boy name anguish

We found out yesterday that we are having a boy. We both wanted a girl but will be happy either way with a healthy baby. But, we had two lovely girls names that we both loved, and one ok boys name. Now that we know it’s a boy we need to revisit our choices, or come up with a new list, but we can’t agree on anything! Our ‘ok’ boys name is [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m], named after two grandfathers. This name just doesn’t feel like my son’s name, and I would prefer that he have his own first name, not named after half a dozen men on my side and at least two on Hubby’s side. I’m considering it a back up name for now, it’s still Hubby’s first choice. I’d love some help with names I can suggest to him.

It’s really hard to identify a style that he likes. As far as I can discern it has to be classic or at least historical, ‘strong’, mostly can’t end in a vowel. (For example, [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] is a no, [name_m]Antonio[/name_m] is maybe because it’s family again on both sides. He doesn’t like [name_u]Tony[/name_u] for a nickname, but also doesn’t like Nio, which I think is perfect, he thinks is ‘weak.’) Whenever I ask him to come up with names he turns to Scottish names, so I think he’d like something Scottish, or maybe Italian, which is his heritage, mine is Irish/English and Italian.

To add to the difficulty, our last name ends in -son, so i’d prefer to avoid names that end in -son,-en, -on, though if they are in every other way perfect I’d consider them. He only seems to notice this on girls names for some reason. I also prefer more unusual names, but at this point anything out of the top 10 i’d probably be ok with, though the more esoteric the better, but not made up.

Middle name will likely be [name_m]Paul[/name_m].

Thanks for your help, and letting me vent, I’m hoping some of you who are so good at this can help us out.

Hmmm okay I’ll try to throw out some suggestions that may work:

[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
[name_m]Cormac[/name_m]
[name_m]Enzo[/name_m]/[name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] - ends in a vowel but sounds strong to me
[name_m]Dominic[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Nico[/name_u] or [name_m]Dom[/name_m])
[name_m]Vaughn[/name_m]
[name_m]Alec[/name_m]
[name_u]Bryce[/name_u]
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_m]Graham[/name_m]
[name_m]Andres[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafael[/name_m]

It’s tough to find Italian boy’s names that don’t end in a vowel.

Would he be willing to compromise if he could use [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] as the middle names and you get to choose the first name?

Suggestions…

I like [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m], it’s really strong and handsome.

I think [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] is great.

Thanks all, some of these he has already veto-ed or are names of relatives. But I’ll put the others on my list and ask him about them. I’m beyond even guessing what he likes now. I saw [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] alot, I love that, he liked it for a hot second one day, but now he doesn’t, I don’t know why. [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] also appeared alot, I have a cousin [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] I’m pretty close with, and my other cousins Husband is also [name_m]Zachary[/name_m], so no [name_m]Zachary[/name_m]. Thanks though!

I haven’t yet asked him about the idea of two middles, but I don’t think it would change much. He is already getting to choose the middle(s). [name_m]Paul[/name_m] is his choice, i don’t particularly like it but, it’s a middle.

Ok so you need a solid ‘manly’ name that doesn’t end in n or a vowel and you are considering [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] and Then [name_m]Paul[/name_m] for a middle name. It would help to know what girls names you like and if this is your first child but I understand not wanting to share everything  I would say [name_m]Paul[/name_m] is a strong middle as would be a double middle if you wanted to give him [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m]. Honestly either is very nice. As far as first names I agree a name of his own is a good thing.

It seems like your husband really cares about the boys name so I’m going to tell you my husbands suggestions and some I suggested to him that he didn’t hate. [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m], and a few others a family member used who cares a lot [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] ‘[name_m]Dan[/name_m]’, [name_m]David[/name_m], and there’s always [name_u]Michael[/name_u] and [name_m]Abram[/name_m] and [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] ‘[name_m]Jake[/name_m]’, those are all strong and a bit flexible. Theres longer ideas like [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] and [name_m]Nehemiah[/name_m] but that might be a vowel sound ending, [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] is the Scottish [name_u]James[/name_u], I love it personally, [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] or [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] sound good to me and that’s very strong. [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] is a very boy name, very, [name_m]Joe[/name_m] is very solid but has an O sound at the end, though its never going out of style.

I know none of them are amazingly shiny and super uncommon but a lot are underused and they are very solid options. If he’s currently looking at [name_u]James[/name_u] I think those are worth looking over.

My husband likes Italian-y names, some a little out there, but maybe they will help you!
