Boy name suggestions needed!

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I are due to have our first baby, sex still unknown, in early [name_f]April[/name_f] and are not coming to much of a consensus on boy names at all. If it is a girl I really like [name_u]Alma[/name_u] and [name_f]Liana[/name_f], and he hasn’t expressed any significant issues with either of those names.

[name_u]Baby[/name_u] will have two long M last names, and we need a name that generally works in [name_f]English[/name_f] and Spanish. Given the long last names we also have a preference for somewhat shorter names.

His suggestions:
[name_u]Theo[/name_u] (pronounced tay-oh in Spanish, thee-oh in English)
[name_m]Tomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Abram[/name_m] (Husband insists on Spanish ah-BRAM pronunciation)
[name_m]Mateo[/name_m]
[name_m]Diego[/name_m]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] (eh-lee-us in Spanish, ee-lie-as in English)

[name_f]My[/name_f] suggestions:
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] (feh-leeks in Spanish, fee-licks in English)
[name_m]Amado[/name_m]
[name_m]Tiago[/name_m]
[name_m]Danilo[/name_m]
[name_u]Gael[/name_u]

What other suggestions do you have?? I don’t know if any of the names on this list can end up being our compromise name!

I really like Diego/Tiago/Amado as names that [name_f]English[/name_f] speakers will be more likely to pronounce correctly!

some suggestions (i don’t speak spanish so pronunciation might be off)
[name_m]Elizeo[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]
[name_m]Maro[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Victor[/name_m]

hope this helps in some way!

[name_m]Danilo[/name_m] and [name_m]Diego[/name_m] are my favorites for you, maybe [name_m]Tiago[/name_m] too. I’m a fan of alliteration, so I could get behind [name_m]Mateo[/name_m]. All these are pronounced pretty much identically on both languages, and they’re so handsome. I love Spanish boy names!

Other suggestions:
[name_m]Iván[/name_m]- pronunciation difference but short and snappy
[name_m]Javier[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]
[name_m]Miguel[/name_m]

Congrats on your pregnancy! :sparkles:

With the names you have so far, some of them sound like the could be a little clunky sounding and tricky to say with a M-M last name, such as (Alma for the girl), [name_m]Tomas[/name_m], [name_m]Abram[/name_m], and possibly [name_m]Amado[/name_m]. I might be wrong - without knowing the exact last name it’s hard to tell - but I would consider that these might not have the best flow with all the Ms? [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] seems OK as the M is at start - and could be a very cool alliterative name.

I agree ther [name_m]Diego[/name_m] and [name_m]Tiago[/name_m] are easy to say but they’re also the most Spanish (/Portuguese) sounding names - which of course isn’t a problem - and may in fact be the goal! - but just to point out they don’t seem to have the same balance of [name_f]English[/name_f] and Spanish as the others. I would also think about [name_u]Gael[/name_u] too as it’s almost solely a girls’ name in [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking contexts - and will get “Gail” (rhyming close to “mail”) more than GAY-elle.

To me, [name_u]Theo[/name_u], [name_m]Mateo[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Felix[/name_m] & [name_m]Danilo[/name_m] are the ones I’d keep on joint list.

Otherwise (and this is from another site on Spanish/English boy names), maybe:
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m]
[name_m]Abel[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_u]Leo[/name_u]
[name_m]Rafael[/name_m] (too long?)
[name_u]Max[/name_u]
[name_m]Joaquin[/name_m]
[name_m]Marco[/name_m]
[name_m]Carlo[/name_m]
[name_u]Adan[/name_u]
[name_u]Ezra[/name_u]
[name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_m]Fabian[/name_m]
[name_m]Luis[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Gabe[/name_m]
[name_m]Gavin[/name_m]
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]

There was also [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] and [name_u]Owen[/name_u] on the list but these might be like [name_m]Diego[/name_m] and [name_m]Tiago[/name_m] but in opposite direction.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps - obviously ignore if haven’t quite hit the mark as a non-Spanish speaker.

So many great options already!

[name_m]Camilo[/name_m]
[name_u]Noah[/name_u]
[name_m]Ciro[/name_m]
[name_m]Cesar[/name_m]
[name_m]Elio[/name_m]
[name_m]Efren[/name_m]
[name_m]Saul[/name_m]
[name_u]Nico[/name_u]
[name_m]Raul[/name_m]
[name_m]Matias[/name_m]
[name_m]Bruno[/name_m]
[name_u]Cruz[/name_u]
[name_m]Lino[/name_m]
[name_u]Leo[/name_u], [name_u]Leon[/name_u]
[name_m]Carlos[/name_m]
[name_m]Luis[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m]
[name_m]Dario[/name_m]
[name_u]Milo[/name_u]
[name_m]Ruben[/name_m]
[name_m]Tadeo[/name_m]
[name_m]Izan[/name_m]
[name_m]Santos[/name_m]

Thank you for these suggestions! the next hard part is we have huge families, and so many great names (Luca/Lucas, [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Victor[/name_m], [name_m]Ivan[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_u]Leo[/name_u], [name_m]Rafael[/name_m], [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m], Marco/Marcos, [name_m]Camilo[/name_m], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_m]Matias[/name_m], Bruno…and more) have already been taken! Definitely makes the task a little more difficult.

@highhippogriff I had considered [name_m]Eliseo[/name_m], although since [name_u]Elias[/name_u] is so similar maybe we would go with that. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] I love in theory, but I don’t like the pronunciation in [name_f]English[/name_f]. We are fine with names that have different pronunciations in [name_f]English[/name_f] and Spanish, we just need to like both.

@bjoy I can’t decide if [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] with two M last names is just too MUCH alliteration. I like alliteration, but I don’t know if 3 of the same initial is going too far. [name_m]Javier[/name_m] was on our list at one point, maybe I should put that one back!

@EloiseT good point, but I think with the actual last names they work. [name_m]Abram[/name_m] may be the one that has the least flow since it actually ends in an M, but I think an M in the middle works fine. The first last name starts with a “med” sound, and the second a “mag” sound. Both have emphasis in the later, non-M parts of the name.

I have the benefit of working in education in a fairly diverse environment so I get to see lots of names test run in real like. Gael/Yael/Jael does throw native [name_f]English[/name_f] speakers at first, but the sounds are easy to learn and most people actually don’t guess “Gail” right away, even if they do hesitate. I also think we are fine with a name that is more Spanish/Portuguese in nature (I am actually part Brazilian as well).

@VEL I really like [name_m]Ciro[/name_m]! I suggested it to my husband but he is not on board. [name_m]Raul[/name_m] was also on our list at one point, but while I like the sound of the name it feels pretty dated (for what it is worth that is also my husband’s issue with [name_m]Amado[/name_m], but that is more like grandpa dated, ie ready to come back, vs [name_m]Raul[/name_m] is middle aged dated). I also really like [name_m]Elio[/name_m] and [name_m]Santos[/name_m]!

[name_u]Adrian[/name_u]
[name_m]Luis[/name_m]
[name_m]Marcel[/name_m]

Summary

[name_u]Gael[/name_u] stood out to me because my Spanish friend here in Australia has said she somewhat regrets naming her son the name because of the [name_f]Fem[/name_f] [name_f]Gail[/name_f] thing/need to educate each time and sometimes more than once but Australia has far fewer Spanish influences (more Brazilian actually!) and it sounds like where you are, it’ll be much easier to use. Good luck with it all, looks like you have several fab options!

I’ve always thought [name_m]Sergio[/name_m] was very cool but Im not sure if its perceived as dated? [name_u]Theo[/name_u] is so cute! [name_m]Thiago[/name_m] too!

+1 for Hugo. But since you don’t like it in English, Felix or Oscar perhaps.

Love Inigo and Xavier but three syllables.
