I’ve always liked the name [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. We are expecting our first (a boy). I worry about the popularity of [name_m]Luke[/name_m] (top 50) and the ever similar [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] (top 10). Are boys who are named [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] getting called [name_m]Luke[/name_m]? I’d almost be comfortable with a top 50 name, but I feel like the popularity of [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] increases the chances of a ton of little [name_m]Lukes[/name_m] running around.
I’ve always been less drawn to top 100 names, but now that we’re expecting boy I’m more drawn to them than I expected to be. I love a good classic boy name. For example, I love the name [name_u]Noah[/name_u]! (DH hates it because it’s ‘biblical’… [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is biblical disguised by rugged cowboy so my husband doesn’t apparently notice).
[name_f]Do[/name_f] boys really care about the popularity factor of their name? I grew up the only one with my name and loved it… my brother grew up the only one with his name and didn’t like it as much. Other top names on our list are [name_m]Warren[/name_m], [name_m]Cole[/name_m], and [name_m]Grant[/name_m]. We want rugged and strong yet kind. Middle name is [name_u]Michael[/name_u].
Thank you for your help
My favourite out of your suggestions is [name_m]Luke[/name_m]! If you love it go for it! [name_m]Luke[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u] doesn’t have the best flow but it is still a very nice name! I doubt most young boys would care about sharing a name and would most likely think it was “cool”.
Lucas “[name_m]Luke[/name_m]” would be fine, but I must say I prefer the flow of [name_m]Cole[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u] is still great, though!
I too have grown up the only one with my name, but my brother grew up with a boy that had the same name as him and they both thought it was the coolest thing ever, so I think (usually) young boys won’t care about having the same name as classmates or friends. So, I think going with [name_m]Luke[/name_m] would be a perfectly good option.
If you’re still really unsure, I love [name_m]Warren[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u]! That’s so handsome!
Thanks! This is helpful.
[name_m]Warren[/name_m] is actually our front runner. But I’m testing driving others and having long in depth thoughts on names and popularity haha. Thank you for those suggestions. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]… DH knows a [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] he doesn’t like
The Lucases I know all go by [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], not [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. And I only know one [name_m]Luke[/name_m] who is in his 30s, so it doesn’t feel too popular, at least not where I live.
I think you’re fine. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is a great choice!
I like [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. I’ve only come across a few and the boys called [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] [name_m]Ive[/name_m] known haven’t gone by [name_m]Luke[/name_m].
My brother has an unusual middle name and dislikes it so I’m not sure boys mind quite so much about having a popular name (maybe that’s generalising a bit)??
I don’t think you can really know if someone would want a more unique name or not. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and I grew up with a ton of other Katies and mostly it was just a fun link for me. [name_f]My[/name_f] brother had a much more unique name but I don’t think he even thought about it.
However if youre going with a very common middle name it might be nice to have a more unique first name.
I think [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u] “[name_m]Luke[/name_m]” is great!
What about [name_u]Luca[/name_u] [name_u]Michael[/name_u]? If popularity does bother you, [name_u]Luca[/name_u] is a less popular but familiar alternative
I love [name_m]Luke[/name_m]! It’s high on my list too. I know a lot of boys and men named [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] but none go by [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and I don’t actually know any people named just [name_m]Luke[/name_m] personally. I know it’s risen in popularity recently compared to when I was born in the 1990s and I don’t know a ton of little kids, but I definitely don’t think it’s everywhere or anything.
The couple of [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]’s I know don’t go by [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. Reflecting the numbers, I know more [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]’s than [name_m]Lukes[/name_m] but know a [name_m]Luke[/name_m] or two as well.
Go with your favorite. I’ve met more [name_u]Luca[/name_u]’s than [name_m]Luke[/name_m]’s. Also it may be popular all around but look into how popular it is where you live. [name_f]Emma[/name_f] is insanely popular but I’ve only met one.
If you’re in a [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] celebrating place, I’d be careful with [name_m]Cole[/name_m]. All the Coles I went to school with had coal jokes the entire season.
