Curious to see what people think of the name [name_m]Booker[/name_m]? Our last name starts with a B and rhymes with pond so it kind of makes him a bit of a [name_m]Stan[/name_m] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] character but I don’t mind the alliteration surprisingly.
Middle name will be [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]. Or maybe [name_m]Booker[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]. No nickname.
Thoughts?
The book lover in me is really loving this name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] great.
Hmmm… I’m not sure about it. I’m afraid even though you don’t want there to be a nickname, people would shorten it anyway (though to what, I’m not sure). [name_m]Case[/name_m] in point: we named our son [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] because we thought it was nickname-proof, but one grandpa and his preschool teacher both call him “[name_f]Em[/name_f].” I don’t know why, as I think it sounds like a girl’s name, but some people just can’t help but dole out nicknames!
Good luck!
@lerenard the book lover in me loves it too…awesome bonus for what I find a super wearable name.
@annbird13 I don’t particularly mind if he gets a nickname, I just meant that we won’t be using a nickname (like my parents who have called me a totally unrelated nickname - Bub or my full given first name, despite the fact that everyone automatically shortens my name to [name_u]Jess[/name_u]). If his friends/teachers/extended family find some nickname, though I don’t find that [name_m]Booker[/name_m] really lends itself to anything obvious, I wouldn’t be upset. For example, I love the name [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], but if I use it, I know I’ll call her all manner of things, from [name_f]Rose[/name_f] to [name_u]Remy[/name_u] and I just don’t have any obvious nicknames for [name_m]Booker[/name_m]. I always end up giving kids some sort of nickname (I’m a paeds nurse) that in some way relates to their name (this past weekend I took care of [name_f]Lily[/name_f], who became [name_u]Lee[/name_u], [name_f]Leelee[/name_f], Leelou, [name_f]Loulou[/name_f] & Lilypad and [name_m]Mohamed[/name_m] who is always [name_u]Mo[/name_u] or Momo). I imagine [name_m]Booker[/name_m] will, at times, be [name_u]Boo[/name_u], Booboo, Books, Bookie…but nothing I’d use with any frequency, just for fun!
As a reader I think of the [name_m]Man[/name_m] [name_m]Booker[/name_m] Prize. A good association to have, but perhaps a bit strange for a name? I’m not sure I’d consider Pulitzer a usable name (either), even though I like the sound. Then again, [name_m]Booker[/name_m] has use as a given name, like [name_m]Booker[/name_m] T. [name_m]Washington[/name_m].
@bonfireazalea - yes the [name_m]Man[/name_m] [name_m]Booker[/name_m] Prize is a bit of an odd association, though not a strong one for me so it doesn’t really bother me. It’s what I consider an off-beat classic, it peaked at #177 in 1910 and fell off the charts in 1966, so it has a decently strong history as a given name.
Honestly, I like it on paper but when I say it out loud I don’t like it at all because it sounds like “booger” and I think kids will tease too much about that. It really is easy to mistake it if you don’t annunciate carefully.
Reminds me of the [name_m]Booker[/name_m] Prize, not a bad book association.
I don’t gravitate to alliteration in names though, so it would depend how it sounds with your last name.
I knew a [name_m]Booker[/name_m] growing up. Everyone called him Ookie, pronounced Ew-key. Such an unfortunate nickname.
I like the name [name_m]Booker[/name_m]. It’s strong and it has a lot of history. And I like the [name_m]Stan[/name_m] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] esque alliteration with your surname. I’d stick with just [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] for the middle name, though. It doesn’t flow very well with [name_m]John[/name_m] in the mix, imo.
@austinlyns - I hadn’t thought of the “booger” association, though I’m not sure it’s enough to sway me from using the name. I really love it, and if he wants a nickname, we can always stretch to Body or [name_m]Brody[/name_m] with [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] in the middle, or even just plain [name_m]Bo[/name_m].
@lesliemarion - I normally hate alliteration, but I just love how [name_m]Booker[/name_m] Pond (-with-a-B) sounds.
@tarynamber - Ookie is a horrid nickname, that’s one that I would definitely quash!
