Boy Name Poll: A Brother for Simon

We are having trouble choosing a name for our second son. His older brother’s name is [name_m]Simon[/name_m]. I am seeking feedback on these options:

[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Marshall[/name_m]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m]
[name_m]Phillip[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m]
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]

Some reasons we can’t settle on “the one…”

I am hesitant to use [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] due to its similarity to “[name_m]Alvin[/name_m]” and the possibility of being compared to “The Chipmunks” sibling set. [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] is not my favorite choice due to the fact that it is quite popular where I live. The name [name_m]Peter[/name_m] would inevitably be shortened to “[name_m]Pete[/name_m],” which would then make his name identical to the famous baseball player. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is hesitant to use [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] because he thinks it sounds too nerdy and will negatively impact our son.

Thanks for any feedback!

I like them all a lot except for maybe [name_m]Marshall[/name_m], not my flavour.

You’re so lucky you’ve got such a great last name! [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], it’s just so lovely to say, but I can see where your husband is coming from with the nerdy feeling. The nn [name_m]Art[/name_m] is a little less nerdy?

I think [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] or [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] sound best together, [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Julian[/name_m] / [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] are super cute too but I’m wary of the matching ‘n’ endings.

good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. I am also not a fan of sibling names ending in the same sound, so [name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] are not likely “the one.” Other names I like are [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m], and [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], but my husband is not sold on those options. At this point, I have no clue what we will name this kid. We are running out of time!

Wow – these are all great names! I’m not a fan of [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] or [name_m]Marshall[/name_m], but that’s just me. The others are right up my alley – classic, handsome, gorgeous! I agree that [name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] probably wouldn’t sound great. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. So perfectly handsome. I also love the sound of [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (and it sort of plays off [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]). I’m totally jealous of your awesome last name!

I will also say, though, that I firmly believe you can go through life with an easily shortened name and not shorten it. So if [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is “the one”, go for it and always call him [name_m]Peter[/name_m]. I know a [name_m]Peter[/name_m] (always called [name_m]Peter[/name_m], even though his last name began with R also) and I am a [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] (always called [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]), so it can be done.

Most of all, don’t worry. He will have a name and it will be perfect because he is perfect and he’s yours – not because you spent hours, days, weeks, etc. worrying about it. I’ve been there: no name, going into labor, baby born, nameless, then all of a sudden – the right name came along. [name_m]Just[/name_m] relax and enjoy.

I read a book once where there was two brothers named [name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m]. I loved the names, and how they sounded together. I like [name_m]Vince[/name_m]/[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]. [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] sound very good together too.

Catheyc, thanks for the suggestion of [name_m]Zachary[/name_m]. I do like that name, but have a friend who used it. I am sure you are right regarding the shortened name. If and when he would decide to shorten it himself, he would have every right to do so anyway. Also, thanks for the kind words about not stressing too much over his name. I will try to take your advice.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you all think names ending in “R” may not flow well with a last name that begins with the same letter? DH brought this up recently.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites with [name_m]Simon[/name_m] from your list are [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_m]Phillip[/name_m].

I feel like you might know this, but I just thought I’d point out that the disciple [name_m]Simon[/name_m] was renamed [name_m]Peter[/name_m] in the [name_m]New[/name_m] Testament, so it could be a cool connection for brothers or may be repetitive.

I love [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] together, and I didn’t think of the Chipmunks at all!
[name_f]My[/name_f] second favourite is [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] sounds very handsome and works well with [name_m]Simon[/name_m].

The only name I don’t think I’d use myself is [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]. [name_m]Way[/name_m] too associated with Klein for me.

Since you prefer names that don’t end in N like [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and you are worried about names that end in R running in with your last name, then what about names that end in A? Like [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m], [name_m]Zachariah[/name_m]? Or what about [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]? [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Jonas[/name_m]. [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. maybe that’s too heavy on the -oh abd -s sound. [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]. I really like [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]. [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] just popped in my head too. [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]. Or do you like [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m] nn [name_m]Zeke[/name_m]? [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Zeke[/name_m] is really cute!

[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]! [name_m]Simon[/name_m] & [name_m]Vincent[/name_m]. This is my pick.

[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_m]Julian[/name_m] are nice, but they have the matchy ending with [name_m]Simon[/name_m]. Still fine choices though.
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] - I like these too, but r’s kind of blend into last name.
[name_m]Marshall[/name_m] works well with your last name, but not my fave name. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]?
[name_m]Peter[/name_m] - pete rose. nix
[name_m]Phillip[/name_m] - ok but kind of boring
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] - don’t love with [name_f]Rose[/name_f], kind of blends to sound like last name is Crose.

I think [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is such a gem! It’s not common but it’s so handsome and Biblical. [name_f]My[/name_f] votes are for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m]. Those are both splendid names! Best of luck Mama!!!

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] was the name that popped into my head upon reading the title of your post! [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] just “go” together for me…they have a similar feeling. I think that [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is incredibly handsome (and no, I don’t think that that fact that [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] ends and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] begins with an R is detrimental).

You seem to like classic boys’ names. Here are a few more suggestions for you:

[name_m]Timothy[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_u]Michael[/name_u]
[name_m]Edward[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Robert[/name_m]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_u]Francis[/name_u]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]/[name_m]Nathan[/name_m]
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]
[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Caleb[/name_m]
[name_m]Marcus[/name_m]

Good luck!

[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] - ends in “n” like [name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Marshall[/name_m] - [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] is a word and so is [name_f]Rose[/name_f] so it’s not ideal.
[name_m]Peter[/name_m] - I love this name but it ends in “r” which runs into your “R” surname
[name_m]Phillip[/name_m] - I prefer the [name_m]Philip[/name_m] spelling but I think it flows well with [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] - [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite on your list. Strong and handsome.
[name_m]Julian[/name_m] - see [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - see [name_m]Peter[/name_m]

[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m]
[name_m]Graham[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is adorable and not at all nerdy. This is my favorite!

The only one I would hesitate using is [name_m]Peter[/name_m]. Not just because of [name_m]Pete[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]… [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is too biblical.

[name_m]Simon[/name_m] is a great name to work with because it fits into several different style families. I actually really love [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] for you. [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] are smashing as brothers. There have been several other suggestions that I think are fantastic - [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m], [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], [name_m]Bennett[/name_m]…

Thank you so much for all the valuable feedback everyone. I truly appreciate it.

Ruolon, I did read about the [name_m]Simon[/name_m]/[name_m]Peter[/name_m] connection when researching the names. I thought it was interesting.

Sunkissedchild, I am glad to hear you did not think of The Chipmunks. I can’t get it out of my head for some reason.

Cocowhite, I never even thought of the fashion label connection with [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]. It makes me think if [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] & [name_m]Hobbes[/name_m], though.

Ad10, thanks for the name suggestions. I really like [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] and [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]. I will run those by my husband.

Emsky, thanks for your feedback. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m], but the husband nixed it. Your feedback is very spot on with how I feel when I go over the names in my head. I love [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Vince[/name_m]).

Miladyarya, thanks for the compliment on [name_m]Simon[/name_m]. I am so in love with his name. I feel like I will never find another I love as much.

Claireelise, thanks for the name suggestions. From your list I like [name_m]Edward[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], and [name_u]Francis[/name_u]. We will see what the husband thinks.

[name_u]Mischa[/name_u], I really appreciate the detailed feedback and name suggestions. You have some great ones on there. Some that stick out to me are [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m], [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], and [name_m]Vincent[/name_m].

Babymakesthree, maybe I can show this thread to my husband to convince him [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is not nerdy.

Niteowel13, we wondered about the Biblical overload with using some of these names.

Southernmaple, thanks so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it.

Ha ha – I was worried after I posted that might have come across the wrong way. Actually, no – with a last name like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] that is so well-known, I think you’d be okay. It’s not like people would think his name is [name_m]Peter[/name_m] Ose or [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] Ose. The one I knew had a last name that was much less well-known and sounded like [name_m]Peter[/name_m] Oyer. [name_m]Just[/name_m] say them over and over to yourself and see what you think – I find it varies from person to person. [name_f]My[/name_f] last name begins with S and is very uncommon, so I sadly ruled out all names ending in S, but I’ve seen others who like the way it sounds. If you can say it over and over and still like it (or, as I like to do, can picture it on a novel in big letters as the author’s name), it’s fine.

What about [name_m]Archer[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]?

I think [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is actually less nerdy than [name_m]Simon[/name_m]!
