Boys name challenge!

Okay berries :cherries:, this is a bit of an unusual one but here it goes…

TTC number 2 and if baby is a boy I would love to honour my late grandfather’s name in some way. The only thing is, I’m finding it really difficult to come up with something we like.

We are Scottish and his name was very Scottish.

:scotland: Douglas George Armstrong Matthews :brown_heart:

Please can you help me come up with something? It doesn’t have to be an exact name. For example, it could be an anagram, a nickname name, a combination of more than one name etc etc. He was also in the Army for many years so I’d be open to names with meanings such as soldier or warrier too.

I don’t like Doug or Dougie (in Scotland this is pronounced Doogie!!) and also my cousin is Mathew (nn Matty) so I’d steer clear of that as a first. The best I could come up with is Seth (one letter from each of his names) but hubby not impressed  George is cute but maybe a bit safe for us.

One of the middle names would definitely be James, to honour my husband’s grandfather.

Told you it was a strange one, but hopefully some of you are up for a challenge

We are here for the name creativity :ok_hand:t2: Your late grandfather had a lot of names to work with

Douglas

River names could honour Douglas as this comes from ‘dubh’ meaning dark and ‘glais’ meaning water/river. Ideas:
River
Clyde
Cooper
Dacre
Beck
Arron
Alton
Brooks
Irving (meaning ‘green water’ - glais is from glas which means grey, green)
Maxwell
Raeburn
Rio
Weldon
Wells

Sharing the meaning ‘dark’
Dunstan
Mel

Sharing the ‘las’ ending:
Atlas
Milas (bonus possible soldier meaning)
Silas, Cylas, Atlas
Solas
Tallas

George

Geo :yellow_heart:

(Other) names related to the meaning of ‘earth’:

Ajax
Enki
Geb
Jordanes (bonus river association, also making me think of Jordan and Geordi)

Also containing ‘geo’: Sergeo & Spurgeon

Armstrong

Some lovely ‘ar’ names:
Armand
Armas
Amel (of different etymology but contains ‘mel = dark’
Arnar (bonus warrior meaning)
Arrow (ditto)
Arrigo
Artan
Arthur, Artie, Arto
Artem (:bow_and_arrow: )
Artemas (also sharing Matthew’s meaning of ‘gift’)

Matthews

The biblical Matthew was also called Levi

Other names sharing the meaning ‘gift’:

Damiri
Isidore
Jesse
Tad, Taddeo
Liodor (one of my favourites!)
Theodore
Zebedee

Using your grandfather’s first & middle initials:
Dagney / Dagny
(And the whole caboodle should you have a girl:
Dagmar)

Using MAD:
Maddox
Adam

I hope these inspire some middles, if not firsts!

Oh my goodness these are brilliant! I love the river name idea, and the ‘ar’ names…especially [name_u]Artie[/name_u].

[name_u]Levi[/name_u] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] are lovely. I also love [name_u]Maddox[/name_u]. Thank you so much!

Wow these are so creative! This group is great :clap:t4:

[name_u]Rio[/name_u] is beautiful, I also really like [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] and [name_u]Dash[/name_u] but I know my husband will disagree. Lots to consider, thank you!

This is interesting! I’m not keen on [name_m]Dougray[/name_m] but I do like [name_u]Gray[/name_u]. The only thing is our surname sounds like a colour so it might be a bit much when putting the 2 together. Thank you!

@EdgeOfTheMeadow @Greyblue I have just looked into [name_u]Rio[/name_u], it is Spanish for river. [name_f]My[/name_f] grandparents lived in Spain for a long time. [name_u]Love[/name_u] this!

I’m going to aim for Gaelic/Scottish feel without a super direct connection or I might mix and match.

Here goes!

[name_m]Duncan[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m] (you get the initial D sound without Douglas)
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m]
[name_m]Alasdair[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m] (“defender of men” definitely ties in with the soldier aspect)

[name_m]Armstrong[/name_m] [name_m]Conall[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Alasdair[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Conall[/name_m]
[name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]
Fionnlagh (Finley) [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Innes[/name_m] [name_u]George[/name_u] [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m]

Hopefully these help!

Sorry for any repeats

[name_u]Ames[/name_u]
[name_u]Amos[/name_u]
[name_m]Angus[/name_m] (sort of combines [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m] and Douglas)
[name_m]Duncan[/name_m]
[name_m]Gregory[/name_m]
[name_m]Huey[/name_m]
[name_m]Mattheo[/name_m] (could use [name_m]Teo[/name_m] or [name_u]Theo[/name_u] as a nickname instead of Matt/Matty)
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_u]Sterling[/name_u] (reminds me of [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m] for some reason)
