Hello all, ive been lurking around here for a while but his is my first post.
I am expecting my first child and i thought i had found a great name!.. until I realized how popular it was.
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. Altas [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] to be precise. Apparently i live under a rock and havent heard it used by anyone ive ever met.
For girls we have picked:
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] elaine
Or
[name_f]Birgitta[/name_f] Reen
Altas was our first boy name we even considered as we have a tough time with boy names. We like names that are a bit out of use but not weird to hear. Like my name: [name_f]Marina[/name_f]
Any help from you lovely experts? Many thanks in advance for your consideration!
Our last name is Sinden and we prefer strong masucline names, not necessarily greek as we have looked through those. We also will be living in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] if that matters with popularity.
I agree that [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] is not that popular, unless it’s a lot more popular in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] than the US. [name_m]Just[/name_m] popular on nameberry.
I would check the popularity in the area where you are or will be living. [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] is definitely a trendy choice right now here in Northern [name_u]California[/name_u], but may be unheard of in other places. It also gets a lot of buzz online, so def verify the actual numbers - I check the social security stats in the US, who keeps track of these things in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]?
If you have loved the name before discovering its somewhat trendiness, I would consider whether it’s really worth switching to a name you may love less just to have something less common, or whether you can live with it (ALL names have up- and downsides).
Lastly, even the most popular names today are given to so many less children than was the case for [name_m]John[/name_m] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] back in the day… lots of info on that on BabyNameWizard.com.
IDK about Canadian popularity, but the only place I’ve heard of anyone, baby or otherwise, being called [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] is Nameberry… I’d say go ahead and use it. I know it’s ranked in the 300s in the US, which is only about 1000 babies (I looked it up). The only issue I see is it kind of runs into your last name with all the S sounds. For girls, I really like [name_f]Daphne[/name_f].
Use it anyway. If it’s name you’re obsessed with then it’s worth it. Depending on the class your son may never meet another [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] in his class but might have 3 Caspians in his class in 4th grade you never know. Popularity doesn’t really matter - it’s just Nameberry.
I don’t think [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] is too popular - it might just appear popular in nameberry forums since a lot of berries like unusual names. Either way [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] is really nice, but I’ll also suggest [name_m]Altair[/name_m], [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m] and [name_m]Bruno[/name_m]
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] isn’t all that popular! There isn’t national data in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] like there is in the US, but BC and [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] have good stats for 2017, and [name_f]Alberta[/name_f] has its data from 2016 available. In 2017, BC had 20 baby boys called [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] (#1 was [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], there were 220 of them), [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] had 0, and in 2016 [name_f]Alberta[/name_f] had 13 boys called [name_m]Atlas[/name_m].
If that’s still too popular for you, what did you like about [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] in particular?
These Greek mythology related names had fewer than 5 babies given the name in BC in 2017:
[name_m]Titan[/name_m]
[name_m]Ajax[/name_m]
[name_m]Apollo[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m]
[name_m]Leander[/name_m]
[name_m]Tycho[/name_m], Tychon
[name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]
I don’t actually think [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] is too popular. It is definitely well liked and with good reason! Checking the Social Security name list for 2017 it’s still below the top 200 names. So familiar but not over the top popular.
Compared to that, [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] was rated similarly for girls (#385 compared to [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] at #329.)
And from what I’ve gathered both names are less popular in [name_f]Canada[/name_f].
[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and wouldn’t say [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] is a common name. I have only heard it once before. I say if you love it, use it! The current trendy names are the same as they are in the US - [name_m]Liam[/name_m] is #1.
I don’t think [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] is very popular at all. I only know one [name_f]Berrie[/name_f] baby named [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], and one other that has it as a middle name. [name_m]Ive[/name_m] never met an [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] in real life.
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] is gorgeous. I’d stick with it.
