Boy Names

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] All,
Very new to this site and also very early in my pregnancy with this little peanut, but already thinking about names. No idea of gender yet, but boy names seem a little easier (our girl’s name list is longer!).

I’d love some input/opinions on our Top 5:
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_m]Woodrow[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]

Our last name is 2 syllables, the 2nd syllable is “ward”.

Great list! Here’s how I’d rank them:

[name_u]August[/name_u] – [name_u]Love[/name_u]!
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] – A name I like a lot, but do you live in the U.S.? This one could be associated with last year’s hurricane, especially depending on where you live.
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] – Repetitive with your surname.
[name_m]Woodrow[/name_m] – Lots of W’s, R’s and D’s with your surname. Could make this difficult to say…

They are my concerns with [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and [name_m]Woodrow[/name_m] as well…
In Australia, but still a good point about [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], and one I hadn’t considered. Definitely still got a lot of media attention here as well.

They’re all pleasant and not overly common.

Nice name list. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the name [name_m]Rhett[/name_m].

From favorite to least favorite:
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] - Absolutely love this name, it’s so adorable! It also has nice nicknames and would age well
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] - Handsome name that’s unique + has the cool nickname [name_m]Shep[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u] - Also handsome! Not a huge fan of nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u] though
[name_m]Woodrow[/name_m] - I love unusual names but this one just doesn’t feel very name-like to me? And nickname [name_m]Woody[/name_m] makes me think of [name_m]Toy[/name_m] [name_u]Story[/name_u] right away. It’d make a cool middle name though
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m] - Not a huge fan of [name_m]Rhett[/name_m] as a full name, I dislike how it has no nicknames and it lacks the character your other names have, at least to me.

I agree that [name_m]Woodrow[/name_m] and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] may clash with your surname. As a fellow Aussie I can say that [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] has become quite popular over the last few years, and I have met 5 under 3! This might also sway you, given the other names on your list are quite uncommon.

My favourite on your list is [name_u]August[/name_u]. So handsome and versatile (a strong name with a gentle sound).

I have always adored the name [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]; that would be my first choice from your list, all other associations aside. Second choice [name_u]August[/name_u].

[name_m]Woodrow[/name_m] is a pretty cool name for kid, I always appreciate reading new/unique type names, as I’ve never met a [name_m]Woodrow[/name_m] before.
My suggestion would be to use it as a middle name so it doesn’t clash with your last name?

[name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Woodrow[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_m]Woodrow[/name_m]

[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] was our first love on this list, and we always intended to use it if we had another boy. We even considered it for our first born the week before he was born, but had had another named picked for him for years, and it suits him to a tee!
This little peanut has well and truly taken it’s time though and it’s now over 3yrs since we started trying so to say we’re excited is an understatement!
[name_m]Woodrow[/name_m]/[name_m]Woody[/name_m] came a close 2nd to [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], but now that we’re finally expecting I’m second guessing it a lot.

Our [name_m]Son[/name_m] has an occupation/surname name which is why we are leaning towards [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] (and we adore the nn [name_m]Shep[/name_m]), but are really torn about it not flowing well with our surname.
I adore [name_u]August[/name_u], Hubby isn’t sold. He’s not a huge fan of [name_m]Rhett[/name_m] either.
We still have ages to decide- thanks so much for everyone’s advice so far!

[name_m]Harvey[/name_m]: has a retro, cowboy feel to it.
[name_m]Woodrow[/name_m]: this is very cool, but would it inevitably lead to the nickname [name_m]Woody[/name_m]? [name_m]Rowe[/name_m] would be a nice nickname.
[name_u]August[/name_u]: easily my fave from this list. I love it on a girl too.
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]: I don’t mean to be insensitive, but this one really reminds me of the words retch or wretch. I could be pronouncing it wrong though!
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]: [name_m]Feel[/name_m] very neutral about this one - don’t love it or hate it.

Other suggestions:
[name_m]Wells[/name_m]
[name_m]Rhodes[/name_m]
[name_m]Maverick[/name_m]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]

[name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] are my favorites. I think [name_u]August[/name_u] is the best. If you like Gone with the Wind [name_m]Rhett[/name_m] is a perfect name. [name_m]Woodrow[/name_m] has too many similar letters to your last name. [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] has too much association with the hurricane and [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Weinstein.
