Boys name- capitalization question

We are considering the name DaVinci for our son. We like renaissance and Italian names. Any opinions on what works best for the capitalization. I realize that the name is properly spelled da [name]Vinci[/name], but we prefer to capitalize the first letter.

Our thoughts are: DaVinci or Davinci

Any ideas?

I think Davinci is better, it looks more like a name  I wouldn’t capitalize both letters unless you were planning on writing it Da [name]Vinci[/name]

I’m sorry, but DaVinci as a first name is too pretentious for me to take seriously. Please buy a painting instead.

Awful! You Change your name to DaVinci and see how people react to you. Poor kid. Their lives will be filled with a ba-zillion annoying conversations about their name unless they are smart enough to change it themselves first.

I 100% agree. We seem to have had an influx of trolls lately, perhaps this is another one…

I would just go with [name]Leonardo[/name].

Please don’t name your child Davinci. or any other version of it. There are plenty of cool, normal Italian names that won’t get your kid teased - [name]Leonardo[/name], [name]Raphael[/name], etc.

I agree with everyone else. The teasing potential is tremendous and he will ending up hating his name and possibly you for giving it to him. Look up names popular in the Renaissance and go from there. You are just asking for trouble by using Davinci. TBH I think more of that awful Davinci code movie than I do [name]Leonardo[/name].

I have to chime in that I agree with everybody else. It really isn’t a name, it’s a last name. If you love Italian Renaissance then maybe go with [name]Raphael[/name]. It is a little more wearable.

I love Davinci, and if you do too I wouldn’t listen to what everyone else is saying. If you were to capitalize both I’d separate it to Da [name]Vinci[/name]. The only thing I’d watch out for is the fact that da [name]Vinci[/name] means literally, of the city of [name]Vinci[/name], which if you’re not italian could be odd if you’re often around certain people or ever go to italy.

I’m a big surprised by all the hate Davinci/and other spellings/etc. are getting… I actually really like it and I’m not sure where the teasing potential would come from? I, too, think of the da [name]Vinci[/name] Code which I don’t see in a positive light, but I think the painter/scientist/mathematician is a great namesake and I don’t really understand why it’s getting such negative reactions! I would love to tell you to use it, but if the reaction is so overwhelmingly negative, I’m not sure I would use it… I wouldn’t want that much hate to be directed at my precious baby’s name. I realize someone is always going to hate any name, no matter what it is, but if there’s that much hate, I don’t think it’s a great idea. :frowning:

If you do go through with it, I think I like DaVinci the best, even though I’m usually not a fan of capitalizing a letter in the middle of a name. I’ve heard of St. [name]John[/name] or St. [name]James[/name] used as a FN, so since those are separate, I would think that you could do da [name]Vinci[/name], too. It might be a bit weird, but I like it better than all the other options…

Thanks for those who posted constructive feedback. I have to be honest. I just liked the name and didn’t expect to be called a “troll.” From now on, I will post elsewhere.

This name might be a challenge for your little guy, but we presumably all know people we like who have convinced us to like their unusual names. I grew up with a guy named [name]Sun[/name] [name]King[/name] in my class at school, and we harassed him about it for a few days when he first moved to the school, and then it just became normal. [name]Don[/name]'t be too depressed by total strangers (online!) not liking your name.
But, if you do want to go for something more straightforward, you could always try:
[name]Dante[/name]
[name]Leonardo[/name]
[name]Raphael[/name]
[name]Donatello[/name] (especially if you like the nn [name]Don[/name])
[name]Even[/name] “[name]Michelangelo[/name]” would allow your little guy to use “[name]Michael[/name]” or “[name]Mike[/name]” if he wanted to escape the exotic name, OR confess the whole thing when he was ready to be proud about having a special name.

I think it’s an interesting choice, and I don’t really understand the strong negativity towards?! I’d much rather see DaVinci and the parents have a reason for choosing the name, than parents selecting made up names with Kr8ive spellings.

DaVinci looks pretty cool to me, I wouldn’t use it and I’d be more inclined to go with [name]Leonardo[/name] but each to their own.

I mean it certainly isn’t the worst name I’ve heard on forums!

I have to agree with several of the last people who posted. I think DaVinci actually would be a neat name. Why not? At least it has meaning and a great namesake. It’s better than a lot of names I hear! It’s definitely not the worst name I’ve ever heard.

I say go for it if you love it. I’m sorry for all this negativity and the fact that you were called a troll for liking a unique name. Everyone’s not usually this bad, but we’ve had several trolls over the last few days.

Again, I’d love to apologize for everyone calling you a troll. I’m sure some of them like weird names and wouldn’t appreciate being called names.

Again, [name]Love[/name] DaVinci, very cool name and awesome namesake.

I’ve already apologized via PM. I shouldn’t have speculated publicly. The sheer amount of trolls this week has made me really sensitive to the forums, but I know I was wrong.

I stand by my comment that it isn’t a good name, though. I actually like the sound, but I can imagine him introducing himself to people and the reaction being “What, like the artist?”. That’s a lot to live up to for a little boy. Also, what if he isn’t good at art, or painting? He’d be the subject of mockery because of it.
Middle names are fair game, but I don’t think its suitable as a first name.

I agree with ashthedreamer and dantea. It is a beautiful name. I’m also very surprised by the amount of negativity. But I think you should use the name! I would love to meet a little Davinci/DaVinci. (I prefer the second spelling. It breaks up the name nicely to me.) I wouldn’t think it’s weird, I would think, “Wow! His parents must be awesome!” Good luck!

I’m so sorry to see that people were so rude to you. While I don’t begrudge anyone for giving their opinion, it’s difficult to understand why it’s so hard to have some tact, even if you are posting knowing full well the two of you will never meet in person. I don’t mind Davinci and the main reason I love this site is that it introduces new names and fresh outlooks, particularly in the blogs. If everyone sighed over the same ten historic names, this world would be pretty boring.
hugs

I actually really like the name. It gives the lil man a real positive role model rather than been named after some jumped football star who earns far too much money than he has sense for. By football i obviously mean “soccer” for American bloggers! It is your son and should name him how you want.
