en or [name]Land[/name]-in. I know you say Baum is pronounced like “bomb” but is it really that blunt? I would have said “boh-m”. “Lan-din Boh-m” is handsome. I wouldn’t let it worry you. But if “[name]Land[/name] on bomb” is really the pronunciation, use [name]Landon[/name] as the middle name and choose another first name.
It makes me think of Lindenbaum (like Schubert’s lieder song.) Not a bad association at all. I think “land on bomb” is a stretch. Besides, what does it mean? You can land ON a land-mine, but not on a bomb.
I don’t think that “landing bomb” is necessarily a bad thing - it could also be used in a “he’s the bomb” sort of way.
Though very unfortunate should you have a heavier child.
I don’t hear it when I pronounce the name but I would pronounce your last name B-oww-M (as it is german for tree).
However, if you think that where you live people would think [name]Land[/name] on Bomb I’d consider using it as a mn or choosing a similar name instead.
Suggestions:
[name]Logan[/name]
[name]Langdon[/name]
[name]Loudon[/name] (Loud Bomb?)
[name]Linden[/name]
[name]Loren[/name]
Langsten
[name]Lennon[/name]
[name]Leon[/name]
I do hear ‘Landing bomb’ when I say the name - I don’t know whether it’s accent differences in how [name]Landon[/name] is said, I say it more as [name]Land[/name]-un (a very short final vowel syllable, close to how I say [name]London[/name]) which to me sounds pretty close to the way I say ‘landing’. And if you pronounce Baum like bomb, then I’d say it’s a bit too close. If you pronounced your surname Bowm I’d say you could have got away with it, but Bomb I wouldn’t do it.
I agree with renrose. I have never liked [name]Landon[/name] because it sounds like landing or land on.
Id be more concerned with [name]Landon[/name] being similar to [name]London[/name]. lol [name]London[/name] Bomb.
