Excited to have my first child (boy) very soon, but having a hard time to come up with a good first name.
A major reason of the struggle is probably that both my wife and I were college / grad students from [name_f]China[/name_f] when we first came to US and are not very versed in picking English names.
Our family name is short and sounds close to “shoe”. We want to pick a good name that meets the following criteria.
(1) People in US are usually not familiar with our family name. So we hope the first name will help my child better “mingle” with future friends, classmates etc.
(2) We hope the name carry some good meaning such as courage, fortitude or wisdom.
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about: [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] - ‘venerable’; [name_m]Felix[/name_m] - ‘lucky’; [name_u]Max[/name_u] - ‘greatest’; [name_m]Otto[/name_m] - ‘wealth, prosperity’; [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] ‘god is my strength’; [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] - ‘mind, spirit’; or [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - ‘olive tree’, which symbolises beauty, dignity, fruitfulness?
I like the suggestion of [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] since its meaning is related to intelligence and you’re both bright and highly educated.
other suggestions:
[name_m]Autry[/name_m] “noble strength”
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m] “strong, firm”
[name_u]Alden[/name_u] “old, wise friend”
[name_u]Barrett[/name_u] “bear strength”
[name_m]Brian[/name_m] “strong, virtuous, and honorable”
Suggesting,…
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Gareth[/name_m]
[name_m]Brendan[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
Some of the above suggestions are a little ‘out there’ in the US. For example, [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Booker[/name_m], and [name_m]Autry[/name_m] stand out as unusual. The first two posts have some pretty common names, though.
You’ve probably already googled ‘popular boy names’ but going and gleaning through the US top 200 list for the decade might aid you in your search for the perfect name.

Thank you for the great advice and recommendations from all of you.
I personally like [name_m]Felix[/name_m].
My wife has come up with [name_m]Kane[/name_m].
Moreover, we will give our first child a traditional Chinese name as his middle name to honor his cultural heritage. The Chinese middle name will embody meaning of light or brightness or brilliance. Perhaps it may be a good idea to pick a name with such meaning. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], with nickname [name_m]Luke[/name_m]?
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] Xu (sounds like “shoe”), or
[name_m]Kane[/name_m] Xu, or
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] Xu
Any insight or comment or recommendation is greatly appreciated.
[name_m]Kane[/name_m] Xu sounds the best to me.
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] Xu and [name_m]Kane[/name_m] Xu are both great! [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] Xu/[name_m]Luke[/name_m] Xu feels a bit awkward to say out loud.
