Was wondering of thoughts on naming a girl Calix, possibly with the nickname Cal or Cali. Its considered a boy’s name, but i personally can see it as unisex since its like a twist on Alex which is used regularly for boys and girls. I do want honest opinions, but I’ll just add that I tend to like gender neutral names, though i understand its not everyones style. Thanks very much!
Can’t see any reason why not. I would maybe opt for a more traditionally female name for the middle to follow it but I quite like it as a first name for a girl.
I think it could work. It comes from a word according to nameberry, so I don’t see why not
I think it’s unisex, it’s a word name after all — referring to the “cup” of a flower — and similar in sound to the likes of [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_u]Alix[/name_u].
It’s lovely! There’s also the more literally botanical [name_m]Calyx[/name_m] spelling if that strikes you.
I agree with PPs, it’s a word name so it’s pretty solidly unisex imo!
I think due to it originally being a word name and due to it being extremely uncommon, I wouldn’t necessarily expect a [name_m]Calix[/name_m] to be any particular gender. I have never met one, and I feel like I see it as completely gender neutral.
Honestly [name_f]Imo[/name_f] its such a nice name! Also tbh gender is a social construct therefore there are no boys and girls name but i understand what you mean by society still having the view that it isn’t a social construct <3
[name_m]Calix[/name_m] is great! It’s a top pick for a female character’s middle name, and while it seems more masculine to me than [name_f]Calixta[/name_f], the obviously feminine variant, I honestly kind of prefer the sound of [name_m]Calix[/name_m]. Another (also female) character is named Calixti-- let’s see if that registers on the Nameberry database lol. Essentially, I really wouldn’t worry about the blue on Nameberry, since [name_m]Calix[/name_m] doesn’t appear obviously masculine and is a really awesome name.
I like it. I think it’s spunky. I think because it’s uncommon people won’t automatically think it’s a “boy name” especially because [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is a common nickname for girls and [name_f]Callie[/name_f] is a name I think most people have at least heard of, so it’s definitely usable for a girl.
Honestly it sounds super cool on a girl! I like it <3
I’ve only ever heard of it on a girl before!
i think it would work well for a girl !! it’s origin is as a botanical word, which makes it immediately feel unisex to me, and the potential of the more feminine nickname cali/callie keeps it versatile. it’s also not exactly a common name for boys, so most people probably wouldn’t even consider it a ‘boy name’. i think it would be a really cool name !
I think it would work great for a girl. I personally think it sounds like it could be used for both boy and girl.
Thank you and everyone, for all the feedback! On other nameboards often gender neutral names get bashed pretty hard since theyre just not for everyone but this was positive! If i went the gender neutral route i do like to balance it out with a more traditional girl name. But I like the inclusive idea that genders dont have to be so defined too!
