Hello! I will be having my second boy in a few months, and big brother’s name is [name_u]Dean[/name_u]. We love Dean’s name and knew early that it was “the name”, but we’re having trouble this time.

We love timeless, familiar yet uncommon names that feel fresh! Nothing too trendy or too popular.

Names we love but cannot use for various reasons: [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m], [name_u]Jack[/name_u], [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u].

Other tips: our last name is easy and goes with anything (English origin 2 syllable) and middle name will be a family name (not particularly concerned with how the first name sounds with it).

I have always loved [name_u]Dean[/name_u] & [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] together I think they are such a cool pairing that feel stylish with this imagery surrounding a downtown jazz club where they play saxophone and piano at. I think they are very cool.

Congratulations! So exciting for baby number 2 and also [name_u]Dean[/name_u] becoming a big brother. I’m on the same boat when it comes to names— I like classic, familiar, but not overused. One thing that helped me when looking was I looked up the most popular names in just my state, rather then focusing on the entirety of the US! It might shift what names you feel you can use.

I’m so sorry to reply so late! Thank you so much for these thoughtful lists — you get my type for sure.

From some inspiration from these lists as well as some browsing and family tree research, we have the following list but no decision yet at all. I’d love some feedback! I’ve included our reasons for hesitancy, too.

Louis — my husband LOVES “Lou”, but I want a formal name. I love the “Louie” pronunciation but worry this wouldn’t go over well in the US. Not sure I like the “Lewis” pronunciation.

Hugh — I thought this was a nice compromise on my love for Andrew/Drew and husband’s love for Lou. He’s not tickled by this option but hasn’t crossed it off. I like the Midcentury vibe and could see it growing on me super fast once I see a baby Hugh’s face :slight_smile:

Merrick — love this. It’s a surname on my mom’s side and also sounds like my mom’s first name. We like any nickname we could think of (Mick, Mickey, Rick, Rickey). Only hold up is that I worry how this slightly obscure name pairs with our firstborn, Dean. Is Merrick too much of an outlier name for our family of common names? I like how they sound together, just wondering if they have to be equally common. And would I be setting him up for a lifetime of people mishearing his name as Eric or Derek? Or misspellings?

Kenneth — I love this one. Fits so well, and I think Kenny is super cute. However, “Ken” rhymes with my husband’s name and sounds a little too similar to firstborn, Dean. Do I run the risk of him going by Ken and living with a Ben, Dean, Ken trio? Not sure I like that. I’d be fine with Kenneth/Kenny.

Simon — checks all the boxes, no concerns like we have with the other name. Just doesn’t get us as excited as other names. Wondering if it would grow on us with time once there’s a baby in our arms with the name?

Lachlan — such a cool name and honors both of our roots (Scottish term to describe the Vikings) but feels like we’d be pigeon-holing ourselves for a third child to have a Celtic name.

Wade — my husband would go this route in a heartbeat. Does it sound like a cowboy name? That’s my issue. I like Dean for its sophisticated vibe, but I feel Wade pulls the sibset towards country western too much for my taste. Thoughts?

Harrison, Desmond, Henrik and Russell were mentioned. I absolutely love all of these but all are names of family members in my generation. Boooo!

I see no problem with the name in the US, no bad associations, and nothing a quick pronunciation check wouldn’t fix! I think it’s sweet, classic, hansdome, and the nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u] (my nickname!!) is so quirky and playful-cool! You could spell it [name_u]Louie[/name_u] also to be sure people say Loo-ee.
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]-AAaahh I love this too! [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is so dashing and all vintage sweetness! [name_u]Unique[/name_u], but matches the familiarity of [name_u]Dean[/name_u]! 10/10
[name_m]Merrick[/name_m]- I like that it has a family connection, but for me the match with [name_u]Dean[/name_u] isn’t perfect, as [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] feels a little more modern/surnamey. In general, I would say that the vibes of names don’t always have to match perfectly to create a great sibset, but [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] isn’t clicking for me. I do think it might get confused with [name_m]Eric[/name_m] or [name_m]Derek[/name_m]. (BTW, I love [name_m]Eric[/name_m] or [name_m]Derek[/name_m] for you!!) However, the nicknames are totally adorable, especially [name_u]Ricky[/name_u]!
[name_m]Kenneth[/name_m]-Reminds me of the doll [name_m]Ken[/name_m], but I do think the vibes are on for this one. [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] does have the same dated-cute, recognizable feel as [name_u]Dean[/name_u]. Honestly though, I prefer just [name_m]Kenny[/name_m]! Quite nicknamey, yes, but I think it’s so cute and [name_m]Kenny[/name_m] and [name_u]Dean[/name_u] are perfect! The long version [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] is very tied to the 80s and barbie dolls for me, also it’s a bit surnamey. That’s just personal taste though, because [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] and [name_u]Dean[/name_u] are very cohesive.
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]- Totally agree with you that [name_m]Simon[/name_m] fits, just doesn’t wow. It would grow on you, but I think there are better options on your list! [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is sensible and neat, but the -N ending with [name_u]Dean[/name_u] sounds a bit off-just not as nice as some of your other sets!
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]- A bit more trendy then [name_u]Dean[/name_u], but cute all the same! I like that it ties to your heritage and the nicknames Locke/Lockie are swoonworthy! I like other options better, but [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is still a good choice!
[name_u]Wade[/name_u]-Love. Fits well with [name_u]Dean[/name_u] and is unique, strong, and cool. I do think it does make the set a bit Western/Cowboy, but not overly so. Maybe just makes it a bit more playful, outdoorsey, and rugged? I do really like it, but if you don’t like the cowboy feel, I would pick something else.

Overall, my favourites are [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], [name_u]Wade[/name_u], [name_m]Louis[/name_m], and [name_m]Kenny[/name_m]! You have some great options, therefore your baby’s name will be great! (I love [name_u]Dean[/name_u] so much by the way!)
