I am absolutely baffled by the trend for naming girls boys names. I find it unspeakably unattractive. To me names such as;
Jasper
Emerson
Cooper
Maxwell
Riley
Luca
Jaden(and all it’s variations)
Finn
Quinn
Avery
Aubrey
Blake
Leighton
Hunter
Are all 100% boy. It makes me wince seeing girls with these names.
Can anyone enlighten me as to why this is such a prevalent trend? Does anyone agree?
I completely agree, lol! [name]Avery[/name] is on my top 10 for boys, as is [name]Bailey[/name], and I adore [name]Emerson[/name], [name]Aubrey[/name], [name]Finn[/name], [name]Maxwell[/name], and [name]Leighton[/name] on boys, too. Some of them I can sort of see the appeal of, like [name]Hadley[/name], [name]Harper[/name], [name]Harlow[/name], [name]Morgan[/name], [name]Addison[/name], [name]Brinley[/name], etc., but I would never use them. I’ve heard [name]Quinn[/name] so much on girls that I think it makes an okay-ish MN for a girl, but it’s still way too masculine for a FN, imo.
I don’t understand the trend, but I honestly don’t think it’s going anywhere. Especially in my state. Ugh, there are unisex names on girls all over the place here.
I’m in the uk so the trend hasn’t really had the same impact in children I have actually met. But I see it all the time on nameberry and it shocks me everytime.
Another one I forgot is [name]Bryn[/name]. I think because I’m actually Welsh I find it even more infuriating that it’s used as a girls name in the US!
The day I’ll accept the boys names on girls is the day [name]Isabelle[/name] becomes a unisex name!
It kind of annoys me, it can feel very trendy and [name]OTT[/name] at times. But what annoys me the most is when people drop a name as a choice for a boy solely because it’s caught on for girls. I mean, if you like [name]Aubrey[/name] on a boy, use it on a boy - you would be the only person stopping yourself from doing so, not all the people who named their daughters [name]Aubrey[/name].
That out of the way, I don’t mind unisex names on girls or boys, because… well… they are, by definition, unisex? lol I say this for unisex names, however, not “boy names on girls”.
I’ll tell you something interesting, though - in the UK I saw a birth announcement for a boy called [name]Artemis[/name]. Probably because of the [name]Artemis[/name] Fowl series, but still.
[name]Ah[/name], [name]Bryn[/name] just kills me, too! I knew a guy named [name]Bryn[/name] in high school (he was actually sort of a hunk, lol), and I have loved [name]Bryn[/name] on a boy for YEARS… I just don’t understand why it’s considered so awesome for a girl! And a good part of my ancestry comes from [name]Wales[/name], too, so I would love to use that as a nod to my history, but everyone would see it as a girls’ name now, and I really don’t want to shove it into the MN spot.
[name]Artemis[/name] on a boy?! That’s just awful! and makes me think the parents are none too bright!
I’d definitely still use the names I listed above on a boy, regardless of how much it had caught on for girls, parents of boys need to fight back!
I find boys names on girls really unattractive. [name]Don[/name]'t understand the trend at all.
I did notice, by the way, that [name]Avery[/name], [name]Blake[/name], [name]Luca[/name], and other such names moved up on the SSA charts for boys despite usage by girls. So that’s good!

It makes me irrationally angry when I see [name]Remy[/name] on a girl. It’s such a masculine name up there with [name]George[/name] or [name]Robert[/name], why do people here use it for girls!?
Ugh, I hate the trend too. I just find it annoying because 1. the parents are trying too hard to be different [name]IMO[/name] and 2. it causes people to think they can’t use the name on boys anymore, so the name quickly rises for girls and falls for boys. [name]One[/name] name I’m irrationally angry about is [name]Elliott[/name]. Ok, I get that there’s an “el” sound and the whole “elle/ella” trend is big, but there are TONS of girl names that start or end with the el sound if you want to nn her [name]Ellie[/name]! Or just name her [name]Ellie[/name]! I went to school with a girl who was named just [name]Ellie[/name]. But I’ve seen so many people say “I’ve seen it on girl lists and heard it once on a girl so I can’t use it on a boy”. Well, that’s how it becomes a girl name.
There are very few I actually like better on a girl. [name]Leighton[/name] is one of them. I think it’s partially because of [name]Leighton[/name] Meester and because I feel like the “[name]Leigh[/name]” spelling is feminine. I’ve also seen it spelled [name]Leyton[/name] which looks more masculine to me but I still like it on a girl. But that’s a rare exception!
Funny thing I’ve noticed - some of my favorite actresses have boy names - [name]Blake[/name] Lively, [name]Leighton[/name] Meester, [name]Evan[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] [name]Wood[/name], [name]Spencer[/name] Grammar, aaand I can’t remember who else. But even though I like them as actresses, I still like their names (except [name]Leighton[/name]) on boys, especially [name]Blake[/name]! [name]Just[/name] something odd I noticed.
Yes to all of this. Except I didn’t go to school with anyone named [name]Ellie[/name]. But yeah, the [name]Elliot[/name]/[name]Elliott[/name] thing drives me up a wall, as does people’s hesitancy to use a name just because they see it on girls lists. If we want boys names to be boys, then parents of boys need to keep on using them.
Yeah, I do find that really annoying. I met a poor girl named [name]Coleman[/name] today…I don’t really mind [name]Quinn[/name], [name]Avery[/name], [name]Aubrey[/name] or [name]Leighton[/name] on a girl. The rest are downright awful. My brother’s name is [name]Ellery[/name], and now that’s kind of a girls name too. It’s quite weird.
I HATE IT!!! I strongly hope it never catches over here in the UK, I think I’d cry being a teacher and all. I think I’d just rename those children in my class, lol.
I know of female [name]Jaden[/name]'s and [name]Bailey[/name]'s but nowhere near the number to out do the boy’s, which is good. Otherwise I’ve only ever seen [name]Finleigh[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Darcy[/name], [name]Brogan[/name], Mad(d)ison and [name]Harley[/name], and I know of another person who is considering [name]Rowan[/name] for a little girl too.
I have a list of guilty pleasures for girl’s which are masculine names that I would never actually use but have a massive soft spot for; [name]Arden[/name], [name]Greer[/name], [name]Darby[/name], [name]Sutton[/name], [name]Peyton[/name] and [name]Winslet[/name]. Anything else considered “unisex” I tend to prefer on boy’s; [name]Avery[/name], [name]Aubrey[/name], [name]August[/name], [name]Harper[/name] and probably some others I’ve forgotten.
[name]Elliot[/name]/[name]Ellis[/name]/[name]Ellison[/name]/[name]Ellery[/name]/[name]Ellington[/name]/[name]Emery[/name]/[name]Emile[/name] should all stay on boy’s too!
[name]ITA[/name] with everyone! I hate this trend!
Some of the softer names, like [name]Quinn[/name] and [name]Riley[/name], I understand why parents would use them on a girl, even if I disagree and would prefer them on a boy, but what really bugs me is when I see something like [name]Cooper[/name] or [name]Carter[/name] or [name]Hunter[/name] or [name]Jasper[/name] on a girl. It’s so jarring. It makes me wonder if the parents wanted a boy instead.
There are some names I don’t like on girls, but I’m usually fine with boys names on girls. I have two sisters named [name]Jamie[/name] and [name]Christian[/name], and my name is [name]Alexis[/name]. Our brother got a masculine name, [name]Zachary[/name]. So I grew up with a unisex name and if my son had been a girl he would have been named [name]Micaiah[/name].
I wouldn’t use [name]William[/name] or [name]Richard[/name] for a girl, but [name]Quinn[/name], [name]Avery[/name], [name]Emerson[/name], [name]Leighton[/name], [name]Hunter[/name]? Sure. If I liked them.
I personally love most unisex names, and mostly on girls. Before becoming a member to this site, I didn’t even know that [name]Aubrey[/name] or [name]Madison[/name] were ever used on boys. That blows my mind. There is NOTHING boyish about those names, imo. (yes, I understand madison ends in -son. imo, that still doesn’t make it boyish) I guess it’s all about what you like, not necessarily about being different. I would never dream of naming my daughter [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Vivienne[/name], etc. Those names just don’t appeal to me.
I HATE it. It really makes people look ignorant when they say “Well is sounds like a girl name” or “I didn’t know it was a boy name” What? Information is at everyone’s fingertips, there is no excuse. Find out what the name means and where it comes from.
It really annoys me when they butcher the spelling to make it “look feminine”. [name]Just[/name] because you throw in some Y’s or extra letters doesn’t change the fact that she has a man’s name
Also sounds really silly when posters ask suggestions for feminine middle names so others know that she’s a girl. Um, if you cared so much about her not being mistaken for a boy how about you don’t give her a boy name?
And I agree, parents of boys need to stop shying away and reclaim these names. [name]Don[/name]'t let the [name]Jessica[/name] [name]Simpson[/name]-style parents take away masculine names
[QUOTE=nat108;1466657]I HATE it. It really makes people look ignorant when they say “Well is sounds like a girl name” or “I didn’t know it was a boy name” What? Information is at everyone’s fingertips, there is no excuse. Find out what the name means and where it comes from.
But not everybody cares. I personally don’t care at all what the meaning or origin of a name is. All I care about is that I and my husband love it on our future child.
A@kasie you don’t care about the origin of names as long as you like it? Really? So you’d call a son [name]Ffion[/name] (welsh girls name) just because you liked it. Or indeed,a child [name]Lucifer[/name] just because you liked it?
Wow.
I think you articulated yourself better in your original post. Fair enough names like [name]Vivienne[/name] don’t appeal to you(me neither). And some names are softer sounding granted, but even for a unisex name fan such as yourself, there are limits right?
Sure, I have limits. But my limits are different than other people’s and I respect that. If I found any appeal in [name]Ffion[/name], and wanted to use it on a boy, I would. If I wanted to use [name]Cohen[/name], which is often debated on here, I would find it no more offensive than naming a child [name]Christian[/name]. I just don’t necessarily think people should be called ignorant because they either didn’t look up the information on a name they used, or did and decided that liking the name meant more to them than the meaning. And I certainly don’t think that anyone who likes a unisex name should be grouped in the category of ‘oh, they wanted a boy’… that’s no more true than someone naming their son [name]Ffion[/name] and people saying they had been wishing for a welsh girl… but that’s just my opinion.
