[name]Hi[/name]! I’m having a baby girl in a few months, and we’re trying to decide a name.
My husband wants a boy-ish name like [name]Charlie[/name](short for [name]Charlotte[/name]) and [name]Jamie[/name](On its own) or even [name]Joey[/name] as a nickname for [name]Joanna[/name]
I prefer the nickname [name]Lottie[/name] for [name]Charlotte[/name](Though my other daughter’s favourite book is The [name]Lottie[/name] Project) and I really like [name]Jamie[/name] and [name]Joey[/name], but I don’t want her being teased for having a boy name. And what if there’s boys in her class called [name]Charlie[/name]/[name]Jamie[/name]/[name]Joey[/name]?
Please tell me what you think!
I don’t care for boys names on girls at all. I think, for example, [name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name] is a good compromise though. Its a lot better than just putter just [name]Charlie[/name] on the birth certificate. Gives her more options when she’s older too
Also, if our girl is girly if we call her [name]Charlotte[/name] or [name]Joanna[/name], instead of [name]Charlie[/name] and [name]Joey[/name] as a nickname, her nickname can be [name]Lottie[/name] and [name]Anna[/name], can’t it?
Yes. Although I HATE boys names on girls, giving her a clearly female name with both more girly and tomboyish nn’s is fine with me. It’s a good compromise, since if she hates being called [name]Charlie[/name] or [name]Joey[/name] she can change it easily.
I loved The [name]Lottie[/name] Project! And I think maybe you could also use some unisex names, like [name]Avery[/name] and [name]Bailey[/name]. But I also don’t think she’ll be teased for having a boy’s name. [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Jamie[/name] and [name]Joanna[/name] are cute names, and [name]Joey[/name] could also be short for [name]Josephina[/name]. [name]Rickie[/name] could be short for [name]Rebecca[/name] and [name]Roderica[/name], maybe?
I hate boy names on girls, even as a nickname.
I think [name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name] is ok. My mom is [name]Jo[/name]-[name]Anne[/name] nn [name]Jo[/name] so I think [name]Jo[/name] for a little [name]Joanna[/name] would be cute. But if they are very girly please use [name]Lottie[/name] and [name]Anna[/name] as nns.
You know you don’t have to call her the same thing. [name]Charlotte[/name] won’t be confused if Mom calls her [name]Lottie[/name] and Dad calls her [name]Charlie[/name]. I knew a little boy [name]Charlie[/name] with the nn Cha-cha, but that probably won’t age well
[name]Jamie[/name] and [name]Joey[/name] feel dated. [name]Don[/name]'t care for [name]Joanna[/name]; [name]Johanna[/name] would give [name]Hanna[/name] as a nn.
Would hubby consider [name]Jamie[/name] as a nn for [name]Jamilah[/name] or [name]Jamima[/name]?
@ nat108
hubby doesn’t really care for [name]Jamie[/name], though its a combination of his parents names: [name]Ellie[/name] and [name]James[/name].
But he has said he likes [name]Jamie[/name] as a nickname, but he loves [name]Charlie[/name].
Now we’re thinking of [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Joanna[/name], and we joked we could use her initials as a nn: CJ.
But, hopefully, I’ll be able to persuade him for [name]Joanna[/name], because it is a family thing for both of us: his grandma was [name]Joanna[/name] and my mum was [name]Joanne[/name].
I don’t like boys names on girls. I knew a girl [name]Jordan[/name] in elementary school, she was constantly teased for having a boys name. I admit I was a little guilty of teasing too… but I was like 6…
I do know a couple of girl [name]Jaimie[/name]'s though and that one doesn’t seem to get teased too much, but overall, I would just avoid boy names on girls. I love [name]Lottie[/name]!
I prefer [name]Charlotte[/name] on its own or [name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Lottie[/name], but I don’t think [name]Charlie[/name] is a bad nickname either. I agree that you could each have different nicknames for her.
I love [name]Charlotte[/name], and I much prefer the nickname [name]Lottie[/name], like you. I don’t like [name]Jamie[/name] although that works on a girl. And personally I don’t really like [name]Joanna[/name]/[name]Joey[/name] either. But I have heard of girls who use the nickname [name]Joey[/name]. Here are a few other unisex names you might like:
[name]Carter[/name]
[name]Hudson[/name]
[name]Sloane[/name]
I like [name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name] and [name]Joanna[/name] nn [name]Joey[/name] far better than [name]Jamie[/name] on a girl. Female names that shorten to male nicknames are better than a male name on a female for me. Other names of the same type:
[name]Samantha[/name] nn [name]Sam[/name]/[name]Sammy[/name]
[name]Andrea[/name] nn [name]Andi[/name]
Any -belle name could nn [name]Billie[/name]
Any -ley name could nn [name]Lee[/name]
[name]Antonia[/name] nn [name]Toni[/name] (or nn [name]Annie[/name] if she’s girly)
[name]Michaela[/name] nn [name]Micky[/name]
[name]Nicole[/name]/[name]Nicola[/name] nn [name]Nikki[/name]
[name]Madeleine[/name] nn [name]Lenny[/name] (other names with similar sounding endings could work here too)
Of course some of these would only work with certain accents/pronunciations.
I would love the nn [name]Sam[/name] on a girl, but my husband’s aunt is called that. He hates his aunt, so we could never use it.
I don’t mind [name]Charlie[/name] and [name]Joey[/name] as nicknames for [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Joanna[/name], although I much prefer the formal names and would want to use those if it were me or my daughter. I like [name]Charlie[/name] better than [name]Joey[/name]. [name]Jamie[/name] has been used a lot as an independent name for girls and I think it’s fine.
I don’t like boys’ names on girls. However, I certainly don’t mind a girly name with a tomboyish nickname. Like others said, I think it’s a great compromise. [name]Charlotte[/name] called [name]Charlie[/name] and [name]Joanna[/name] called [name]Joey[/name] (or [name]Jo[/name]) work splendidly. I’m not a fan of [name]Jamie[/name], but it works on a girl.
Some other ideas:
[name]Josephine[/name]= [name]Jo[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name], [name]Alexandria[/name], [name]Alexis[/name]= [name]Alex[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name], [name]Georgina[/name], [name]Georgianna[/name]= [name]Georgie[/name]
[name]Renata[/name]= [name]Ren[/name]
[name]Winifred[/name]= [name]Freddie[/name]
[name]Roberta[/name]= [name]Bobbie[/name]
[name]Danielle[/name], [name]Danicka[/name]= [name]Danny[/name]
[name]Theodora[/name]= [name]Theo[/name] (though I don’t think this works as well)
[name]Eugenie[/name], [name]Regina[/name]= [name]Gene[/name]/[name]Jean[/name]
[name]Julia[/name], [name]Juliet[/name]= [name]Jules[/name]
[name]Geraldine[/name]= [name]Gerry[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name]= Auggie, [name]Gus[/name]
[name]Maxine[/name]= [name]Max[/name]
[name]Stephanie[/name]= [name]Stevie[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]= [name]Will[/name] (I don’t think this really needs a nickname)
[name]Claudia[/name]= [name]Claude[/name]
[name]Philippa[/name]= [name]Phil[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]= [name]Lou[/name]
[name]Gabrielle[/name]= [name]Gabe[/name]
[name]Andrea[/name]= [name]Andie[/name]
[name]Edwina[/name]= [name]Eddie[/name]
[name]Timothea[/name]= [name]Timmie[/name]
Some of these are probably a bit too…“old-fashioned complex” shall we say, but perhaps one of them appeals.
I agree that if he loves [name]Charlie[/name] and you love [name]Lottie[/name], there is no reason why little [name]Charlotte[/name] couldn’t be both, and maybe as she gets older she can decide which one she wants to be. I know a 3 year old named [name]Charlotte[/name] and she refuses to be called anything else, and that means no [name]Lottie[/name] or [name]Charlie[/name] not even by her parents.
I like boyish names on girls. They tend to be more professional I think, for instance a girl named [name]Reese[/name] seems more professional than a girl named [name]Sophia[/name].
