Boy names, too feminine?

I’ve noticed that Americans tend to pick more masculine names for boys than some European names I am familiar with for boys. Please comment with explinations for which names you think are too feminine for a boy (that would grow up in [name]America[/name]).

Examples:
[name]Florian[/name]
[name]Fabian[/name]
[name]Sylvian[/name]
[name]Johannes[/name]
[name]Mischa[/name]
[name]Jannis[/name] (yah- nis) - My american friend think that people would call him [name]Janice[/name].
[name]Sascha[/name]

[name]Ashley[/name]
[name]Madison[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Yves[/name]

For my taste and my style, all of the names you listed I think are very feminine for a boy. [name]Fabian[/name] being the only exception.

I think they’re all fine. They’re all legitimate boys names so there shouldn’t be an issue. I love [name]Sascha[/name], [name]Florian[/name] and [name]Sylvain[/name].

Although some of these name might have pronunciation issues in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name], I wouldn’t think any of them would be too feminine.

[name]Sascha[/name] and [name]Mischa[/name] I think might be hard for a boy to live with, but I don’t think any of your names would be too difficult. They just might require a little explanation

I agree with you alyssa. But I do think [name]Sasha[/name] is cute for a boy.

[name]Florian[/name] - I’ve heard this used as a male name in a book.
[name]Fabian[/name] - Always heard it on a boy, this one is very masculine to me
[name]Sylvian[/name] - I think people might think it’s very close to [name]Sylvia[/name] or [name]Sylvie[/name]
[name]Johannes[/name] - [name]Johanna[/name]
[name]Mischa[/name] - I know it’s a boy name, but I have only ever heard of it used on girls in [name]America[/name]
[name]Jannis[/name] (yah-nis) - I really like the way that it looks, but I agree that people might try to pronounce it [name]Janice[/name].
[name]Sascha[/name] - Same as [name]Mischa[/name]

I think it depends on where the child will be raised. I was raised in a very diverse area with people from all over the world, so all those names are masculine to me.

My favorites from your list are [name]Sascha[/name] and [name]Mischa[/name] but I always assume they’re nn. On the other hand I do like them more than [name]Alexander[/name] & [name]Michael[/name], so why not use them as the fn? [name]Sacha[/name] [name]Baron[/name] [name]Cohen[/name] has brought the name to the American mainstream. I don’t know of any current male celebs named [name]Mischa[/name]

I think all of those names would be great for a boy. We can have girls named [name]Ryan[/name] and [name]Logan[/name], but we can’t have a boy named [name]Florian[/name] or [name]Mischa[/name]? Something isn’t right here.

You’re right, I don’t automatically think “masculinity” but I don’t see any problems. These are legitimate boy names, and girls are given masculine names anyways. I think they are fine! [name]Sascha[/name] is really a boys name to me even though [name]Sasha[/name] is popular for girls.

I really love softer sounding names for boys. In fact, if I were to have a son right this instant I would name him [name]Auden[/name] or [name]Sylvan[/name], I think.

As for [name]Jannis[/name] being mistaken for a [name]Janice[/name], I think that could happen for so many names that it’s not even really a valid concern. My name got mispronounced quite frequently as a child-you just correct the person politely and move on:)

For my taste, yes, the names you provided are very feminine. Southern men in the US tend to have feminine names, as well- I know an [name]Ashley[/name], [name]Lynn[/name], [name]Leslie[/name], [name]Simone[/name], [name]Kelly[/name], etc. I know some of these names originated as male, but in society today they are predominately female.

[name]Florian[/name]- reminds me of flora, flowers
[name]Fabian[/name]- the least feminine of your names provided
[name]Sylvian[/name]- sounds like [name]Sylvia[/name]
[name]Johannes[/name]- sounds like [name]Joanna[/name]
[name]Mischa[/name]- [name]Mischa[/name] [name]Barton[/name] is a female actress, and I know 2 female Mischas personally
[name]Jannis[/name] (yah- nis) - [name]Janice[/name] is the first thing I thought of
[name]Sascha[/name]- I know of 3 female [name]Sasha[/name]/Saschas in my town

I think [name]Fabian[/name] would be fine, as well as [name]Johannes[/name] (I’m guessing it would be [name]YO[/name]-hon-es). [name]Mischa[/name] and [name]Sasha[/name] would be tough in the states, and the others are middle ground, to me.

In my opinion yes they are too feminine sounding.
A name that immediately popped in my head whilst reading your list was [name]Roscoe[/name] (for some reason)
I think the only obvious male sounding name is [name]Fabian[/name].

[name]Florian[/name] - that’s really a standard [name]German[/name] boys’ name in my book
[name]Fabian[/name] - same here. Though I do know one nine-year-old called [name]Fabio[/name].
[name]Sylvian[/name] - never heard of this name before. I do know a Sylvio though.
[name]Johannes[/name] - yo-HAH-nes would be the correct pronunciation. Though People will probably say [name]JO[/name]-hanes.
[name]Mischa[/name] - I only know [name]Micha[/name] short for [name]Michael[/name].
[name]Jannis[/name] - You could spell it [name]Yannis[/name].
[name]Sascha[/name] - again pretty common where I live.

Not one of these names is feminine associated in my book. But Americans might think differently.

[name]Mischa[/name] and [name]Sascha[/name] really jump out at me as feminine. [name]Just[/name] because they are used on girls.

This. And for what it’s worth, I’ve known of males named [name]Florian[/name], [name]Fabian[/name], [name]Johannes[/name] (it’s a family name), [name]Misha[/name], and [name]Sascha[/name].

I posted earlier, but as for the specific names…
[name]Florian[/name] - I’m not a huge fan of the name but it’s definitely a boy’s name.
[name]Fabian[/name] - I feel the same way about this name as [name]Florian[/name].
[name]Sylvian[/name] - The “n” sound is soft, so it does seem a little too similar to [name]Sylvia[/name]. But, like most names, I think it would be fine to just simply correct people and go on with it.
[name]Johannes[/name] - definitely a boy’s name.
[name]Mischa[/name] - also a boy’s name.
[name]Jannis[/name] - This is the one I would be most concerned about. It does look like [name]Janice[/name].
[name]Sascha[/name] - This probably wouldn’t be a concern a few years ago, but people probably think of [name]Sasha[/name] [name]Obama[/name]. But I do like it for both a boy and girl.

[name]Florian[/name]: the female [name]Florence[/name] is gaining popularity, but other that it’s a masculine name.
[name]Fabian[/name]: masculine.
[name]Sylvian[/name]: sounds similar to [name]Sylvie[/name] or [name]Sylvia[/name], which are considered girl names.
[name]Johannes[/name]: masculine.
[name]Mischa[/name]: very feminine in U.S.
[name]Jannis[/name] (yah- nis): your American friend is right, people would call hime [name]Janice[/name]
[name]Sascha[/name]: [name]Sasha[/name] is slightly feminine, but I prefer it as a boy’s name as opposed to a girl’s name.
