Well, I have been put on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy (10 more weeks) so I have a lot of time to think! We still have not come up with any names we totally agree on and I’m starting to stress! Nothing is really jumping out at me. I love the fact that our children’s names ([name]Knox[/name] [name]Christian[/name] and [name]Piper[/name] [name]Joy[/name]) are short (to complement our 4-syllable last name) and easy to pronounce. I used to love long flowery girls names ([name]Victoria[/name], [name]Bianca[/name] etc.), but not anymore. I like the shorter, more spunky girl names and boy names that are strong, but not pompous or yuppie sounding. A random side note: My husband’s family is Finnish so he would be insanely excited if we found a name of Finnish or Scandinavian origin. Unfortunately, I’ve looked with all 3 kids and never really found any I thought would work.
My husband gets annoyed with me talking about names all the time, but I really would feel so much better if I could get some clarity, especially if I deliver early.
So, with that said - any help or advice with our current “list” would be so very VERY much appreciated!
Girls-
[name]Elsie[/name] (He likes)
[name]Dinah[/name] (I like, but would get annoyed if people called her [name]Diana[/name] all the time)
[name]Brenna[/name] (Also like, but would be annoyed if she was always called [name]Brenda[/name])
[name]Ruby[/name] (I think we both actually like this one at the moment)
[name]Gloria[/name] (This was my grandmother’s name who recently passed away. I always wanted to use it somehow with my own child, but I have a cousin named [name]Gloria[/name] so don’t know that it’s possible.)
[name]Reagan[/name] (I was really liking this one, but he’s not totally sold)
[name]Farrah[/name] (He likes)
Boys-
[name]Finn[/name] (Cool because of his Finnish heritage, but not sure it’s very tough sounding)
[name]Blaise[/name] (This has been our #1 boy name for months, but recently my husband discovered the meaning “to lisp or stutter” and he doesn’t know if he could use it now)
[name]Bennett[/name] (We both like, but I don’t know if I’m sold)
I think [name]Dinah[/name] and [name]Farrah[/name] are absolutely lovely.
I would avoid [name]Reagan[/name], all I can think of is the former president.
For Finnish Heritage (yay I love Finland) I would instead suggest Finnish names (not a big fan of the name [name]Finn[/name], and it’s not a Finnish name!):
Ville, [name]Alvar[/name], Armas, Juha, Kauko, [name]Lari[/name], [name]Lars[/name], [name]Mauno[/name], [name]Miska[/name], Otso, [name]Paavo[/name], [name]Perttu[/name], Sulo, [name]Taavi[/name], Valto.
I think honouring your grandmother by giving a daughter her name would be beautiful, however if you have a cousin named [NAME]Gloria[/NAME], then I think you should use it as a middle name, like:
[NAME]Ruby[/NAME] [NAME]Gloria[/NAME]
[NAME]Elsie[/NAME] [NAME]Gloria[/NAME]
I also think that a Finnish name to pay tribute to your husbands ancestry would be really nice. I think there are lots of good Finnish names and you could always use English versions of the names if it get “too” Finnish. Some Finnish names for your consideration:
Boys:
Kalevi, [NAME]Juhani[/NAME], Aleksi ([NAME]Alexander[/NAME]/[NAME]Alexei[/NAME]), [NAME]Leevi[/NAME] ([NAME]Levi[/NAME]), [NAME]Veeti[/NAME] ([NAME]Ferdinand[/NAME]), [NAME]Joona (Jonah), Vesa, Aulis, [NAME]Viljo[/NAME], [NAME]Samuli[/NAME] ([NAME]Samuel[/NAME]), [NAME]Jussi[/NAME], [NAME]Arvid[/NAME], Martti, [NAME]Oskar[/NAME], [NAME]Valentin[/NAME].
Girls:
Venla (or the Swedish version [NAME]Vendela[/NAME]), [NAME]Iida[/NAME] ([NAME]Ida[/NAME]), [NAME]Aada[/NAME] ([NAME]Ada[/NAME]), [NAME]Veera[/NAME] ([NAME]Vera[/NAME]), Ritva, [NAME]Oona[/NAME], Siiri, Paiva, [NAME]Noora[/NAME] ([NAME]Nora[/NAME]), [NAME]Kaija[/NAME] ([NAME]Kaya[/NAME]), [NAME]Maija[/NAME] ([NAME]Maya[/NAME]), [NAME]Johanna[/NAME], Eliisa ([NAME]Eliza[/NAME]), Sirja, [NAME]Nelma[/NAME].
I love the name [name]Ruby[/name]! I might be biased though considering it’s my youngest daughter’s name =) I think [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Gloria[/name] would be a beautiful name that would still honor your grandmother.
When I was younger I had a Finnish penpal named [name]Katja[/name]. Her sisters are Satu and [name]Marit[/name].
For girls you might like: [name]Aria[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], [name]Vera[/name], [name]Freya[/name], [name]Tyra[/name], [name]Thora[/name], [name]Tegan[/name], [name]Brynn[/name], [name]Wren[/name]
The most popular girls’ name in Finland last year was [name]Sofia[/name].
For boys you might like: [name]Elias[/name] (most popular boy name in Finland last year), [name]Alaric[/name], [name]Blaine[/name], [name]Tate[/name], [name]Jensen[/name], [name]Stefan[/name], [name]Stellan[/name], [name]Soren[/name], [name]Magnus[/name], [name]Kai[/name], [name]Ren[/name]
I really like the suggestion of using [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Gloria[/name] or [name]Elsie[/name] [name]Gloria[/name]. For your boys list, [name]Finn[/name] or [name]Bennett[/name] are okay, but I like the suggestions of [name]Oskar[/name], [name]Tate[/name], [name]Stellan[/name], [name]Kai[/name], [name]Magnus[/name], or [name]Elias[/name] much better and think these work well with your other children’s names too.
I am all for [name]Ruby[/name], I like the sound of [name]Knox[/name], [name]Piper[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name]. I agree with shvibziks. I love the combo [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Gloria[/name]. And the fact it is a family name makes it even better!
The boys names on your list are not jumping out at me with [name]Knox[/name] and [name]Piper[/name]. If I had to choose I would probably pick [name]Bennett[/name] or [name]Finn[/name].
I recently told my mom that we were considering [name]Ruby[/name] and she told me it sounded like a stripper. This is EXACTLY why we never talk to other people about names before the baby is born. [name]Do[/name] you think this is a deal-breaker? I still really like it, but haven’t come across a middle name that’s perfect.
I really wish I could like [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Gloria[/name] to honor my grandmother, but I just don’t feel like it sounds right with our 4 syllable last name. I’d like to find something short and cute like “[name]Joy[/name]” my daughter’s middle name. I really feel like 1 syllable is the way to go. I found that “[name]Dove[/name]” is in my family tree (triple great grandmother who came from Germany). I can’t decide if I like it or not??
I do like the suggestion of “[name]Glory[/name]” instead of “[name]Gloria[/name]” - I had actually mentioned that to my husband a while ago, but he wasn’t crazy about it and it also sounds very similar to my mom’s name, “[name]Lori[/name]”…
I don’t think [name]Ruby[/name] sounds like a stripper at all! [name]Both[/name] my great grandmother and grandmother were [name]Ruby[/name] and I have this picture of my great grandmother on her wedding day wearing a short green flapper dress with black beading - THAT’S what [name]Ruby[/name] bring to mind for me. Quirky and vintage, not trashy at all.
What about something like [name]Wren[/name], [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Cate[/name]/[name]Kate[/name], [name]Liv[/name], [name]Claire[/name], [name]Gwen[/name], [name]Nelle[/name], or maybe even [name]Joan[/name] or [name]Jane[/name] in the middle?
[name]Bennett[/name] is my little boy’s name, so it is by far my fav from your list. I despise [name]Blaise[/name]. I really like [name]Elsie[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], and [name]Gloria[/name]!
[name]Elsie[/name] 7/10
[name]Dinah[/name] 4/10 (i dont think she will be called [name]Diana[/name])
[name]Brenna[/name] 8.5/10 (i dont think she will be called brenda)
[name]Ruby[/name] 10/10
[name]Gloria[/name] 6/10 but i like it for a middle!
[name]Reagan[/name] 9/10
[name]Farrah[/name] 8/10
[name]Ruby[/name] is not a stripper name! [name]Love[/name] it! From your list, I like [name]Ruby[/name] for a girl and [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Finn[/name] for a boy (though it’s not getting much love on this thread!).
I like the name [name]Ruby[/name] too! And for the boys,I would like the names [name]Aleksi[/name] ([name]Alexander[/name]/[name]Alexei[/name]), [name]Leevi[/name] ([name]Levi[/name]).
[name]Finn[/name] - great name and I think it’s strong sounding.
[name]Blaise[/name]- I agree, not the greatest meaning. What about [name]Blaze[/name]? It is a form of [name]Blaise[/name] but can also mean flame.
[name]Bennett[/name] - a fresh way to get to the nn [name]Ben[/name].
[name]Elsie[/name] - Too nn sounding. What about [name]Elise[/name]?
[name]Dinah[/name]- [name]Lovely[/name] and I really don’t think you will get too many people calling her [name]Diana[/name].
[name]Brenna[/name]-Great name. Same as above; I don’t foresee you having too much trouble with mispronunciation.
[name]Ruby[/name]- Again lovely name.
[name]Gloria[/name]- I really like this one, but wouldn’t use it unless it’s your cousin’s mn.
[name]Reagan[/name]- I’m sorry but I don’t think this name is pretty at all. And it definitely reminds me of the president, so unless that’s what you’re going for…
[name]Farrah[/name]- Very pretty with a great meaning.

Of your girl choices, I really like Dinah. She could be whoever she wants to. Strong but spunky. Dinah Glory could be a sweet and unexpected combination. I think June could make a nice match with Piper as well. Any more girl family names up for grabs?
I really like Blaise, especially with brother Knox. However, I know from experience that once the hubs gets wind of a meaning he’s less than fond of, there is really no hope. My recommendation is Vale Bennett. Fresh, preserves some of the sounds you liked, and goes well with your other kids’ names
Whatever you decide, congrats! So sorry that you’re on bed rest. I only had to put up with it for a few days and it was awful - can’t imagine 10 weeks. The good news is, this site will give you something to obsess over and keep you occupied!
ETA: I wouldn’t worry too much about Dinah being mistaken for Diana. People would be at least as surprised to hear Diana on a baby, and old school biblical names are all the rage, so she won’t be out of place.
