Bonnie or Josephine?

Thank you to everyone who helped me out a few weeks back - I thought we were cutting it fine at 36w to still be deciding on names, but here we are at 39 weeks

We love feminine, classic, slightly old fashioned but familiar names. Already have twin girls Marion and Camilla (but not overly fussed about sibset vibe, no one compares my name to my siblings now as an adult!)

Bonnie Clementine
Or
Josephine ? (Nn Posey or Josie)

Surname starts with a B and is 2 silybles ending in N. I’m cool with the alliteration.

You may recall I was worried Bonnie was too little girlish and couldn’t imagine it on a professional CV and don’t want to limit her potential. Josephine solves that problem, but could be a bit stuffy? Posey is an adorable nickname, feels in line with Bonnie.

If it’s a boy I think we’ve settled on Bram.

Can you tell I’m sitting at home waiting for a baby with too much time on my hands to think about names?!!!

Welcoming any views!

I love [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] but don’t see myself using it as it feels a bit nicknamey. I love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] too especially with nicknames [name_u]Josie[/name_u] or [name_f]Posy[/name_f]. I don’t think you can go wrong with either option, but my preference, especially with the older girls, is [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]. It makes me so happy. The long I sound in [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] is so bright and I think it could lighten [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] up a bit. Maybe [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] or [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]? [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Clover[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] are also coming to mind.

It you want [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] but are worried about a professional name for her future, what about [name_f]Bonita[/name_f], nn [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f], otherwise both names are lovely.

I can see why you’re struggling, both are beautiful names. Would you be open to [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] or [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]? I especially love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :cherry_blossom:

I think [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is more versatile than [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f], unless you were to expand [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] to [name_f]Bonita[/name_f] or something along those lines. It has nickname potential, is well-established, and an absolute classic. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] definitely isn’t stuffy at all! Honestly both [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] go well with your current set so even though you aren’t bothered with sibset cohesiveness, they do sound great!

Are you looking for MN ideas for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]?

I much prefer [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] to [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

Also, she will likely be nnamed [name_u]Jo[/name_u] or [name_u]Josie[/name_u] b/c many of us have our names shortened by friends.

I really love [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]! Normally I’m not a huge fan of [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], but it does go really well with your other daughters and the nickname posey is lovely! You can’t go wrong either way, but my vote would be [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f].

Thank you for the considered reply! Yes, [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] does seem more versitile - I’d say that’s why I’m drawn to it. While [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] pulls at my heart strings that little bit more. I’m just struggling to picture the next female prime minister of Australia as a [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] lol!!! The things that go through our heads.

Would love ideas for a middle name for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] feels a bit of a mouthful with our surname.

Thanks again!

You’re right - [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] does have such a happy feel to it! Perhaps that’s part of my hesitation, too off with the fairies or even too “Wild West”? Not sophisticated lady rocking a kick arse career?

I bet you after all this name indecisiveness it will be a little baby boy haha!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I have to be honest, I agree…

I do like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] with [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] and [name_u]Marion[/name_u] but it sounds like [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] makes you happier. I think a [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] can be anything she wants to be! [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] is a sweet combo - I don’t think it’s too sweet though or [name_u]Wild[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u].

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] for me! I adore [name_f]Posey[/name_f], and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] works so well with [name_u]Marion[/name_u] and [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] for me.

Good luck!

[name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is nice too, and if she decides [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] isn’t “grown up enough” her resume can always be B. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] “Braisin”.

As an adult who happens to be named [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f], I don’t advise it. I go by a variation of my middle name since I loathe being called “Bon” or “Bon-Bon” and if I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard “where’s Clyde?”… I would also say it’s a rare, weird name that seems inseparable from the association to little old ladies while also sounding perpetually childish. And I don’t know about you, but I’ve met a fair amount of people who had a dog or farm animal named [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]! I don’t find [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] too unprofessional though, that kind of names are popular anyway so she won’t be the only one with a nickname name. But [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is beautiful. I don’t think it’s stuffy.

I love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] for you because of the versatility!
I too struggle with imagining cutesy names on adults in careers. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] has all the adaptability to be called whatever nickname or full name your daughter chooses for herself- whereas [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] doesn’t leave her many options.

Side note- I gather you are in Australia where it seems that nickname names or cutesy names are a bit more common than where I am here in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]. So take my opinion with a grain of salt!

Thank you!! This does seem like the safer option - and Posie/Posey/Posy are all adorable NN to satisfy my cutesy nickname urge!

Yes - we do love a nickname for a name here in Australia! [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] seems to have jumped up the charts a lot here, so if we did go [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] I’m sure she wouldn’t be the only one running boardrooms or operating theatres in her 30s/40s haha!!

I am a junior doctor and your comment reminds me I actually have a colleague named [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]. So there you go, you cant go wrong! Best of luck

Congratulations!

Personally, I prefer Josephine. I agree that it’s more classic and versatile, but still a fresh, pretty, sophisticated name. It feels more in line with the style of your older girls’ wonderful names — I know you said this wasn’t super important to you, but I think it’s a good indication that Josephine is very much your style and not something you’ll likely to regret. Posey is adorable, a best of both worlds choice.

Bonnie is sweet but it’s trending in a big way here in the UK too. I think UK/Aus trends are usually quite in line so just something to consider. Here is Bonnie’s trajectory here over the last 25 years.

That said, I don’t think being named Bonnie would hold a girl/woman back at all! Short, sweet, nicknamey names are very common in her generation — we will see lots of public figures named Elsie and Archie, it will just be normal. Plus, it hasn’t stopped Clover Moore!

It feels like both names go well with your daughters but I’m firmly in the [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] camp here! It seems to make you happier, feels fresh but classic in the same breath and [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] is just divine as a combo :heavy_heart_exclamation:
