Boys names baffling me and ze missus

My wife and I have just found out that she is pregnant with our first child.

[name]Even[/name] before we got to this point, when we have discussed potential names in the past, we have always more easily become enamored with girls’ names than boys’ names, to the point that we’re already pretty certain on the two names we’ll be choosing from if our little one turns out to be a girl.

Boy names are a completely different story! It seems that we’re both generally harder on boy names, and she may be even harder on them than I am. Complicating things a bit are the fact that, if it is a boy, I’ll want to be continuing a family tradition where a first-born boy inherits their father’s name as a middle name. So my dad’s middle is my grandfather’s first, my middle is my dad’s first, etc. – so any potential first-boy we have will be given the middle name [name]Adrian[/name] (that’s me). This immediately knocks one of the names my wife and I can agree on for a first name, [name]Shea[/name], off of the list because of the repetitive A-sound it would cause. She also likes the name [name]Cameron[/name], but that sounds a bit too rhyme-y with the mn [name]Adrian[/name].

We like the name [name]Charles[/name] (nn [name]Charlie[/name]). We also like the name [name]Shawn[/name] – I know that the more classic (and possibly ā€œcorrectā€) spelling of [name]Sean[/name] is more popular around here, but we both agree on not liking that spelling a whole lot for some reason. I also know that some people say this is the more feminine spelling of the name, but every [name]Shawn[/name] I’ve ever known (save for the gymnast [name]Shawn[/name] [name]Johnson[/name]) was male, so I don’t totally get that. In any case, these are the only two we’ve been able to agree should at least be considered. [name]Shawn[/name] appears to be in the lead for her as of right now, though. I also liked the name [name]Jonah[/name], but she considered it ā€œtoo religious-soundingā€ – and proceeded to sing some song about [name]Jonah[/name] and the Whale for two minute to make her point. :stuck_out_tongue:

In any case… um, help?

I really love [name]Charles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]! It is very distinguished sounding. I think [name]Charlie[/name] is sooooo cute on a little boy. I also think [name]Shawn[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] is nice. I actuallly don’t like [name]Jonah[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]. It seems hard to say. So…my vote is [name]Charles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name].

What about [name]Seamus[/name]? [name]Seamus[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] doesn’t sound bad at all, and you could call him [name]Shea[/name] as a nn.

[name]Chester[/name]
[name]Fletcher[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]
[name]Mitchell[/name]
[name]Richard[/name]
[name]Jonas[/name]
[name]Corey[/name]
[name]Chadwick[/name]/[name]Chad[/name]

Congratulations!!

What are your 2 girls names if you feel like sharing? [name]May[/name] give me a better idea of your style although I know boy and girl name styles can be very different! I also love the idea of carrying on your family addition but I agree that it definitely knocks [name]Cameron[/name] off the list, and probably [name]Shea[/name] too, though I don’t find that one as much of a problem with [name]Adrian[/name] as [name]Cameron[/name] is, and I think [name]Shea[/name] is a lovely name and I love that spelling!

So I can’t quite pin point your style, how would you describe it? [name]How[/name] would your wife describe hers? It’s just that [name]Shea[/name], [name]Cameron[/name], [name]Charles[/name], [name]Shawn[/name] and [name]Jonah[/name] are all over the place to me lol.

I absolutely adore [name]Charles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name], I think that’s really handsome. This is definitely my first choice so far. I like [name]Jonah[/name] too but get your wifes concerns and also I don’t think it sounds the best with [name]Adrian[/name] due to the ā€œaā€ at the end of [name]Jonah[/name] and beginning of [name]Adrian[/name].

I’m not really a fan of [name]Shawn[/name] however you spell it, my ex spelled it [name]Shaun[/name] which to me is a less awkward looking spelling than [name]Shawn[/name] but avoids the [name]Sean[/name] you don’t like. There’s just something ā€œblahā€ about the name to me I’m sorry, it’s definitely not terrible or anything though just not my cup of tea. [name]Shawn[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] sounds perfectly fine though.

I’m happy to make some suggestions but I feel they’ll also be a bit all over the place until I can pin down what exactly you’re looking for in a name first.

Here’s 1 or 2 based on your current list though:

[name]Shawn[/name] - [name]Quinn[/name], [name]Finn[/name], [name]Finley[/name], [name]Rafferty[/name], [name]Declan[/name], [name]Jack[/name], [name]Ryan[/name], [name]Liam[/name], [name]Rory[/name], [name]Evan[/name], [name]Blake[/name], [name]Owen[/name], [name]Ronan[/name], [name]Gareth[/name], [name]Wyatt[/name], [name]Ethan[/name], [name]Rhys[/name], [name]Dylan[/name], LewisEllis, [name]Toby[/name]
[name]Charles[/name] - [name]John[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]Samuel[/name], [name]James[/name], [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Francis[/name], [name]Frank[/name], [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Eames[/name], [name]Lucas[/name], [name]Oscar[/name], [name]George[/name], [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Leon[/name], [name]Archer[/name], [name]Nathaniel[/name], [name]Julian[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name], [name]Barnaby[/name], [name]Rupert[/name], [name]Tobias[/name], [name]Xavier[/name]
[name]Jonah[/name] - [name]Jonas[/name], [name]Noah[/name], [name]Eli[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Jude[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Asher[/name], [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Harlan[/name], [name]Simon[/name], [name]Reuben[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], [name]Lennox[/name], [name]Jett[/name], [name]Axel[/name], [name]Hunter[/name], [name]Lincoln[/name], [name]Otto[/name],

Anything in there at all?? Good luck!

I’ve known 4 female Shawns and zero male. J/s. I agree [name]Shea[/name] and [name]Cameron[/name] don’t work. I like [name]Charles[/name] a lot. I would avoid any firsts ending with a. They’ll blend right into the a in [name]Adrian[/name]. I would also avoid names with the same syllables and stressed syllable as [name]Adrian[/name] (3/1), and most names ending in -n.

It would help to know the syllables, stress and starting/ ending letters of yr surname.

These might work:

[name]Thomas[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Clive[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Philip[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]William[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Noel[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Beckett[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Archer[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Hunter[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Joseph[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Ezekiel[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Seth[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Rhett[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Bennett[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]

I really like [name]Charles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] and [name]Shawn[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] (I prefer the more classic spelling of [name]Sean[/name] though. I also agree that [name]Shawn[/name] is not feminine, and it kind of baffles me that people would say it is.) I think [name]Shea[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] works fine, but I also have a habit of pausing in between names so they don’t run together.

I also like:

[name]Thomas[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Micah[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Miles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Giles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Timothy[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]

[name]Charles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] gets my vote

[name]Peter[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Philip[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Lucas[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Henry[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Marcus[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Patrick[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]

My guess is that my wife would say it sounds ā€œtoo Irishā€ to go with our last name, which is decidedly Hispanic. I do really like [name]Owen[/name] from your list, but we have one in the family already (of course).

The girls names are [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name] (either one with mn [name]Elizabeth[/name], which is a naming tradition from her side for first-born girls).

So I can’t quite pin point your style, how would you describe it? How would your wife describe hers? It’s just that Shea, Cameron, Charles, Shawn and Jonah are all over the place to me lol.

I’m not quite sure what you would call our style… in fact, you may have nailed it with ā€œall over the placeā€ since we are two all-over-the-place kinds of people! In general, I think we both want to strike a balance of not being too common, but also not being too out-there. I guess the fact that we don’t have a particular style is part of our problem! I can say that we both liked [name]Nicholas[/name], but she didn’t ā€œlike it enoughā€ā€¦ she liked [name]Micah[/name], but feared that the kid ā€œwouldn’t be taken seriouslyā€ (not quite sure why)… and she liked [name]Tristan[/name], but I didn’t like it and it’s (again) too rhyme-y with the mn [name]Adrian[/name] anyway. She also likes [name]David[/name] (which is her dad’s name), but I know waaaaaay too many Davids and Daves, so I just can’t do it. If we ever had a second boy, though, I’d be good with bringing the name [name]Shea[/name] back and going with something like [name]Shea[/name] [name]David[/name].

From the lists you tossed out, I do like [name]Quinn[/name], [name]James[/name], [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Noah[/name], and [name]Xavier[/name]. I know she’s not keen on [name]Henry[/name], because it’s too ā€œold manā€ for her (even though I keep trying to convince her that Old [name]Man[/name] is in again, haha). I might see what [name]Quinn[/name]—there’s a ā€œquā€ sound in our last name that it might sound good with. I think [name]James[/name] and [name]Daniel[/name] had actually come up at one point… not sure why it fell off. Maybe she thought they were too common, I’m not sure. I’m going to bring it up again, though. I especially like [name]Daniel[/name] out of those two, actually. My guess is that she would also toss out [name]Noah[/name] as ā€œtoo religiousā€ā€¦ and we already have an [name]Xavier[/name] in the family as well. My family needs to stop taking all the good names. :stuck_out_tongue:

I find that so interesting, because I’ve heard that from others as well, but we’ve had the exact opposite experience! D’oh. I really like [name]Isaac[/name] from your list, BTW. I also kinda like [name]Bennett[/name], which reminds me of another one I really liked, [name]Benjamin[/name], that she was also not too keen on, mostly because she wasn’t a fan of the nn [name]Benny[/name]. That was a while ago, though, so I might give her the chance to shoot it down again.

In general it seems like you are all really digging [name]Charles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]–I appreciate the feedback on that one.

I tried to sneak this one in (being a huge [name]Star[/name] Wars fan, haha) and she shot it down because she had a cat named [name]Lucas[/name]!

I’ve never met a female [name]Shawn[/name] either. [name]Shawna[/name] yes! several.

[name]Charles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] is lovely! I have never met a female [name]Shawn[/name], I never even knew I could be a girls name.

Hmmm. These are kind of all over the place, but maybe something will resonate. [name]How[/name] about:
[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Ethan[/name]
[name]Calvin[/name]
[name]Harlan[/name]
[name]Lionel[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Beckett[/name]
[name]Diego[/name]
[name]Phineas[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Justin[/name]
[name]Kale[/name]
[name]Noe[/name]
[name]Robert[/name]
[name]Oisin[/name]
[name]Wallace[/name]

That sounds like a very special tradition in your family!

[name]Charles[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] is a VERY handsome name. I absolutely love it!

My second choice would be [name]Shawn[/name] [name]Adrian[/name]. I like it very much. The flow is fine.

Either [name]Charles[/name] or [name]Shawn[/name] would make for a fine middle name for your future grandson!
