Brainstorming Honor Names

Still not pregnant, still constantly daydreaming about more hypothetical future babies.

I’ve posted loads recently about loving the combo Etta Jane, but there are so many other gorgeous girls names to play with too. But after discovering that my maternal grandmother’s name was spelled Rhetta (I always thought it was spelled Rita , it was pronounced Ree-tuh), the name Etta feels so serendipitous that I really think we would use it if we ever have a daughter. Yes, Etta is pronounced differently than my grandmother Rhetta pronounced her name, but I think the ending spelling is enough to consider it a nod to her.

I am really stuck on the combo Etta Jane. However, I feel like if we do ever have a daughter I would feel guilty if I didn’t include a nod to my mother-in-law or my husband’s grandmother.

Our first son shares a first name with my paternal grandfather and shares a middle name with both my husband and father-in-law, who originally got their middle names as nods to my husband’s paternal grandmother (Patrick for Patricia). Basically, we have a child that has very obvious ties to my paternal side and my husband’s paternal side.
If we had a daughter named Etta, that would be a tie to my maternal side, leaving my husband’s maternal side as the only one without an honor name.

So a). Would two middle names be too bothersome? I was already considering double barreling Etta Jane, but I think it would be easier to have Jane as a middle name and still call her by Etta Jane if we want to. Would it be too much to add a second honor middle name?

And b). The main point of this novel- I would love to see what nameberry’s brainstorming would come up with for honor name options.
My MIL is named St€phani€ Ann€.
Her mother is named C@rolyn.

I’m not super fond of St€phani€ or C@rolyn as-is, and I’m not sure if Etta Jane Ann€ works. I kind of dig but kind of feel like a two or 3 syllable name would work better there.

What sort of honor names would work for St€phani€, C@rolyn, or Ann€?

Etta Jane Annette (Annette = “Grace”)

Etta Jane Annabelle (Would Annebelle be a ridiculous spelling?)

Etta Jane Anneliese

Etta Jane Annalee

Etta Jane Vivianne (too much of a yOuNiQuE spelling?)

Etta Jane Lilianna

Etta Jane Lilianne “Lily; pledged to God”

Etta Jane Annemarie (mine and MIL’s middles, but then that’s technically 3 middle names?)

Etta Jane Annabeth (I feel like the Anna-variants are too much of a stretch for Anne?)

Etta Jane Julianne (just meh about this name, love Juliette, though).

Etta Jane Rhianne (wouldn’t typically be my style, but my farms middle name is Ray, mom’s middle name is Renee, and it sort of feels like a mishmash of Ray+Renee+anne?)

Etta Jane Renee (my mom’s middle, but coincidentally also my husband’s aunt’s name so might seem odd and make also leave out MIL).

Etta Jane Rosalee (my paternal grandmother’s middle name was Lee, so variation to Rosalie to honor her, but still leaves out husband’s maternal side)

Anneliese would have been one of my suggestions! I like Annabelle, Vivianne, and Annemarie too. Would you consider Caroline or Carolina? I think Etta Caroline Jane “Etta Jane” is sweet! Etta Carolina Jane is also fun and beautiful. Etta Stefania Jane?

A few other ideas:

Etta Jane Anouk
Etta Stevie Jane
Etta Charlotte Jane
Etta Anina Jane
Etta Anya Jane
Etta Annelie Jane
Etta Ninon Jane/Etta Jane Ninon
Etta Nancy Jane

Some of these aren’t so obvious, but I did try to stick to variants of Ann€, Steph@nie, and Car0lyn! Good luck!

I actually really like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]. I knew a girl as a kid whose name was double barrel [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] and I always liked the combination.

I do like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]! I had it stuck in my head it needed to be “Etta [name_f]Jane[/name_f] ____”, but you’re right. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] could still be called [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

Thank you for sharing. It does keep it sweet and simple instead of over complicating.

I like first name [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] middle name [name_f]Carolyn[/name_f]

I really like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annette[/name_f] although [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is also lovely.

[name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] (garland, crown), [name_f]Carolyn[/name_f] (free man), or [name_f]Anne[/name_f] (grace) Ideas:

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Antonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Estefany[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Carly[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Carlina[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Carlotta[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] - means garland, crown
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] - means free man
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Francine[/name_f] - means free man
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Charlene[/name_f] - means free man

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought is that [name_f]Jane[/name_f] works as an honour for [name_f]Anne[/name_f] already, sharing 3 of the 4 letters – the meanings of grace and gracious are also related. But if it doesn’t feel that way to you and your husband then it’s missing the main (and possibly only important) criteria

I’m always in favour of More Name, but I’m in the UK where admin systems accommodate this really well. It seems worth considering to put what you want to into the name.

It seems that way, doesn’t it, but what I’ve found in a lot of wandering around reading names on gravestones is that there have been spelling variations used for hundreds of years. [name_f]Vivianne[/name_f] was used a lot in [name_f]France[/name_f] in the 1920’s to 1950’s according to the stats. I really like the visual effect of the extra N and E. I think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Rhianne[/name_f] is very elegant.

One more idea: [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Joanne[/name_f] as first and middle, but [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as her nickname.

I adore all the [name_f]Anne[/name_f] names but don’t think you need to feel guilty if you don’t include it!
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is darling as-is!

I also love 2 middle names and I think all of your options paired with shorter [name_f]Etta[/name_f] absolutely work.
However, I would personally avoid [name_f]Annalee[/name_f] [name_f]Annalise[/name_f] names.

You like [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], could that serve as a full name for [name_f]Etta[/name_f]? [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] would be sweet and it also ties in the Rh- from Rhetta and the [name_f]Ann[/name_f] for mil.

[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] (any spelling) is a personal top favorite for me so I vote for that one…Etta [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] would flow a bit better but both are lovely.
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lilyann[/name_f] would be very sweet too!

It never occurred to me that [name_f]Jane[/name_f] could honor [name_f]Anne[/name_f]! Also hadn’t even thought of [name_f]Joanne[/name_f] and using that with nn [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is an interesting idea! A lot to think about, thank you.

[name_f]Francine[/name_f] is one my favorite middle names, just seems to go with some much. So I do love [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Francine[/name_f] and had considered it but didn’t know it shared a meaning with an honor name!

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annette[/name_f] is one of my favorite of the obvious [name_f]Anne[/name_f] options, I think.

I don’t think so - just check how many characters you’re allowed on the birth certificate where you are

I’m liking:

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] (Annebelle isn’t ridiculous, but I don’t think it’s necessary for the honour unless you like it)

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Vivianne[/name_f] (not too much - I’ve seen it used plenty)

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Lillianne[/name_f] (pretty)

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f] (it depends how you feel but [name_f]Anna[/name_f]- for [name_f]Anne[/name_f] makes total sense to me)

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Rhianne[/name_f] (feels meaningful)

Some more options

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Carianne

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Lysanne (Ly from Car0lyn, S from St3phan!e + Anne)

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Lyanne / [name_f]Lianne[/name_f]

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Roselyn[/name_f]

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Caralie[/name_f] / [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Leilani[/name_f] (similar meaning to S, similar ending to S, and A)

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_m]Cass[/name_m] / [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Cassianne (C. A. S from the initals)

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (variant of Car0l!ne)

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Charlee[/name_f] (from Car0l!ne + Lee)

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Stella[/name_f] (from beginning of Ste.ph@nie)

[name_m]Just[/name_m] jumping on to mention my fav [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] variant: [name_m]Etienne[/name_m] which is then feminised to Etienna and Etiennette… both easily shortened to Etta… so you could have the full name Etienna [name_f]Jane[/name_f] who always goes by [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and get your honour name too!

Never would have guessed there was a connection between those names. Very interesting, thanks!

[name_f]Effie[/name_f] is precious and never thought of it being a nod to [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f]!

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] would be my choice - [name_f]Frances[/name_f] meaning “free man” like Carloyn, and having the ‘Anne’ sound in [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Frances[/name_f] but totally overlooked those connections to the honor names. Thanks!
