most baby name sites i come across focus on girl names! after a week or two i’ve exhausted nameberrys limited resources since the keep posting the same names over and over.

some of which have been fabulous at always finding new & different names, but the majority are still girls.
Unless there was a name website whose members were predominantly male, I doubt that you would find a name website/blog that focuses on boys’ names. Nearly everyone searching for names or geeking out over names is a woman, and women tend to have a gender bias toward girls. All you have to do is compare the number of posts in the girls’ forum and the boys’ forum to see the proof. There are also far more names in the girls’ pool than the boys’ pool, which naturally leads to more discussion. I personally think boys’ names are far more interesting; I only get excited about a handful of girls’ names, and my boys’ list has always been longer than my girls’.
If you’re looking for new or obscure boys’ names, try checking the bottom of the SSA lists. Names with less than 100 uses is a good place to start.
Yes it’s very annoying to see how limited boy names are on this and other sites. I’ve always dreamed of having boys and maybe 1 girl so I’m far more interested in boy names. Most people are fearful of going against the grain with boy names so they have a narrow view of what’s acceptable. I always check the girl name lists because some sites, including Nameberry, will list a boy/unisex name as female and not even acknowledge that it is used for boys too
i need even farther out than top 100, i need outside the top 1000 so i have been looking at the ssa’s beyond the top 1000 lists but its waaaay slow going. some of the above blogs have posts from them and they’ve taken the time to find the most interesting or the first time a name appeared.
namecandy is even worse than nameberry, its all about trend and celebrities which is the opposite of what i want. while i dont want some crazy hard to pronounce boy name, i’d like to find something older and obscure. ive found one or two that might work, that roll off the tongue nicely or have a good nickname, but they just arent quiet right yet.
I’m currently compiling a list of obscure boys names (ones that first appeared on the Social Security list in 2012) but it is a very tedious process. My best advice is to go to the Social Security site and look at the 2012 list (or recent years) starting at the bottom (the most uncommon boys names are at the bottom) Then to easily find U.S. popularity, go to the Our Baby Namer website under the “Popularity” tab and plug in your favorite names. It is an arduous task, but it will be worth it. Best wishes–I am sure you’ll find something fantastic!
Here’s all I have so far. To reiterate, these are names that first showed up on the 2012 SSA list and only are used for boys unless otherwise noted. If you like, I’ll keep you updated as the list comes along.
