Boy names on girls

I’ve always been a fan of gender neutral names. I grew up with girls named [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_u]Brett[/name_u], [name_u]Corey[/name_u], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], and was always a little envious of their different names. Now that I’m having a little girl of my own, I’ve started looking down the same path.

I’m curious what some of your favorite (traditionally) boy names on girls are. A few I’ve heard and liked are below to give you an idea of what I’m leaning towards…

[name_u]Drew[/name_u]
[name_u]Campbell[/name_u]
[name_u]Collins[/name_u]
[name_u]Chandler[/name_u]
[name_u]Grey[/name_u]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_f]Andie[/name_f]

Any other name suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

There are dozens of other threads about stealing boy names for girls.

I dislike any boys names on girls, I know plenty of girls with boys names (the trend apparently really took off in the 1990’s where I live), but none of them loved their names. [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_f]Andie[/name_f] are the only ones I see working on a girl.

@casilda - but this user is looking for suggestions for herself, not what was suggested to others - what’s wrong with wanting to post something similar if it’s more geared towards her tastes?

I really like [name_u]Drew[/name_u] off of your list. One of my favorites has always been [name_m]Rivers[/name_m]. Here are a few more:

[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Finch[/name_u]
[name_u]Morgan[/name_u]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]
[name_u]Sam[/name_u]
[name_u]Mason[/name_u]
[name_u]Regan[/name_u]
[name_u]Stevie[/name_u]
[name_m]Davie[/name_m]
[name_u]Bobbie[/name_u]
[name_u]Jessie[/name_u]
[name_u]Walker[/name_u]
[name_u]Parker[/name_u]

She asked what some of ours are.

There are lots and lots of threads on this, too. Of course, it doesn’t help my frustration when there was an almost identical post started yesterday and it seems as though we have a post about “boy names on girls” or “unisex names” at least once a week. :-/

From your list I like [name_u]Drew[/name_u], [name_u]Grey[/name_u], and [name_u]August[/name_u].

Most of your names sound like surnames. You might like [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], [name_u]Wallis[/name_u], or [name_u]Ellison[/name_u].

My personal favorites of this trend are [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], and [name_u]Hayden[/name_u].

I agree that the subject should stop coming up, or at least have more creative titles, but to each’s own.

Like most berries I don’t like when people give girls traditionally boy names. There are only a few unisex names that I like for both genders: [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], but only as a nickname for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m].

I think it is a little rude to tell someone not to create a post. The boys forum has plenty of repeats too. You wouldn’t tell someone asking for biblical boy names to search for past forums. Also, implying that names are being “stolen” suggests that you may simply dislike unisex names, which is fine. There is no need to be mean.

The OP asked for our favorites. If you don’t like any then just don’t comment. Its unnecessary to announce you hate this every time the subject comes up. Some people do like this trend and nameberry has a whole section for unisex names, so we are welcome here too. Too bad there isn’t a unisex name forum so we could talk about gender swapping names and you wouldn’t have to even read it (or participate).

I’m sorry if you find me using the word stolen as being mean. However, is it really any less mean to be mean to people who are apparently mean?

And if I saw two posts about biblical boy names in the same forum within 24 hours of each other, I’d probably say something, yes.

I never said people who like unisex names aren’t welcome. If that’s what you got from my post, I truly apologize but like my words said, I was just telling the OP that there are other threads out there about this very subject. If she said, “here’s my list, what do you think?” That would be different but just asking what our favorites are? Like I said before, there are tons of posts already floating around.

Sorry for getting diffensive. My “you” was meant in general for people who always comment on these types of posts about how much they hate this trend and how all these names are awful for girls and same old same old. I wasn’t calling out anyone specific. I just think if someone doesn’t it like it he or she should just not comment (or even read it if it upsets them that much).

Also sorry for hijacking your post OP. I also like a pp suggestion of [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]Quinn[/name_u].

The only unisex names I am really into are [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], and [name_u]Rory[/name_u] (all for girls… maybe [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] on a boy). I do like [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], but only that spelling on a boy. I also strongly advocate [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Whitney[/name_u], etc going back to the boys. They are so handsome.

The only ones I will strongly advocate against, though, are -son names on girls. I just really don’t get it. They literally mean “son of —”. It baffles me. Also, names that are not even remotely considered unisex. Like [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_m]Jacob[/name_m]. We have enough options there for unisex, let’s stop shifting :stuck_out_tongue: lol.

[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: [name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to add that the only [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] I know is a 30 year old man. It is just a masculine name to me.

She created this thread and specifically asked for our favorites because she wants ideas for herself, since she’s having a girl and she is interested in this style of names. That was made quite clear in her original post. It’s easier to simply make a new thread asking for suggestions than it is to scour every “boys names on girls” thread here and pick through all of the arguments and criticism looking for ideas. There’s nothing wrong with this thread, this isn’t a place to argue and nitpick and attack each other. If you can’t give ideas like she asked it’s probably best if you simply ignore it and move along.

OP, I’m not sure if mine are quite your style, but some of my favorite unisex (from my own personal standpoint) names are:

[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_m]Cyprus[/name_m]/[name_f]Cypress[/name_f]
[name_u]Harbor[/name_u]
[name_m]Chace[/name_m]
[name_m]Collier[/name_m]
[name_f]Arbor[/name_f]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_m]Sean[/name_m]
[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]
[name_u]Seneca[/name_u]
[name_u]Noah[/name_u]/[name_f]Noa[/name_f]

My favorite boy names on girls are either really more unisex than boy (eg, surnames and place names – what makes a place or a last name more boy than girl, when you really think about it?), or, if truly a boy name, as a nickname for a female name (eg, [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is OK, or [name_u]Billie[/name_u] for [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]).

Place names to think about:
[name_f]Annesley[/name_f]
Madrid
[name_u]Holland[/name_u]
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
[name_u]Dallas[/name_u]
I’d also suggest thinking if any places that are important to you would make a good baby name.

You could also use a surname, but personally, I only really like these when they have a meaning to the parents. Can you mine your own family tree to find a last name that would work as a girl name? Or, use the last (or maybe first) name of an artist or writer you admire?
For instance:
[name_u]Alcott[/name_u]
[name_u]Auden[/name_u]
[name_u]Chandler[/name_u]
[name_f]Bronte[/name_f]
[name_m]Ives[/name_m]
Cassatt

I also like the suggestion for names that are truly used for boys and girls. [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is my favorite of those. A few other nature names are traditionally girl names or unisex, but don’t sound TOO girly:
[name_f]Briar[/name_f]
[name_f]Briony[/name_f]
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f]
[name_u]Linden[/name_u]
[name_f]Arbor[/name_f]
[name_f]Maple[/name_f]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
