Hey y’all. I’m sure you see this quite often but I am writing a novel currently and have been scouring the internet for names with dark meanings. If you know of any good boy names that mean sorrowful, broken, hidden, dark or anything along those lines I would greatly appreciate it! It is set in [name_f]England[/name_f] if that helps at all! Thank you in advance,
Jabez – “sorrow” in Hebrew
[name_m]Dougal[/name_m] – “dark stranger” from Gaelic Dubhghall
[name_u]Duff[/name_u] – “dark” from Gaelic dubh
[name_m]Dunstan[/name_m] – “dark stone” from Old [name_f]English[/name_f]
[name_u]Sam[/name_u] – “dark” in Avestan; from Persian mythology
hey welcome to nameberry!
here are some ideas for you i’m also British so i’ll try and suggest ones that i’ve actually heard being used on people here or are familiar:
Blake - ‘dark’ (can also mean fair-haired)
[name_m]Ciaran[/name_m] - ‘little dark one’ (pronounced like [name_u]Kieran[/name_u])
Donnely - ‘dark’ or ‘brave one’
[name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] - ‘dark haired’
[name_m]Keiran[/name_m], [name_u]Kieran[/name_u], [name_u]Kiernan[/name_u] - all mean ‘little dark one’
[name_m]Perran[/name_m] - ‘little dark one’ also a place in Cornwall
[name_u]Brennan[/name_u] - ‘descendant of the sad one’
i’ve also moved this thread to the ‘writers corner’ category as it’s for a novel :)) Then people will go there specifically ready to name characters!! x
Kieran could work, or [name_m]Kier[/name_m] (means little dark one )
Tristan!! (one of two meanings is sorrowful and that’s how I picture it, bittersweet)
Sullivan (dark-eyed or something like that)
sorry I don’t have more for you!!
Good luck! Let me know what you think, and don’t hesitate to tell me if I got the style wrong, I’ll be happy to repost!
Ooooh, I love so many of these, I will definitely be including a few of these in the books! Thank you so much for all of your help, could not have thought of these on my own.
